First Volume Entitled:

Second Volume Entitled:

The Seconde Volume Of Ecclesiasticall Historie, Conteyning The Acts And Monvments Of Martyrs, With A Generall Discourse Of These Latter Persecutions, Horrible Troubles And Tumultes... From The Time Of King Henry The VIII To Queene Elizabeth

Very early Fifth Edition of this landmark work of religious history. Two Massive Folio Volume Set! The first tome begins on page 1 and is lacking the Title page and preliminaries. The Set has a total of 1948 pages plus an incomplete 7 page index in rear of the second tome. (with the Second Volume beginning on page 729 in tome # 1.) The First tome ends on page 942 and the Second Tome begins with page 945 so it is lacking leaf (943/944). Both HUGE VOLUMES are illustrated with 140 engraved plates and one map, also including many woodcut head and tail pieces and initials, although this particular copy is noted as having two larger folding plates which are now absent. Together, each of these two huge volumes measure 15.25" tall by 10.5" wide by 3" thick, with their Original Leather bindings, which are now heavily worn. This would include both covers to second volume now detached but present, and Volume one also has both original boards loosly held by ropes. There are a few pages with tears (some with recent repairs) but most pages are clean and white ... though some light browning of pages with age on a few or occasional minor soiling, and some are loose. The index in volume two is also heavily edge worn and loose and is lacking the first and last leaves. Tome 2 is also lacking the last ? pages of text (it ends on page 1,948) and any colophon if there was one. Yet for the most part, internally the bindings are still holding strong, making them a most worthy candidate for a through restoration and rebinding, and (depending upon your appreciation for their great age) could be considered to be overall fair condition. This rare early 1596 / 1597 Set is being sold as is. Postage in U.S. is $35.

Genuinely a very scarce pair of books, seldom seen for sale on the open market, in fact have only traced two copies for sale at auction, in 1980 and 1981, and those both similarly were defective in some respect. The famed Foxs Book of Martyrs is an apocalyptically oriented English Protestant account of the tragic persecutions of Protestants, mainly conducted in England, recounting in gruesome detail the experiences of hundreds of people burnt alive or were otherwise tortured for their religious beliefs. By compiling this compelling record, Foxe helped enormously to demonstrate the historical justification for the foundation of the Church of England as a contemporary embodiment of the true and faithful church, rather than as a newly established Christian denomination. The book was very widely read, and still holds high regard, having deeply influenced English thinking for centuries. This particular edition was issued by Peter Short, a well known Elizabethan printer, who among his other notable printed works would include two quartos of Shakespeare's Henry VI, Part One (1598), and editions of The Rape of Lucrece and Venus and Adonis. Also interesting from a historical perspective is that this copy bears gift inscriptions in both volumes from Eliz. Knightley of Fausly (or Fawsly), to Devereux Knightly, dated 1697.
