I had a bidder (feedback 10+ no -) buy a $90+ item. I emailed them. After 3 days, they had not replied so I sent a reminder. The reminder bounced back due to invalid email address. I sent their email address to Ebay as invalid and negged the newbie. Now 3 days later, the bidder contacts me and said he sent me a response and he had a virus and had to change email addresses. I never received a response from him and doubt if he sent one (I don't even use a spam filter and I got plenty of email in between). Now he says he mailed the payment and wants his money back. What would you do?

You said that you turn in his invalid email to ebay? Did they NARU him? Three days was a tad hasty to leave a negative perhaps. If his check ever arrives mail it back to him.

I agree with Ace. Think you acted too quickly with the neg. I also just had an EOA with an invalid email, but the buyer hadn't bought since 1999 or something. Emailed ebay, next day he had a good changed email/ebay address. Probably just changed it and not on ebay. There are occasional buyers - not every one is an ebay fanatic.

Yeesh..3 days? I have emails bounce all the time because of spam filters and what-not. Why didn't you try to contact him through ebay? Or at least give enough time for a snail mail payment to arrive? If I were that buyer, I'd be pretty chapped.

do you always do business that fast? Give the buyer a little leeway. If you buyer does the right thing he will give you a negative back and it is surly deserved.

NEVER neg a bidder for invalid contact.
Sometimes they can "fix" the problem once you have reported it to Ebay.
If it's invalid that bidder will be unregistered within a few days.
That bidder may fix whatever the problem is and neg you right back!

Stormy, I hope you get a big fat NEG back. You acted like a big time jerk that give good sellers a bad name. Like I always say it takes more than Ebay to be a seller. I hope this new ebay customer doesn't quit Ebay now because of a jerk like you.

This is not a problem bidder - this is an immature seller problem that has read too many posts telling sellers to turn in bidders when emails get returned.

Return your bidders payment and make an apologizing note on their feedback. You jumped the gun.

When I get a bidder with an invalid e-mail address, I wait for 3 days just to see if the contact me. 85% of the time they do because they know it is invalid and can't figure out how to change it. The name of the game is to make money and if you keep your customers happy with a little patience, you will make more money.

After three days, I do try again. If it still comes back, then I do turn it in to ebay, but I don't neg at that time. Then I let the normal time frames take effect as if it were a deadbeat bidder. I file NPB after 14 days, and FVF at 24 days. Then I neg, never before. You likely cost yourself a sale and for sure a repeat customer.

The neg your going to get back is going to hurt you a lot more as a seller than yours will hurt your buyer.
You sound like the newbie & your buyer is right in demanding his money back.

I agree with bigpeepa 100%

I have had 3 like this lately. I wait for a few days then try again. then, if that bounces, i send the reminder through ebay. bounces again, email ebay.

2 out of 3 emailed me with their new email address...the third is now NARU...

but you move way too fast..

advice? you have already received the best.
