7 Tips to Make Your Business Blog Successful

I recently wrote about how important it is to have a blog for your business. Today, I would like to give you some ideas on how to make your blog successful. After all, if you are going to go to all the trouble of creating a blog, you do want your buyers to read it.

Here are 7 pointers if you want to start blogging for business:

1. It takes at least 50 blog posts before Google will add you to their index, so be consistent with your blogging. You don’t have to write something every day, but you should have a consistent schedule of when you post whether it is once a week or once a month.  If you start blogging, but don’t continue once you start, you are really just wasting your time.

2. Write about other people — even your competition. It might seem counterproductive to write about your competition, but when you write about a business or person, your blog will get pulled up in internet search results for that person or company! You can sometimes even get attention for your blog by writing about a celebrity. As an example, if you sell vintage clothes and Angelina Jolie wears a vintage dress to the Oscars, you can write about her vintage item and draw attention to the ones that you sell.

3. Write once — read twice. Although you can delete a blog post, it never really goes away. This is especially true if someone picks up your blog and posts it on their website. It is always a good idea to write your post and then walk away from it for a while. When you return to it, you will probably see all sorts of things that you missed. You might even find it helpful when you are first getting started to have someone read over the post for you before you hit that “Submit” button.

4. Pay attention to your blog’s traffic. Blogs usually have analytics that show which post was read the most and where your traffic came from. You may find you have a group you can market to if, for instance, a lot of people from another country frequently read your posts and you don’t sell your products there.

5. Allow your readers to comment. Some people don’t allow comments because they are afraid of either getting spam as comments or they are afraid they will get ugly comments about their blog — however, if you don’t allow comments you are taking away the your chance to get feedback on blog topics and ultimately, items you’re selling. When possible, you should also make a point of responding to the comments your readers make. This gives readers the feeling that you are approachable and often gets a real dialogue going.

6. Give your readers plenty of chances to subscribe to your blog. There is nothing that drives me crazier than when I am reading a blog and I want to follow it, but I can’t figure out where to subscribe. If possible, I suggest you give your blog readers a chance to get your posts through their email and then either “Follow” you or give them a chance to pick up your blog through an RSS feed.

7. Let your readers get to know you. One of the biggest mistakes I have seen some bloggers make is that they do nothing but try to sell you something every time they write a blog post. While you don’t have to tell readers all about your personal life, giving them your thoughts on products you have tried or some tips and tricks about your ecommerce business will usually make readers appreciate what you are doing and once they feel they know you — they will often start buying from you, making it a win-win situation for you both.
