Tips ‘N Tricks for Managing Your Social Media Marketing

One of the biggest complaints I hear when I’m talking to eBay sellers is that they often feel like they are spending so much time working on their social media marketing, they don’t have time to do anything else. Although social media can be overwhelming, it is here to stay and is what I believe you might call a necessary evil. If you know you need to be doing some social media marketing, but don’t know where to begin — here are some tips and tricks that can make managing your social media marketing simpler.

Decide who you are and what your business is all about. Do you sell new items or antiques? Are you all about clothing, books, or electronics? Your bio or profile needs to reflect who you are and what your eBay business is all about. The trick is to summarize your business with just a few short sentences. If you can’t explain who you are, what you sell, or what your business is all about without having to offer a long explanation, you are going to lose the interest of your potential buyers.

Choose one social media site and set it up completely. A lot of people sign up for all the different social media accounts out there on the Internet and then never fully get any of them off the ground. Pick one social media site for this week, such as Facebook, Google+ or Twitter and make plans to work on it everyday for an entire week. Check your current bio and contact information. Is it current? Do you need to add your company logo or update your profile picture? Once you have taken the steps to update the appearance of your page, plan to make at least one comment on your page each day for the entire week.

Use the 80/20 percent rule. The Social Media Examiner suggests that businesses new to social media use 80-percent curated content and 20-percent original content. This doesn’t mean copying comments from Twitter and using them as your own, but rather “ReTweeting” content (giving credit to the person that originally said it). Choose content that is relevant to your business or that which points potential customers to different sites with information about the products that you sell. The 20-percent original content that is left should then be a mixture of promoting your business, your products, and yourself.

Avoid overloading your followers with updates. A study conducted by SocialVibe found that one-third of US Internet users ended a social connection with a brand because the company posted too many updates. The rule of thumb is Communicate and Educate. Don’t Inundate.


Take some time to research the keywords for your eBay business. You have probably heard me mention before how important it is to use the correct keywords when you are listing your items, but a lot of people don’t think about using them for their social media marketing campaigns. Plus, when you are using keywords on Twitter, you can use the ô#ö symbol to make the keyword show up and rank higher in the searches.

Finally, if you are still unsure about how the different sites works — just sign up for them and then watch how the other people do it. Friend some of the people who sell in the same niche as you do and simply follow their lead. You’ll be tweeting, posting and Pinning with the best of them in no time!
