I just came back from the post office,my customer returned some merchandise and insured them for 400 dollars.
The outside box was crushed and inside content partially damaged.
I showed them to the postal clerk and the claim was denied-
reasons-
(1) He reused the box I sent him.
(2) He should have padded the inside.
WOW,dont we all know better not to reuse the box and pad the inside??
This makes me more convinced to use U-PIC or DSI where we are judged on our own claims experience rather than that of the general public.
It has become obvious since Ebay that USPS is doing a good job denying insurance claims,so for those sellers who have sterling record,go with a private insurer and be judged on his/her own merits.
Not to mention it is cheaper too!!

The use of other insurers might require that the seller provide the return mailing label and insure the package. Which might not be a bad idea in some circumstances.
Assuming the claim was a "not as described" the seller might want to make sure the item was insured to protect the value. The cost of insurance would certainly save a lot of haggling if the item were damaged during return.

What I meant to say in this thread is that USPS or it could be UPS or Fed exp,our insurer,is getting good at denying claims.
Just because a package is insured does not mean $$ will be paid when damaged in transit.
Reasons given by USPS-
-failure to pack according to USPS guidelines
-Well packed according to guidelines,so it cant be damaged in transit.
-outside box is not damaged.
what else??
Most consumers are not aware of USPS guidelines on packing, nor do they have an account with U-PIC or DSI.

Which might be a good reason for the seller to pay for return insurance, if the seller was afraid of damage and did not want to get into a PayPal reversal.

I live in Australia. at times i buy from the u.s.a.and other countries. i also use DSI. insurance when i send parcels to america. I spoke to DSI and asked them if i could insure parcels coming to me. they said yes i can. but of course you have to let them know the details of the parcel. value and such like. I have been doing this for several years. I can do this from most countries. except the banned ones. but i never tell my supplier that i am putting insurance on it. works well.

If you are buying from wholesalers/manufacturer and content is damaged, they will replace them at no charge to you, most do a good job packing and shipping.
But if you are buying from Ebay sellers who work at home, then it is a good idea to take out insurance.
