|FLAME AT THE PIER (1962) - REMASTERED
Namida o shishi no tategami ni - (aka: Tears on the Lion's Mane) A tale of suppressed passions and violence of youth, painted in the vital strokes of the Japanese New Wave: melodrama and poetry, blood and politics, rock 'n' roll.
In one of his most visually striking early films, echoing elements of 1950s American social drama and often compared to Elia Kazan's 'On the Waterfront', director Masahiro Shinoda presents a look at the codes of obligation.
Set in the docks of Yokohama, an aspiring singer and Yokohama dockworker tries to break up a waterfront strike out of a misguided sense of loyalty to his crooked boss, believing that his manager was responsible for saving his life as a baby, he falls victim to a manipulative cycle of deceit and revenge in Shinoda’s twist on contemporary films of rebellious youth.
