I have a trumpet but I don't know anything about it. Ok, don't laugh, but I'm blowing until I'm blue in the face and I can't make any sound come out of it! I'm going to list it if I can figure out if it works or not....
Thanks
Laura Beth

All I know is that it takes A LOT of breath to blow the darn things. I cannot do it myself. I think the trick is how you purse your lips. Pucker up and blow?

You can't just blow, you won't make a sound that way. Like Cheryl said, you need to pucker up. Hold your lips tight together, kind of like a kiss, and blow hard with your lips together... It's a difficult position to get the hang of, but once you do you will be able to do it over and over.

First, do you have the mouth piece? Normally, trumpets are brassy/gold color but there should be a silver mouthpiece for the small end. Everyone is right, there is a trick to the pucker to make it sound. What you should be concerned about is the condition of the keys. They must come back up easily when pressed down.

The middle one sticks every now and then?

Is that a huge problem? Or is it because it's been sitting up for a while?

It's a Yamaha and it's not in great condition, but it sure would beat renting one...I can remember those days with my own daughter.

My son just had to have a Sax. Thankfully, I talked him into the Clarinet. A Sax is very expensive. He lasted about 6 months with the instrument. As it was I wasn't happy about his quitting. I would have been even angrier had I spent the money on a Sax. I think used intruments are the way to go with children.

Probably isn't a big problem (middle key sticking). I seem to recall that they unscrew...but this is going back a while and it was a friend's trumpet. I played clarinet. We had a whole other set of problems!

I played the coronet and baritone. I think all your middle valve needs is valve oil and it should be fine. All 3 should be oiled periodically. There are also pads. The part that goes into the valve have pad, usually green, underneath so they won't be metal to metal when you depress them.
It takes a lot of hard work and the right pucker up to get a sound but once mastered it is very easy. I am sure if you put it on you should get bids because as you said renting instruments is expensive. Foreign made ones don't bring as much money as ones made by LeBlanc. Good Luck

My son plays the trumpet. He was the only trumpet player that couldn't make a sound the 1st time he tried. He's now in his 7th year and is quite good if I say so myself. He is a Junior in High School and still enjoys playing. Football games start Friday, and I love to watch them perform on the field (all 188 of them) big for our area.

He is always oiling and cleaning to keep it in great playing condition.

I played the trumpet all through Jr High, High School and college (marching and concert bands). You don't blow on the mouthpiece, per se, but you "buzz" with your lips. It's hard to describe without actually demonstrating it. Besides making sure the valves are oiled you need to make sure and clean the inside. You can get a "snake" that is used for cleaning. Just imagine what it looks like on the inside, all that food and "gunk" that comes from your mouth. Empty the spit valve regulary too. All that is the "yucky" part of playing a brass instrument.

gee, you mean that bubble gum wasn't supposed to be in there?

seriously folks...thanks for all your help. I DID manage to get a sound out of it, everything else, the buyer will have to figure out, I'll just list it with everything I know about it. Only paid $1.00 for it so I can't lose much on it.

NOW if I can just get comcast online to properly set up my new wireless laptop I'll be ok. the mail keeps getting stuck in the outbox of my desktop and that has never happened until the laptop.

Which by the way, CompUSA had a terrific deal on a Toshiba this past weekend! I am now WIRELESS YAY!! For $699.00 plus $350. "freebies" after rebates!

I'm doing the happy dance since I've waited for this laptop for two years!

Hey glassgrl

I got me the same laptop!! My old one is 5 years old (2 gig hard drive and 24 megs of RAM....) and I was going crazy because it was sooooooo slllloooooowwwwww. When my brother heard about the fab deal I was going to get, he asked me to pick up one for him as well! I'm going to use it as a replacement for both my laptop and desktop. I'm tired of transferring info from one to the other when I go out of town. I did have to buy a PS/2 to USB adapter cord (on eBay, natch!) since I want to set it up at home with a monitor, keyboard and mouse and just unplug it when I travel.

BTW I got the CUTEST little mini mouse for traveling since I don't like to use touchpads. It's only about 3 inches by 1 inch, and it had a retractable cord. Just one of those gadget things that I looked at and just HAD to have!!

I bet you didn't know that a trumpet is very good for telling time. Just give it the biggest blast you can and wait for someone to shout, "Cut it out! It's 3 oclock in the morning!"

lurkyloo, I fell for the rechargeble cordless mini laptop mouse but it is great, no cords!! Now I need a usb hub to hook all my usb connections to!

Isn't this THE BEST laptop??!!

My husband actually brought me home a Compaq for my birthday two years ago and I made him take it back and get his money back - I hated it! I couldn't see paying $1000.00 for a laptop and everytime I went to Dell to configure one it came out to the same $$ for what this one had on it. But the day before we left to go to Birmingham my monitor died on my desktop, and since we're going to buy a fifth wheel and travel for the next year or two it was high time for the laptop.

Now I'm just trying to figure out how to stuff my desktop into the guest bedroom and use my laptop in the living room on the roll top desk.

Yes, this is the BEST laptop! Early last week, I went into CompUSA because they had a $1,049 Toshiba with the $350 in goodies. The salesman advised me that their Midnight Madness sale would be in a couple of days and I shouldn't open this one just in case I saw something I liked better at the Madness sale. I had purchased the additional insurance for the first one (to safeguard me when I travel, bumping the cost to around $1,400), but at $699 I decided to dispense with the insurance and take my chances. This is almost a throwaway price! I know that the day after Thanksgiving is a hot one for deals like this, but now I know that the Midnight Madness sales are an alternative. I think we both deserve a pat on the back for being such thrifty and alert consumers!
