Social Media: Are You Getting the Most Out of It?

If you’re like most sellers, you probably spend a lot of time Tweeting on Twitter, posting on Facebook, and linking (or rather networking) on LinkedIn, but have you ever wondered if your getting the most you can out of spending all that time posting and commenting on these social media websites?

As you probably already know, the main reason you should use social media is to help drive traffic to your store or website, but in reality it offers so much more than that. You can also use it build up your brand name, engage with your customers, and even build relationships.

The problem is that a lot of people are doing the social media “thing,” but many people don’t realize that it is a long term commitment and when they don’t see fast results quickly they give up. While I can only tell you to “stay the course” and give it time, there are some things you can do to help ensure that you are getting the most out of these social media websites.


First, you have to provide quality and relevant content on a consistent basis. A lot of people set up their account, make a few posts and then kind of forget about things for a while. This not only doesn’t make the Google Spyders happy, but people that “Friend” or “Follow” you won’t hang around if there is nothing for them to see. Choose how often you are going to update your content and then stick to it!

Next, remember that it takes time to build up a targeted audience. Sure, you can get a ton of followers on Twitter, but if you check the analytics for your account you may find that a lot of the people that follow you are really running a numbers game and aren’t actually interested in what you have to say or what you are selling. Look for people that are genuinely interested in you and your business and make a point to target them specifically.

Do you use “calls to action” in your posts? People actually like having someone tell them what to do. They will follow your links and respond to you if you give them something to do. Also, if you have a website or blog, check to make sure that people can easily share your posts with others. Place your social sharing buttons where people can see them and (this next one really bugs me!) create a way for people to easily join your site or receive your posts by email.

Finally, while you adding your buttons to your website or blog, put the information about them on your Facebook and Twitter page. Everything you have on the Internet that has to do with your business should actually connect to everything else in one big circle. This gives people multiple ways to find your store or website and allows them to find their way back to you.
