Everybody knows that good pictures are essential for successful auction sales. But not all sellers have the Web space to store their photos. Moreover, providers like AOL offer only so much free space with each user's account. The answer? Well, many have chosen to take advantage of the free image hosting services offered by their favorite auction services company. With that in mind, here is a quick primer on uploading photos to Vendio for PC and Mac users.
First Things First
Before you upload your images to Vendio, make sure you are using a browser listed in the Browser Compatibility Chart.
Also, make sure that your images are saved in the right file format. All images intended for the Web should be in GIF, PNG or JPEG format. JPEG is preferable because it saves images in millions of colors while retaining a small byte size.
Finally, it's wise to compress your images using programs like JPEGCruncher and GIFCruncher, which reduce the size of your image, but not the quality. Dave Central is a useful resource for image compression utilities. Remember that large images take a long time to download, particularly if the user is using a dial-up (modem) connection, so keep your image file sizes to a minimum.
PC Users
So, you are in cahoots with Bill Gates, huh? Well, this information for Windows PC owners is right up your alley. In this case, you will be uploading images from your PC's C: drive to Vendio's server.
Step 1: Make a new folder on your C: drive where you'll keep your pictures. You don't have to do this, but it makes locating your images easier.
- With your pointer positioned on your desktop, click the right mouse button. A pop-up menu will appear.
- Highlight the word "New" in the pop-up window with your cursor. Another pop-up menu will appear.
- Highlight and click the word "Folder" in the pop-up. A new folder will appear on your desktop.
- Name the folder. Save your edited images to this folder.
Step 2: Access the Online Uploader.
- Login and click the Image Hosting tab.
- Click the 'Upload Images' button to access the Online Uploader.
- Or, select 'Upload Images' from the Jump to dropdown menu located in the upper right of most pages.
Step 3: Create a new folder to upload to.
- On the Upload Standard Images page, enter a name for your folder in the "Create New Folder" field, or simply leave the default name.
- Click the 'Create' button.
Step 4: Select your files and upload.
- Increase the number of upload fields on the page if necessary by selecting the number from the 'Show upload fields' dropdown at the top left of the page. You can upload as many as 50 images at once.
- Click the first Browse button. In the dialog box that appears, navigate to the folder containing your image, select your image, then click Open.
- Rename the image if you want by editing the corresponding name in the Image Name field (you do not need to type the file extension as part of the file name).
- Select the folder you want to upload to.
- Repeat these steps for each additional image. It is not necessary to fill in all upload fields.
- When you have finished selecting all your images, click the 'Upload' button. You will see the status of each image as it's being uploaded.
- When uploading is complete, you will be shown a confirmation page.
- If you have uploaded any images with the same names as ones already in your account, you will be given several choices: keep the auto-created name, rename it to something else, or replace the existing image online. To keep the auto-created name, take no additional action. To rename it, type in a new name. To replace the existing image, select the Replace option.
- To leave the confirmation page and save any rename or replace selections, click the 'Upload More' button, or click the 'Done' button.
