Looks too light colored to be a sugar beet (the ones I have seen have been more round and dark red).

I wish I could read what it says on the tin that the girl is holding - looks interesting.

Hi,
I think it probably is a sugar beet. If you Google Images, sugar beet, you'll see what I mean.
In actual fact, the sugar beets I've seen loaded in trucks are rounder but that doesn't mean much! Could be different varieties.

Thanks, all. The girl is holding a Swift's Shortening can. It looks like she's filled it with pea pods.

I think it is a family garden. Could that be a large radish type veggie? I think there is something that starts with a D, like Dalcon or something.

I had the spelling wrong, it is Daikon.

I thought it was a parsnip at first, but the foliage seems to be wrong.

We had fields of sugar beet behind our house in England, and they looked very like big parsnips. They are quite light in color when cleaned, we would chew on them for the sweetness, (we didn't get much candy in those days!)

I guess I'll go with RPPC Children in Vegetable Garden for the title- and then go with guesses in my description - it won't make a difference in price but I really like to find out all I can about a card before I list it. It's one of the few joys selling on eBay now holds for me.

It does look like a daikon (white turnip),the best is to look at the leaves.
Japanese women in the old days will slice two and put them under their armpits as deordorant.
It is also a diuretic.
But you usually see them in Asian countries, they grow them in California now.

When they put those Turnips in their armpits hwa, how did they keep them there? Did they go into the stir fry after their deodorant qualities wore off? Waste not want not...
BTW, I thought Daikon was a type of radish, not a turnip. They sure taste like radishes....

Changed my mind, I don't think it's a horseradish, wrong shape.
Most likely a sugar beet because they are off white & long. The round red ones are called red beets or just beets.
Didn't know this, found the info on Google.
I thought a sugar beet was another name for a red beet, but I see a sugar beet is a different vegetable.

Prof,
You are correct,it is not turnip,it is one kind of radish and it tastes like radish.
They are popular in Asian supermarket and sell for 38 cents a lb.
As for the Japanese women using them as deordarant,I dont know how they keep them in place under the armpit,I guess they can wear a patch ,since they wear kimonos in those days ,no one can tell.
The Japanese also shred them and serve them on the side with their meat dish,it helps in digesting the food and cleanse the blood.
Some one claims it also tenderise the tougher meat such as octopus, may be thats why the Chinese often add them to a meat stew of tougher meat like beef tripe, pork stomach.
The one in the postcard is not horseradish, horseradish has a darker color and coarser skin

This is all so interesting. I agree Daikon is my bet too!
The Horseradish that I have seen look more like a Parsnip shape & colour.
Has anyone ever peeled and grated Horseradish? It sure makes the eyes water, I had to do it outside and wear goggles!!

At first, I thought parsnip too, but the leaves aren't right.
Could it be an over-sized white radish? The style of leaves would be right.
Judging by the other plants in the background, I would say this is a radish that didn't get picked in early summer when it should have been. The plant by the little girls' left foot is cabbage. That is a late season crop and it looks to be close to maturity. And full grown onions right behind them. The leaves don't seem right for Sugar Beets.

Stone, you're probably right. In my google of white radish, I ran across the artist who makes beautiful parchment bowls from fruits & veggies.
