Will someone please explain to me how not allowing money orders or checks help out my customers? Buyers are hard enough to come by so let’s just chase more away. Brilliant just brilliant

The folks at eBay are truly idiots.

OH PS IIn 9 years I have NEVER had a check bounce! So PayPal seller protection doesn't mean squat!

I've had one get returned for NSF in 9 years - and the customer paid me when I notified her. Don't do us any more favors Ebay - you've done enough.

I had one bounce, but even before my bank notified me, the buyer sent a money order to cover it.
Protection = Greed

Ebay is stating the buyers have a 50% higher risk of not getting their order if they pay with check or money order. That's a lot of BS too.

I for one have never not sent an item because the customer paid with MO or check. I still get customers who pay with OMG... cash and they get their orders too.

I get a lot of business checks from designers, etc. I guess Paypal's answer is an e-check. The float on that is ridiculous given that you can know within 24 hours if a check is any good.

I do not believe this, at least in my case. I have never had any problem with MO or check payers.

eBay says-

items paid with check or money order are 80% more likely to result in an item not received (INR) than those paid with credit card or PayPal. Also, buyers who pay with check or money order are 50% more likely to leave negative feedback than those who pay with electronic methods. So starting in late October, 2008, we are moving to 100% electronic payments - credit cards, ProPay, or PayPal.

I've had three customers with bounced checks on ebay. Two made good, one didn't. Considering I've been on ebay for over 11 years, and have had tens of thousands of transactions, that is a MUCH better ratio than I've had with paypal - yes, paypal...I've had several echecks not go through.

What do I do when I get an echeck - I hold the order if I don't feel comfortable shipping.

What do I do if I get a check - the same thing.

This has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with safety, and EVERYTHING to do with making paypal the only realistic payment for most sellers. Right now, almost all of my payment does come from paypal, but not all of it. It is still nice to have a choice, but that won't be the case soon. I think I will probably lose some customers, as will everyone.

Check and money order payments will still be allowed BUT sellers can not request such forms of payment. They have to be buyer initiated.

As I see it now is the time to start informing your regular buyers that they will have options. Once the rules go into effect you could be sanctioned for doing so,

you can accept cash, mo, checks but cannot put it in the auction or ebay emails.

I have regular customers that only pay with MOs

Yes, that is true, and it might allow me to keep my current customers - but I am unsure if I get a question from a potential customer if I should say yes. The last thing I want to happen is to be booted for a TOS violation over a low value check.

If you have regular Buyers who use Money Orders and Cheques then you have their e-mail addresses from the sales you have made to them.
Just e-mail them directly and explain the new rules and that you would be happy to continue receiving payments by MO or Cheque.

I have 3 Canadian buyers who buy from me regularly who refuse to use Paypal. I certainly wouldn't want to lose them.

I guess this means that we now have to go through all our store items, for me, the third time, and take out the other shipping options, unless eBay does it automatically. I really can't face revising 400 items again, and I don't see how you could do it in bulk.

It's too hard to get PayPal to slide inside of the G string.

The folks who post on this forum are seasoned Ebay sellers, but since anyone can sell on Ebay.there are some sellers who just sign up,sell and skip town with the bidder proceeds.

When checks and money orders are not allowed, does anyone think paypal fees will be increased?

In over 9 years of selling on eBay, I've never had a bounced check or a problem with a money order. I HAVE had several buyers who said they'd pay after they set up a PayPal account...and guess what happened? They never paid! While the vast majority of my customers do pay with PayPal (and, truth be told, the changes probably will not impact my sales all that much), what bothers me is that PayPal is telling me what form of payment I can accept. I have no problem with eBay setting some limits on what can be sold on their site. However, I really don't think it's their business telling me I can no longer accept checks or money orders for payment. It's just the principle of the thing.

I have a feeling that if eBay required payment by check or money order, there would be a whole bunch of posts here with horror stories of bounced checks and fraudulent money orders.

As a seller, I don't mind checks or money orders, since the merchandise I sell is geared to collectors, so the odds of a scam are low, and I don't have the PayPal fee. But as a buyer, I far prefer the convenience and security of PayPal. Having been on both sides, if I knew that a seller I dealt with succssfully in the past preferred a check, I would do so.

Too bad that Yahoo decided to close shop when they did.

If they were still around today, they would be in position to pounce on ebay.

ok, so I subscribe to a service (similar to vendio) that posts my auctions for me. As each listing ends, this service captures their email addresses and will automatically send them an email letting them know the total cost for the item including postage.

SO.... If this service (which is NOT ebay) sends out an email stating that they can send check or money order, is that violating eBay rules?

I think it is violating ebays rules since we are responsible for the content of any emails that are sent to buyers.

Nope. Ebay cannot control post auction e-mails not sent via ebay's broken system.

If I stay with ebay, I am going to stress that I prefer to not accept PayPal, but will accept it only if the other choices aren't suitable for the buyer.

What am I going to promote. First and foremost, Google Checkout. Then checks, money orders and even yes, CASH.

Then I will continue to promote my website to each and every buyer.

I may be all wet on this but you can contact your customers and have whatever in the email from Vendio or whatever contact method you use.

You just can't put the other payment options in an email generated from eBays system

They start restricting my business/personal email then we have a major issue. Unless of course eBay is satan and this is the New World Order. I need more coffee.

Could you put your name and address in the end of auction email?

Not mentioning mailed payment...but it would be subtlety implied.

EBAY'S way of sucking more fees from the sellers, they are getting way out of hand with what they expect sellers to pay..
Ebay needs to wake up, if it not broke do not fix it.....
