Pixi's happy birthday thread for Neglus gave me an idea.

Neglus wrote about going to a small town establishment.

How about we post one of our favorite places to go out to. Sort of like that special place.

I will start.

One of my favorite places to go is Stillwater Minnesota. It's on the banks of the St. Croix River and boarders Wisconsin. It has many eateries, many of which has outdoor seating (not in the winter though). My favorite is a little bistro called, "Luna Rosa". It was built on the edges of a huge bluff and has many rooms that you actually dine in caves. The also have a wine cellar in the caves. They specialize in Italian food.

My neighborhood Florida/Cuban cuisine restaurant, Pambiche. http://www.pambiche.com/ Unfortunately, the rest of Portland found out about it and parking in my neighborhood is darn impossible now.

Steve and I drive about an hour up the road every Sunday to have breakfast at a little hole in the wall place at the Alyeska Ski Resort in Girdwood.

He gets in line to order food while I try and snag a table or at least a couple of seats at someone else's table. There are only about 10 tables in the joint. In the summer they have additional picnic tables outside. We've sat with some really interesting people from all over the world.

We always order 2 of the scrambled eggs with spinach and mushrooms with a grilled tomato on the side. A side of fried potatoes and onions to share. It comes with toast and you can slather on their homemade jams. Sometimes if we are really hungry we'll order the giant cinnamon roll with butter.

You can buy a huge jar of their jam for $25. We always have a jar of the strawberry rhubarb at home.

If we get there late and they are done serving breakfast we order one of their bottomless bowls of soup, beef barley on Sunday's. On the side they serve a huge homemade roll and butter.

We really miss the drive on the Sunday's we don't have time to go out there. It really is a nice time for us to connnect after a busy week.

You realize, of course, that this is basically the "traditional English breakfast." Only thing missing is the bangers.

It does sound wonderful.

We usually have Sunday breakfast at Vic's, a hole-in-the-wall in San Carlos, CA, whose only virtue is that they make the best waffles in the world. Two waffles and an order of diced ham and scrambled eggs to share.

Our favorite place, though, is Barbara's Fishtrap, Princeton-by-the-Sea, CA, a seafood restaurant in an old building that used to be a bait store (no jokes, please) right there at Pillar Point Harbor. It's pricey but worth it, as evidenced by the lines of folks waiting to get in. For those interested in surfing, this is a couple of stones' throws away from the famed Mavericks. There is a good deal of fly-in traffic as Half Moon Bay airport is in easy walking distance.

Mountain Home Inn, Mt Tam. My all time favorite, hands down.

Gorgeous views, excellent food and cocktails, romantic accommodations, fantastic hikes in every direction and Muir Woods is just a short, early morning waddle away.

I plan to die there. Hopefully.

TWO restaurants in FLORIDA have knocked my socks off:

If yer ever in ORLANDO, don't miss:

Texas de Brazil

Expensive (flat charge of $40/adult), but well worth twice that...

And, for the SEAFOOD lover, catch the catch at:

Guppy's

in Clearwater Beach...

In Boston, there is, OF COURSE:

Joe Tesci's in the NORTH END

or, to PIG-OUT on PASTA...

The Prince's Grotto factory outlet restaurant for Prince Spaghetti ("Hey, Anthony!') in Lawrence...

Oi!

Now, I'm HUNGRY!

Our favourite place in Victoria is Barb's Place....it is on the Harbour and set amongst a little Village of Floating Homes. You sit outside and eat at picnic tables and there are several resident Harbour Seals to keep the Tourists amused. http://www.barbsplace.ca

We also meet some wonderful people there...last Summer a young girl from Minneapolis who had never left her State and was travelling across the US & Canada.
They close in the Winter but will be open in the next couple of weeks and my mouth is watering!

