eBay Giving Works and You. Selling for a Good Cause

EBay began their Giving Works program in 2003. EBay came up with an idea that would allow sellers to list items on their personal or business accounts and if they wished, they could choose from one of many charities registered with the program, such as Goodwill industries, national federation of the blind, dress for success and the blind center of Nevada. After selecting from these or one of many other charities, they could then choose to donate between 10% – 100% of the item’s final sales price to the charity. So now, with only a few clicks of a mouse, sellers can donate to their favorite charity, and as a gift to the seller, eBay gives a portion of the sellers fees back to the seller after the item sells. Talk about a win-win for everyone involved!

Here’s even more good news for you: EBay statistics for the program have shown that if you list an item through the Giving Works program, the item stands a much higher chance of being sold. The reason behind this is obvious…people enjoy the feeling they get from knowing that when they buy something they are also giving back. EBay makes it easy for buyers to pick out the charity auctions by highlighting them with a blue and gold Ribbon. At the top of the auction listings, they put information about the chosen charity and tell the buyer how much of what they’re paying will be donated. They also spotlight the auctions that take part in the program on their giving works program page, so there’s a chance the buyer can be led directly to your eBay store simply based on the fact that you are a part of this program. Buyers can also donate directly to the charities through this page.

Since the eBay Giving Works program began, they have raised well over $269,178,000 and if you have a chance to visit their page, you will see that this amount is going up every second of every day. This is fantastic news for the charities but also for us as eBay sellers. What could be better than selling your items faster, at a higher price AND being able to give back to someone in need? I personally can’t think of anything they could have done to improve this program. As someone who has worked with eBay for a long time, and someone who donates 10% of all my store’s profits to a charity that I stand behind, (Mi Esperanza…check it out when you can!) I strongly advocate this program. There’s no better feeling in the world than knowing you’re making a difference, except maybe the feeling of knowing you’re making a difference and selling tons of items! So, the next time you list an item on the site, why not give the eBay Giving Works program a try? With such a win-win opportunity, it’s impossible to lose.
