Helping out a friend that found an album of old stamp 40's & 50's) from around the world. Can anyone reccomend a site where we can try to identify some of these and research their value?

You aren't going to find much online - The best way to go is to a local public library and see if they have a Scott catalog. If you know what kind of album you have, you already will have a good indication of what it is worth. Certain albums are designed for beginning collectors - If it is a relatively small album with a lot of countries, you most likely have very little value there.

A lot of times you could buy those stamps through magazines for pennies. I have a lot of them and they aren't worth anything. 1940s and 1950s really aren't all that old. I could be wrong on yours, though. I have some very old ones from the turn of the century and those are even iffy due to condition. US ones sell better than world ones. I had sets of Cinderella from odd places around the world and they were practically worthless. I'd do as other suggested. Find someone in your area that sells stamps and ask.

If I go to the auction today I will ask the stamp dealer that also goes. I know he is going to be there because he is selling off his merchandise for his antique booths and just sticking to selling stamps.

I talked with the stamp expert and he said stamps from the 50 - 60 are not worth anything. Not even the commerative ones. He said no US stamp is worth much. But I still would try and list them as you never know some young person starting to stamp collect just might need them. Sorry, I wish the news was better.

libra is right, your stamps are not worth anything. Only hope is to count them, tell how many are unused, and list as a big lot. Sorry.

EbayVet - Thank you for the referral - I have found a couple of the stamps going for 20-30 so hopefully the book will help me to identify the names of some of these stamps rather than blindly trying to match images. Thank you also for being the only person that actually gave an answer that dealt with the question at hand.

fenix: You have to be careful, though, that the stamps you have are the stamps that are identified as having those values.

Stamps have minute (truly very tiny) distinguishing features that can make all the difference between worthless or not.

Condition is all-important, also.

Thanks Fenix, and Iareateacher is absolutely right - Something like a perf difference (which is indistinguisable from just looking at the stamp) can make a $50 stamp into a 20 cent stamp. Also, be aware that catalog value, and real world value are two different things. I've regularly sold stamps at 15-20% Scott value on ebay - If I am selling for that amount, dealers must pay even less. As a lifelong stamp collector, member of the American Philatelic Society and my local clubs here, my advice is to collect because you enjoy collecting. Unfortnately (and I am not talking to the situation here) people think they will buy stamps, put them away, and cash out later. They are often shocked to find their cashout value is not what their cash in amount was.
