eBay DevCon 2010

What did we get out of the eBay Developer Conference 2010 (aside from a cool eco-friendly ChicoBag, over $500 in eBay gift cards, a hot new Netbook and a wry Garfield Chia Pet?

- We got to hear eBay’s official word on how they’re doing:  growing the Top Rated Seller percentage to over 1/3 of total eBay GMV, playing gracious host platform to over 40 Open eBay apps, and constantly working to make the “world’s largest marketplace” ever more customer-focused and technology-driven, to meet the needs of buyers, sellers AND developers.

- We got to enjoy the atmosphere and service of San Jose’s ritziest hotel without having to be attired in formalwear.

- We got to learn about how various industry consultant and exec types are seeing the future of eCommerce: increasingly on mobile devices, more and more personally relevant yet socially connected, and all transacted with our wallets and identities in the cloud.

- We got Gordon Biersch all to ourselves for a few hours and even got a lucky draw for one of the coveted raffle prizes.

- We got to share war stories with and glean wisdom from our fellow combatants in the software trenches: reminding us of API and coding best practices, commiserating over the price-sensitivity of the Open eBay Apps audience, and demonstrating live examples of integration in action.

- We got to admire the extensive antique doorknob and lock, key, sword, knife, rifle, handgun, model car and racing memorabilia collections of some of Silicon Valley’s most accomplished collectors at the VIP Developer event.

- We got to juice our idea box with presentations and demos of new API’s, clouds and platforms being offered by not only eBay and PayPal, but others in the development and ecommerce ecosystem, like Salesforce.com, Intuit, Microsoft, and Intel.

We could’ve done with fewer stereotypical developer jokes (yeah, yeah….developers are night owls, crack up at references to Einstein’s mass-energy equivalence formula on Powerpoint slides, and devour takeout pizza…), but other than that minor gripe, we thank eBay for recognizing us with our third Star Developer Award this year and hosting a great event!

See you in 2011!
