THE MODEL SHIP IS 35" long x 27" high
XEBEC
Xebec, was used for centuries in the Mediterranean as a merchant ship. Because of her speed it was not long before Corsairs, the pirates of the Mediterranean, chose the Xebec as their ship for attacking and seizing merchant ships.
Xebec sported fourteen fierce s sitting low at the waists, allowing her to hole her ship of attack just inches above the waterline. With escape impossible, the pirates were able to easily take over the ship without having to worry about their prey attempting escape. Enabling close action, six culverins were mounted along the poop deck; used also incase the crew tried to mutiny.
Her many oars enabled her to keep readily moving and fiercely attacking even in the absence of wind. All of these exceptional features fitted the Xebecc as a superior pirate ship always giving her an upper hand in battle.
The one drawback to Xebec speedy and agile design was her low freeboard and shallow draught made her vulnerable to swamping, and she would roll heavily on moderately sized waves or larger. These same features are also what made her so successful in light seas.
THE MODEL SHIP IS NOT A TOY AND SHOULD BE KEPT AWAY FROM CHILDREN.
The model is handcrafted from scratch by skilled craftsmen. The ship is built according to scale of the original ship through original plans or, pictures using plank on frame construction. The hull is joined by multi-pieces of dry thin wooden bar together. Inside the hull a special glue is used which helps thin wooden bars stay close to one another and not split, crack or twist when the weather changes. The construction method is entirely by hand and it takes hundreds of man hours to finish.
Only the highest quality woods like rosewood, ebony, blackwood, mahogany and teak are used in building the model ships. In general, this is how the following woods are used:
Ebony (for blocks and small details) English Sycamore (for the hull) Rosewood (for the hull) Blackwood (for the hull) Mahogany (for the masts, squares, crow nests) Cherrywood (for the deck) Canons, muskets, anchors and other tiny details are made of metal (for decoration) Sails and rigging lines are made of linen.
