During the Auction: Verifying Items continued ...

Between the Lines
Read auction item descriptions not only for what they say, but also for what they don't say. For example, ask yourself if the write-up includes sufficient information to determine if the item is legit. Or, if there is seemingly enough text, is it vague, ambiguous, misleading, or contradictory? If, after thoroughly reading a description, you have more questions and concerns than answers, you'll want to avoid doing business with this particular seller.

Email the Seller
If investigating the seller, inspecting the photos, and carefully reading the item description still fails to quell any uncertainties you may have about the verification of an item, then go ahead and email the seller directly. Inquire about the history and background of the merchandise. Ask about the seller's own verification process. Did he or she have the item appraised, for example, and by whom? Often, a simple email communication can clarify any doubts you may have. If, on the other hand, the seller's response is less than satisfying, or if there is no response at all, you'll be better informed when making your decision.

Do the Research
The bottom line: When it comes to verifying an item up for sale at an online auction site, the buyer's best tool is knowledge. Do your homework before you bid. Become an expert in your particular area of interest. Read magazines, subscribe to newsletters or mailing lists, utilize message boards or chat rooms, communicate with people who share your interest. But if you're interested in a current auction and don't have the time to do the necessary legwork, remember that the Internet itself is a great--and quick--resource for verification.
