I was mousing around eBay, checking out the competition.

Take a look at this auction for a pendant: 8900455664. (Sorry, link would be too long.) Page down to about the middle of the page, where there are four types of chains offered that you can do a BIN now.

Pretty kool idea, I thought. Until I tried to click on one. They're all dead or pointing to earring auctions. I looked at other pendant auctions; same thing.

For Pete's sake, why go to all the trouble to set up your auctions so that you can upsell your customer by adding a chain to her pendant order if you aren't going to take a few moments to make sure the bloody links work?

These people had 4,383 auctions up while I was looking. That's auctions, not store items. I don't even want to think about what they're throwing away on eBay fees.

fluff - I went to the auction and checked and the link to the chains being offered and was directed to the BIN chains for $7.99. So it would appear there was a glitch in the system or they have corrected the problem.

You clicked on the pictures, I'll bet. I was clicking on the caption below the pictures.

I clicked on the description too, it take you to gold earings. I really don't care for all that tons of bull you have to read though and look at. This would not be a good format for buyers in Kentucky. It would do nothing but confuse them and they wouldn't buy anything.

You're right fluff, as usual ! Clicking on the pictures does work, the caption links do not.

I would also agree with MAH645 - too many policies, links, etc. on their pages.

Well, dispite the mistakes in the links and the overly wordy terms - I like it. May have a toborrow an idea or two.

Yeah, I've tried to read through one of their pages several times but I get tired and give up.

There's no law that says you have to put every single policy on your auction pages.

I've been reading their feedback -- 6,000 positives in the last 30 days, yikes! -- and they seem to have some confused buyers. One person thought she was getting yellow gold earrings and left a positive even though the item arrived in 'white gold'...however, it says 925 sterling silver right there in the auction.

These guys have "only" about 12,000 unique feeback but have gotten 6,000 in the last 30 days...must be a major sales push. Or something.

I bot a 14k gold chain once on Ebay. The seller seems to be a direct importer/wholesaler,and one morning I woke up and the damn chain broke!
I exchanged it for a different chain from the same seller and it broke again?
I have never known any gold chain which breaks??

Buy a chain that is not paper thin or that is well made or... remove your cheap thin poorly made chain before going to bed.

I agree that the listing is kind of "busy" but there are some good ideas like the navigation bar on the left. They may be be in violation of ebay keyword spamming regs though.

I wonder what happens when you checkout on their website - do they upsell at checkout? It was hard to find a link to the website on the "me" page (It was in the banner ad). Busy folks!

Neglus - I thought keyword spamming to BUT - those are graphic link buttons on that left side bar.

I just wanted to say I love these types of threads, it really helps me to see what other sellers think about different selling formats. Thanks Fluffy for your post lately.

If you click of any of them now, a message opens that says they had a big fire in their warehouse today and they apologize for having to close all their auctions on such short notice.

Well, that's one way to cut down on the competition, I guess, eh Fluffy?

It wasn't easy to do on such short notice. Do you know how hard it is to get from New York and back in 6 hours?

In all seriousness, the timing of this "fire" is pretty darned interesting.

Here's another competitor with feature-filled pages. (Though I think the centered lines are a very bad idea.)

The centering is bad & the tables are ugly and look amatuerish. Nowhere near as sharp and clean as the fire sale auctions

The "me" page with link to the website for the sellers with the fire is down as well. That will be one Mell of a Hess to clean up!

The newest auction I could find was listed friday. The one you bookmarked is a 7 day auction that ends today.
