Yes, I guess the nuts or almost nuts are out. I received two copies of this email this morning. Scary. I hope no one believes it. Had to share it:

Does your computer seem to be running slower than usual? Well, if you've downloaded any music, movie clips, or games in the past 2 months, then your computer may be infected with "AdWare" and "SpyWare"!

Advertisers use downloadable music as a vehicle to "legally" add "SpyWare" and "AdWare" to consumer PCs. If you're suspicious that Internet Advertisers have added "AdWare" or "SpyWare" to your computer,
then here's your chance to scan your computer at no charge.

Scan here. It wont cost you a cent:

"AdWare" and "SpyWare" infections can cause your computer to freeze up, or even crash your hard drive. Your computer was very expensive, so scan your system today. It wont cost you a dime:

Paloma,
More than likely they are trying to sell you software. Almost everything has spy cookies attached to it now-a-days. Just keep cleaning them out...

I woke up to a nifty little Bugbear this morning.

Looking at the headers, looks like a hacked account (hrblock) being used, but boy was the title ever benign. From American Girl, "New talent show costumes and accessories". Gah. Virus software caught it.

Ebay selling seems to give you more reason to have good virus software, if only by the volume of new contacts. If you don't have virus software yet, forward fishy emails to a yahoo mail account, theirs works great.

Just get a Mac - Even if you get a virus it won't work.

Neonmania,

I agree! I've been working in the field of computers (everything from repair to sales to training) for the past 10 years. I've worked extensively on and with Mac's.... and have ever only run accross ONE virus on a Macintosh machine. Plus... they just work better and more reliably! Not to mention... if you actually compare prices and match component to component... you'll find that the Mac's typically a better deal cost-wise! (they just don't have the cheap, bargain-basement, get-what-you-pay-for lines that other manufactures have!) Glad to run into another Mac fan... someday the others will join us!

e - I've been on Mac since the old IIE's. I think most people don't even realize that windows is an attempt to copy the Macs operating system. They also do not understand the ease of adding new periphrials. EVERYTHING is compatible with EVERYTHING else. The only conflict I have ever encountered is when have more than two Iomega products plugged in at once (that is a no-no and they tell you that on the doc if you bother to read them - besides - nobody uses Jaz disks anymore). My old office PC was hell! New hard drive was incompatible, new cd drive - incompatible. Tape drive for back -ups.... we won't get into that 2 week journey into hell.

There is a 10 year old accounting program that I love and adore and if I can ever find it again will purchase a PC to run but that is the only way I will ever agree to deal with a PC again. I occasionally get file attachments sent that I can't open but luckily I have a computer semi-literate PC mother - I send it to her and she prints and faxes.

Oh yeah - I have NEVER had a virus on a Mac (bought Virus Scan after I plugged three Iomeda products in at once and before I found out that's a no-no ..... figured the resulting extreme key response delay but be virus related)

neon,

Got you beat! I actually started on the IIc! The IIe's were great too! I had one of those (and a Laser clone too).

If you do find that accounting program... don't bother getting a PC... buy a copy of Virtual PC instead! That will let you run just about all DOS and Windows software on the Mac you have grown to love! (I think it's great that I can use one computer to do all my macintosh, windows, and UNIX work!... try that on a PC!) Anyhow.... we're probably getting off track here... so...

VIRUS's BAD... APPLE's GOOD!!!

A note on spybots. I run Spybot Search in background and find that this site (VD) tries to down load mediaplex. Ebay has a couple they try and download while you are browsing. If you don't run a sypbot search you might not know what is on your computer and if it has changed your registry. The one I use is freeware: Spybot Search & Destroy.

Would this run on the same principle as Ad Aware?

I also use Spybot S & D as well as Ad Aware. Both have been great at finding things. Yes, Mediaplex keeps trying to download itself as I surf vendio. Very annoying

Vendio's Tribal Fusion is tracking software, too. I noticed it is linked to double-click.net and that is known spy-ware. ebay always uses that farm alt.mediaplex thing.
They be a farming for your info.
(Farming, Harvesting...sounds almost Nazi'ish, doesnt it?)
