I'm sure there's a bunch of Windows users out there that will shoot me down... but my advice is go with an Apple. The iMacs are very reasonably priced (as are the MacBooks)... and you get a product that will actually work. It's going to give you the best protection against Spyware/Adware/Viruses... and if you "have" to run a windows app... you can always install Parallels or VMWare with Windows.

Personally, I wouldn't think of going with anything else... but if you must go with a Windows based computer... try to find one with Windows XP... Vista is still FULL of bugs and frustrations... 'tis not a good time to buy a new computer if you're looking at windows systems...

Dell still sells certain computers with Windows XP installed on them. Since computers tend to go out of date so soon, I always buy about the cheapest I can find.

I recently bought a Dell Vostro 200 with 19-inch monitor for $399. On the Dell website, these are listed under the business section.

You could buy an Apple like this one.

I'm with eauction. If cheap is your deciding point by a PeeSee. If you'd had it to here with viruses, worms, nasties of all varieties, if you'd like to talk to a tech support person whose native language is English and ish't working for slave wages in the Himalayan foothills, buy a Mac.

Get one of these and you won't even have to buy a computer moniter - just hook it up to your TV.

profe51: Where do you think Apple products are made these days? Starts with "C", ends with "a", and it's not Canada.

I wasn't speaking of production fluffy. That's why I used the words "tech support". Everything's made in China, that goes without saying. Called AppleCare lately? They still speak English....

My son's MacBook laptop had an issue with the screen flickering. It's a year old and has an extended 3 year warranty. I called AppleCare this past Monday morning and spoke to an American in California. On Tuesday, an overnight FedEx arrived with a shipping box prepaid for overnight back. I sent the package on Wednesday. Yesterday at work I received a call informing me that the LCD and screen cable were being replaced and I should expect it back by this coming Tuesday.

PC Magazine, hardly an Apple-centric publication, always rates Apple's customer service above everybody else's.

There are not many options if you want to avoid Vista enabled computers. As was previously mentioned, Dell still sells computers with XP.

I purchased a Dell with XP, earlier this year. Works fine, and customer service was helpful, for questions that I had.

Linux works great for all my ebay needs, no reason to spend money on a mac.

Tony.

In a world without walls or fences who needs Windows and Gates?

After 3 store bought computers, I went this year and had one built.
Got exactly what I needed and saved quite a few dollars.
Will never buy another off the shelf.

If you know what you need this may very well be the way to go.

have bought 5 dells over the past few yrs...all still running great. Goto their site and browse under their OUTLET center. GREAT DEALS...usually are there only a FEW MINUTES...but always adding new ones. THEY ARE CHEAP. Mostly .. these are items people ordered and "built" but then backed out on the order.

Over the past 4 years, I've bought around 10 Dells; all are still working fine. Any problems I've had with them have been related to software, especially Windows XP, although they've generally been without major problems (except once, when I installed a MICROSOFT keyboard and mouse). I would not install/use Vista for less than 1% of Bill Gates' money.

When they die, I'm getting iMacs. I will probably take one of the Dells and install Linux. I don't expect that it will work for the family, but I want to see first.

being with a 'regular PC' since around 1991, i've always wondered what owing a Mac would be like. Mac people have touted their superiority for all this time. (not the 'people/owners'... they've touted the PC

i wonder if there is a tough learning curve.

I have to admit my Dell is REALLY easy to work on. You don't even need a screwdriver to take the case off and the parts are super cheap on Ebay. I still like my Dell a lot.

I'm still trying to downgrade my new HP that came with Vista installed. I want XP because everything I have works with that. I "thought" I could just format and install XP over Vista but it ain't so.

The only two makers that still offer XP is Dell and IBM I think. I know Dell does.

I cast a vote for Dell. I shopped their refurbished department and found one for about $350 its been humming along for 3 years. At that price if it dies I junk it and get a new one.
If I like the design of an Apple because the CPU and moniter are in one case. If I had extra $'s to spend...

aintrich: There is a learning curve, but it's not steep. Everyone I know who was competent using Windows and switched to Mac has found the new system more intuitive than Windows. As a user of both, I'd have to say I agree.

I bought a computer for my mother earlier this year and was impressed with Dell's ease of ordering and how it was delivered before they said it would be.

Look: anyone who says you've got to buy this or you've got to buy that without knowing you and what you're going to use this tool for is just speaking from a religious standpoint.

I've used a lot of different operating systems...started out with DOS, transitioned to Unix, began using Macs during the System 7 era and only relatively late in life bought a Windows computer. They all have/had strengths and weaknesses.
