Got a Dongle? Sell it on eBay!

It seems that people have been laughing over the word “dongle” ever since it emerged in the world of tech-talk. Lately, it’s mainly eBay sellers who are doing the laughing over dongles (specifically Chromecast dongles) — and they are laughing all the way to the bank.

I have to confess that I am not one of those tech-savvy sorts, so I had to do a little research to discover exactly what a dongle is. A quick review on Wikipedia and I now know that dongles basically are devices that provide content protection when attached to a computer or other piece of electronic equipment.

In the case of the Chromecast dongle (which normally retails for about $35), it’s considered a bridge device from your phone or tablet to your television. Although it’s really not all that different than other devices of a similar nature, the reason this one has had eBay sellers scrambling is because subscribers can use the device to stream Netflix shows from their smartphones.

Add to that the fact that Netflix was offering a three-month free subscription for those that bought a Chromecast dongle, and the device instantly sold out at both Best Buy and Amazon as soon as it hit the proverbial and virtual online shelf.

While the device is available on Google Play for $35, there is currently a 2-3 week backorder. Sadly, Netflix suspended their subscription deal, so that ship has sailed.

All hope is not lost for those who feel a Chromecast dongle is a “must-have” right now, because there are still a few Chromecast listings on eBay (around 9 as of today, vs. 130 last week). The eBay BIN price is currently running around $65 – $100.

Where I’m going with all of this is to show that once again there are items out there that can bring a lot of profit for eBay sellers that are keeping up with trends. Most of the items, however, probably won’t have such a funny sounding name! ;-)
