Idaho Transfer DVD Keith Carradine Peter Fonda (1973)
Teenager Karen Braden (Kelley Bohanon) is a troubled mental hospital
outpatient who is taken by her father George and sister Isa to a
government facility near the Craters of the Moon lava fields in Idaho.
The project there was commissioned to develop matter transference, but
made a different discovery: time travel. They also discovered that a
mysterious ecological catastrophe will soon wipe out civilization. Other
government agancies want to shut down the secret project.
The time travel process has negative health effects, though. Adults "not
much older than 20" are unable to survive for long, as their kidneys
hemorrhage shortly after the experience. So the scientists decide to
only send young people 56 years into the future so they can build a new
civilization. On the return trip from her orientation transfer, Karen
accidentally kills her sister. Unable to find help, she flees back to
the future again, where she has become withdrawn, despite the sympathies
of the arriving young researchers. Eventually, the time machines are
taken offline by the government. The young researchers decide to hike
toward Portland, Oregon, though things do not look good for the
project's goals. Increasingly disheartened, Karen goes back to the time
station, where she is attacked by another researcher who had been driven
mad. In desperation, Karen uses the time machine to escape and goes
further into the future, where she encounters the project's descendants.
