Ok, I did this to myself, but I can't figure out how to undo it. I accidentally clicked a button that said to make Netscape 4.7 my default browser (that happened when I was working on the website and wanted to "preview in browser". Now I can't undo it. When I'm in IE 6.0 a link will keep me in Explorer, but if there's a link in Outlook Express and I click on it, it will end up opening Netscape 4.7 to view the link. So, I decided to just delete Netscape from my computer. Well, now no links in my emails will work (except an email link). How do I change it back? I've searched and searched - can't find it.

At the top of your screen where it says Tools you click on that and then where it says Reset Web Settings it will ask if you wish to set them to the original Internet Explorer default ones. Hope that works!

who is your ISP? Call them and ask what to do, they should be able to help you.

Kiara has it right except it maybe hidden under the "programs" tab when you click on Internet Options

This should work.

Start IE 6.0
Left click on Tools
Left click on Internet Options
Left click on the Tab at the top that says programs
About 3/4's of the way down the page it should say "Internet Explorer should check to see weather it is the default browser" Put a check in that box. If not let me know and I will find another way.

Thanks for all the help. I do have the box checked that says "Internet explorer should check to make sure it's the default browser" and I did try to reboot. When I clicked on Internet explorer it opened like normal. It's only when I use the links in email that Netscape will come up. I don't want to reset the web settings, because I do patient charting at home and it was a big hassle to set up to get connected to work, and if I reset everything I'll have to go through that again. Funny thing is too when I go back into front page now it won't let me do the "browser preview" through Netscape. (I ended up restoring it out of the recycle bin because I figured that was better than not being able to click on anything in my inbox)

Never mind on the Front Page thing - I just launched that and my Netscape options are back in there too.

I would print this for reference during this operation. This should work for you. Just a warning changing files can be a bugger sometimes and not nice things can happen. If you don't feel comfortable with changing this file then take it to a QUALIFIED service person.

If Communicator is running, exit the program by selecting File, Exit from the menu bar.

Using Windows Explorer, open the Netscape folder on your hard drive. The default location is C:\Program Files\Netscape Communicator. This location may differ if you chose a different location when installing Communicator.

Inside the Netscape folder, open the Users folder.

Inside the Users folder, open the folder with the same name as your personal Communicator profile.

Back up the file called prefs.js somewhere on your hard drive. Note: This file may simply be labeled prefs. In Windows Explorer, you can do this by selecting the file, selecting File, Copy from Explorer's menu bar, and pasting the file somewhere else.

Open this file in a text editor. By default, the pref.js file is associated with Netscape Communicator or Navigator. In order to open this file with a text editor, right-click on it and, from the pop-up menu that appears, choose Open With.

In the dialog box that appears, select Notepad or Notepad.exe from the list. Make sure that the "Always use this program to open this type of file" checkbox at the bottom of the window is unchecked.

Click OK to close this window and open the pref.js file in Notepad.

In this file, you will see a line (you may have to scroll down a bit) that reads:
user_pref("browser.wfe.ignore_def_check", true);

Leaving the line otherwise untouched, change the word true to the word false. If you do not see the above line in your prefs file, Communicator may already be configured as your default browser. You can add this line into this file and the next time it should check to see if it is the default browser. Make sure you select the right response. And NEVER NEVER check the box that says "NEVER SHOW THIS AGAIN"

Save the file (choose Save from the File menu) and close the window.

The next time you launch Communicator, you will be presented with a dialog box asking if you would like Netscape to be set as your default browser.

Let me know if this helps.

I know this thread is really old, but I'm cleaning off my computer desk today and ran across the instructions I printed out from hdm228.

The line you wanted me to change is different. It says
user_pref("browser.wfe.show_value", 3)

Can you still help? Also now I'm suddenly having Outlook as my default email editor - I don't know how I did that.....I use Outlook Express, but now I can't click on someone's email address - I have to copy and paste into Outlook Express. If I click on it Outlook will open and ask for my password (I tried all my usual passwords and it doesn't like any of them)

Never mind - fixed it....let the thread die for good now
I was playing with the internet settings and there was a line that said something about letting Internet Explorer reset the default web settings so I prayed and clicked yes - figured I didn't have too much to lose. It worked. I'm sure it messed something else up, but I haven't found it yet.....
