I was in Vegas in April, stayed at the Flamingo Hotel(3 stars, but central location),food is expensive everywhere, from coffee to sandwich to buffet to cabride.
A nice sandwich at Flamingo is 7 dollars, buffet is 16,afternooon smoothie is 7 for 2,no coffee maker in hotel room, local call is 1 dollar, few Tv channels worth watching, going online is more expensive than other cities,I dont remember how much ,but is more than say Chicago or Denver.
Printing your boarding pass at one of those terminals would cost you 3.75.
Caesar Palace has better buffet for your money, one soda drink at the bar is 4.50 and dont forget to tip!
Bellagio and Wynn buffet would run you 30-40 dollars and there is always a line on weekend.
Most hotels have no coffee maker ,they want you to come downstairs and gamble.

If you want cheaper stuff,go to downtown Vegas where the Golden Nugget is,better wins as well.
Las Vegas cheap image is long gone, someone has to pay for the fancy fountains and roman statues and zillions of slot machines.
I picked up a $25 dollars Gloria Estefan token at Ceasar's,the only bargain I found.
As for discount hotel room,go to each hotel website,as the days get closer, the room rate gets marked down, you can book ahead, cancel and rebook at a lower rate.
There are coupons at hotel lobby for joining players club etc for buffet and shows and they will even give you a cheap camera for free.
Plenty of tables to play blackjack and poker and baccarat, smoking is allowed in the casino and you cant escape the smoke,I dont know why they cant filter it out.
There is a place by the tall coke bottle on the strip where you can buy theatre and show tickets at half price.
The place is touristie and crowded and dusty and paper litters everywhere,it is not even a nice place to visit anymore, unless you plan to win at the table!

Well you talked me out of Vegas, Hwahwa. Not the scene I want. Hey, how about the oldest city in the US, ST AuGUstINE???
Lots to do here, beaches, horse and buggy ride through the old town, boat ride on the St. Johns River - lots to see.

Vegas is great!! We used to go 2 x a year from the east coast. If you have never been there, there is much to do without gambling. Watch the travel channel. The fountains are my favorite, free and classy. Wynn's new place is to die for. Shopping, shopping, shopping every where +++. Don't be dissuaded by critics, what would they say about Times Square??

Don't stay at the Flamingo, Paris is great and has fun foods, MGM has restaurants to fit all budgets, the Bellagio is fabulous, but pricey, TI has been transformed, the Mirage is still cool. Etc, etc.

Caeasar Palace has a food court, every day they roast a turkey and you can either have a turkey sanwich for 5.95 or a turkey platter for 7.95.
If you must go online daily to check emails and Ebay, there are coffee houses where you can connect free with your laptop.
And bring your own coffee maker~!

Don't forget Ethel M's chocolate factory tour, it was still free the last time I went there and they have a great cactus garden. Food used to be really cheap but I guess I haven't been for a couple of years. If you get the free magazines at the hotel front desk there used to be buy one get one free for a lot of things. I still want to go, I love to people watch and there sure are a lot to watch there.

Hwahwa: We lived there for 20 years; they want you OUT of your room, down where the gambling is. That's why no coffee maker. We went back a few years ago, took a small suite at Caesars, and invited a group of our old friends to come for drinks. There were no icemakers on the floors (had to get ice from room service), and we had to leave the hotel to find mixers, etc. There were other glitches, all of which reminded us why we were glad to be living elsewhere.

It's very different for people who just visit occasionally, I know. Lots to see, good people watching, including the mafia family living next door to us there.

Hmm, local call is $1.00, who uses a hotel phone? That is what cell phones are for. Coffee maker in the room?? That is what coffee shops, breakfast buffets, room service is for.

Very few hotels sell mixers on their property, why would they? They want you to go to the bar or order from room service.

We stayed at the new Caesar's Towers a year ago. It was magnificent!! The room was huge, the bathroom was a big as most hotel rooms, marble, double sink, whirpool bath, separate shower, TV in the bathroom!! Luxury. We had a view of the fountains and the strip. There was an ice machine down the hall. In a room like that I do not need a coffee maker.

You don't go to Vegas to scrimp, you go there is live it up. Remember, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas and they are not talking about coffee.

I LOVE Vegas!
We take our own little travel Coffee Maker as well as an electric Hot Pot for making Tea. We buy cheap Souvenir mugs when we arrive and leave them in the room when we check out. We pack Tea & Coffee & Sugar as well as a couple of packets of cookies.

We have also stayed at the Flamingo and it was super. We spent a lot of our time next door at the Barbary Coast who have a super 24 hour restaurant.

We used coupons from the Coupon Books and got lots of deals. It can be as expensive as you want it to be and it certainly is not a cheap place anymore but there are deals to be had. City buses were $2.00 to go to Freemont Street.
We hardly spend anything gambling but spend more time walking and gawking!!

Check on the Vegas.com website for lots of good info.

I am longing to go again!

glassgrl, I would love to meet you. You are the first person on VD to do something very nice for me...remember what it was??? goes back about 6 years.

Also want to meet Ralphie & Tom. Got to meet Ralphie, not sure he's old enough for Vegas though.

As for Jack, I can't tell you how many times I have pictured him in my mind. He's funny as is Tom & sort of a mystery, never reveals much of himself in his posts. But I know he loves his cat & is a good friend & concerned person when someone needs help.

How about Florida Jack, it's cheaper in the summer.

$1.99 BREAKFASTS!!!!

My guess is you haven't been to Vegas in a while.

The cheap food is gone. Since 9/11, gambling no longer supports the rest of the casinos. Each area including restaurants are now self supporting and in turn, prices went up. Way up.

Downtown is still reasonable, but it's not like it once was.

September isn't summer Mcjane

Gosh - 6 years - has it really been that long?

Jack kind of reminds of Duff on Ace of Cakes on the Food Network. Crazy as h*ll but if I had to have a real job and could work anywhere I wanted I'd want to work for him.

Stone: When Howard Hughes came into Vegas in the early 70s and began his Vegas empire, the cheap food started to vanish. His hotel gurus said every area of the hotel needs to support itself. The locals were upset.

There are buses which will take you downtown, food is cheaper and odds of winning better, you will see locals there. But the whole idea of going to Las Vegas is to see the Bellagio,Wynn and Caesar .
But once you step inside and get over the fountain and the fancy shops and food court, they are all the same with rows and rows of slot machines.
The excuse they made of not having coffee maker in the room is -FIRE hazard!
The biggest convention each year in Vegas is the remainders, returns ,dollar store convention, over 175,000 people attend.
If you want to get together with food, casinos and beaches, think Aruba.

glassgrl, yes, 6 years ago.

What was I thinking....September!

I remember when the Philadelphia Inguirer & Bulletin newspapers ran ads for trips to LV. Free round trip air fare, free rooms & steak dinners for 99 cents.

It was kind of an isolated place & it was their way of getting you to come & gamble.

When Resorts International opened in 1978 in Atlantic City there were no offers like that.
They didn't need to because there were millions within an hour or two of driving time to get there & you even had to wait in line to get in.

Disneyland, I actually went there in 1956 with my Mom, by train from Columbus, Ohio. It was a fantastic trip and we stayed in a small hotel near the park. Our beds were made up as two couches during the day and then pulled out from under the end tables and magically became beds! You have to remember I was 10 at the time and had never stayed in a hotel before. I am looking forward to the fresh perked coffee and laundry service at your house!! Actually, it would be nice to meet everyone and if you get it together I would love to come to Vegas.
