Just out of curiosity I decided to look up a few items available at wholesale. In the few items I looked at and compared against eBay pricing, the numbers simply don't add up even buying in bulk.
One example:
Otterbox Armor Case for iPhone - $25 each wholesale, minimum purchase 44 units at $1100. These regularly sell for $29-35 on eBay.

The wholesaler has to pay Ebay -FVF and Paypal,it is not like the real wholesale world where buyer pays cash.
I bet if you are going to buy 44 units, they will come down in price.

Reads like a wholesaler gouging sellers. I would expect that dingus from a far eastern sweat shop might cost no more than buck or 2 perhaps less. You would have to make customers think yours are special and all the rest are selling cheap junk and list them for $59.99. A special limited price reduction from 79.97!

I can only think that brick and mortar's or external websites might use it to test the waters on merchandise. That would be the only logical thing I can come up with.