Hyde's Restaurant in Hamilton, Ohio. I live in Fairfield which is about 23 miles north of downtown Cincinnati. Hamilton is just north of me. Small little family restaurant in an old clapboard house. Been there since God was a pup. Best good old American food on the planet. Still has a Blue Plate Special everyday and don't even get me started on the homemade Banana Cream Pie.

tom - I noticed you didn't recommend anyplace in Jax It kind of made me remember when we lived there and everybody RAVED over this one seafood restaurant and we went. DH ordered grouper and......it wasn't grouper. Don't know what it was but it wasn't grouper. (of course when questioned they swore up and down it was grouper but then they have that problem here too. The TV stations run quality checks and so many time what they advertise as grouper is not.)

The best place we found to eat in Jax was a seafood place south of Craig Municipal airport? Behind a movie theater? The Maui Maui was out of this world!

My favorite place to eat is in Birmingham Al at Johnny Rays BBQ. My favorite food is Prime Rib and I guess if it's local it has to be Boar's Head in the off season when the tourists don't over run it.

Capt Anderson's here in Panama City Beach used to be my hands down all time favorite except the last two times I've been I was disappointed that my grilled shrimp had been previously frozen and now that they have all kinds of regulations on what kind of fish you can catch and how many I can never get my favorite char grilled Red Snapper anymore.

I have two places. Loose Moose Cafe is in Sagamore Hills about 1/2 hour south of me. It's a great place to eat and listen to bands. I've been there so much the owner, Debbie, knows me by name. The other place is in Peninsula near where our Marcia lives. That's about 40 minutes or so away. It's called Fishers. They have the best Bar-b-Q pork sandwiches I've ever had. I also can't wait to get there in the spring for the homemade draft rootbeer!

I'll get back to you with great places in St. Augustine, but then you have to visit me, of course. This is a great little city and the oldest in USA so lots of history too. We took the carriage ride around the town and then went out to dinner. It was wonderful. I've lived here about 2-1/2 yrs and like it much better then Miami.

The best place I have ever been to is a French restaurant in a suburb of Chicago called La Reserve, anything everything is good and expensive.
They later stopped offering lunch ,dinner only ,then they just shut it down because it is just too much work.
I heard there is another La Reserve somewhere in the country, dont know where??

yumm... i'm hungry for breakfast now! my favorite places are Fisher's in Peninsula, OH where we meet up with cheryl & ken once in awhile, and also a little restaurant in cuyahoga falls called the french coffee shop; they have a grilled chicken sandwich on a big long french roll, slathered with homemade mayonnaise, and awesome french onion soup.

Hey, Marcia! I've been thinking about Fisher's for a few weeks now. Can't wait for spring, homemade rootbeer and a bar-b-que pork sandwich! And, of course, lunch with you and Tom.

One of our Jax favorites is Clark's Fish Camp on Julington Creek.
We started going there when it was just one table and a bar area where you could get oysters on the half shell.
Now it's a major tourist attraction with the large exhibits of stuffed animals. Lions tigers monkeys - you name it. Sounds creepy but it's really interesting. Here's their website (sorry I can't make a link): http://www.clarksfishcamp.com/index.html

For some reason, VD has a wacky word-wrap feature that screws up many url's...Let's give it a try! Might need to use a TINY URL?

http://www.clarksfishcamp.com/index.html

Nope, this one worked fine...

LadyJ:

The EO board uses UBB for its code, which is slightly different than HTML...

To make a CLICKABLE LINK, Ralphie advises ye walketh thisa way:

[url*]THE_URL_OF_YER_LINK_HERE[/url*]

REMOVE the starry (*) thing-a-ma-bobs, and VIOLA! Yer cooking with skunk-oil!

PS: There's a QUIZ tomorrow! Professor Ralphie asks: "How do ya post a PICTURE?"

Hey LadyJ... I've BEEN to Clark's Fish Camp too!... went a couple summers ago while visitin' my kin in Jax.

Cheryl... the air outside actually feels warm today! ... but there's still over 2 feet of shoveled up snow on the sides of our driveway and sidewalks. LOL

I have tons of favorites in Orange County, CA. My absolute favorite is dining at Las Brisas in Laguna Beach, CA. It is a great Mexican food restaurant with spectacular views of the coast in both directions while dining on their patio. The Napa Rose for fine dining which is located in Disneyland's Grand California Hotel. I have tons more too many to list.
