It is excellant because there is no way they can have that many foreigners in for that much time and not show their true colors.
They will end up busting heads or arresting so many that they wqill never be host again.
These people are scum that run the country, and they have the police that you would expect. These paramilitary cops are NOT going to change their style for a few weeks no matter what orders come down from on high.
If someone does not hop to when they say jump they will crack some heads. Western journalists are used to dstanding their ground and saying I will film whatever I want fella. Not gonna fly there.

Zazzie, not far north of NYC, yes.

Gravid, my thought was that they are going to spend early 2008 arresting and hiding away one, two maybe ten million potential 'problems'. Everyone will walk away heartily impressed with China. But I do hope you are right.

I thought for sure it would be Toronto, but like you say Zazzie, at least Whistler is still in the running

China?.......yikes. I don't believe a country that doesn't take human rights seriously should be involved in anything. Not only human rights, but animals rights. They raise St. Bernard's like cows and eat them. Leave your dogs alone and maybe try cooking up some of your neighbours!!

If you can eat a cow, why not a St. Bernard?

"They raise St. Bernard's like cows and eat them"-kraftdinner

That's funny, cause on a Chinese message board there was a comment about us raising cows like Saint Bernards and eating them.

as much as I personally find some cultures eating habits offensive, I can't see judging them on because of it.

Pigs are more intelligent than dogs, but most of us see them a just a food source.

Eating horses in not done a lot in North America but it is quite popular in Europe.

You are absolutely right james. There is no difference.

I don't eat meat, so I'm repulsed by it in the first place, but to see inside one of China's "meat factories" with all those dogs hanging from meat hooks, almost made me sick. (I saw a show on this last night.) It just made me feel like there are no boundaries anymore and I wondered what animal would be next, hanging from those hooks. It's hard to talk about.

P.S. I don't like China.

edited to add:

jlp - I see my prejudice...

zazzie - I already have them pre-judged, so this tidbit only adds to my ignorance. I do see that.

China's got 7 years to put their house in order. Sort of like when relatives are coming over and you have to make the house look tops. I'm always glad when the relatives leave, but I do appreciate the clean home I was forced into. I think it's good China got the Olympics. Now it's time for them to start dusting.

I guess the target pistol events will use real people, probably student, as targets. Almost guarantees a Chinese Gold, Silver and Bronze as the rest of the world is too woosy to shoot innocent people.

Well, maybe the Russian will get the bronze......

Looks like somebody's pockets were lined...yet again. It's pure madness that the OHC would agree to allow a country with the human rights abuse record that China has to host the Olympics. Oh there's money that changed hands somewhere. You can bet on it. It's outrageous and I predict that there will be a huge backlash and protests.

They will be dusting people into graves and jails in preparation for our viewing pleasure.

Well the political opposition has years to get ready also. If I were them I would be recruiting people in school NOW who will be in the work force THEN and be telling them to keep their nose clean and not be visable politically until the olympics and then come out from under cover when it is to late to wisk then away to Mongolia.

I have a feeling China might allow some 'dissidents' to have just a couple of pre-approved token demonstrations so the rest of the world can see how 'tolerant' they are.

Beijing was Juan 'what ever his name is'--favourite. Some feel that he is gunning for a Nobel Peace Prize and that by giving Beijing the games they will clean up some of the Human Rights issues and everyone will say

Gee--look what Juan did !!!

Well, isn't that nice? What a place to honor competition of world athletes. China.

This is one of many sites that give alittle more info about what a "great thing" this represents to the world. Not.

There may be a new event added called The Tiannamen Tank Challenge. After years of practice, each nation's best young dissidents will have to face down an oncoming tank in Tiannamen Square ...

But seriously, China should be excluded from consideration in world events like this. But they're like a bad relative that you have to invite to family gatherings just so you don't have to put up with the fall-out (appropriate word choice?) afterwards.

If one erases Tibet/Tibetians and China/Chinese and replaces it with the USA and Amercian Indians, looks a tad familiar, doesnt it?

Tibetans are often imprisoned without trial and are tortured.
Tibetan women are forced into sterilization, and newborn infants are routinely killed by Chinese authorities.
Buddhist monks and nuns are not free to practice their religionóeven to display a picture of the Dalai Lama.
The Tibetan culture is being systematically destroyed.
Children in Tibet are not allowed to learn the Tibetan language and must escape to India to receive an education in Tibetan.

Zazzie, I have no idea what is happening on reservations here in the USA, NOW. But yes, China is doing what the website up there says...NOW. Many people have signed petitions to stop the Olympics from being held in Bejing. Looks like they lost. What a shame, isnt it?

To see for yourself, type in FREE TIBET in any search engine.

Hepburn, I realize that the Tibet issue is happening now, it was your reference to the USA and the First Nations that I had a problem with. Every nation in the world has human rights problems and certainly the USA, Canada, Australia etc need to work on the issues, but they certainly have improved from jsut the recent past.

If we have to look at only past sins and not improvements--no one should host the Olympics.

I'm still pissed at the Normans at nearly wiping out the Saxon culture

I dont think any country can be proud of past sins, zazzie. I certainly dont think the USA is. And no, not to judge the past with the improving the future and learning by it. However, China is still doing these atrocities with Tibet and Beijing is NOT the correct place to host the Olympics (JMHO).

Well each person who wants to compete can decide if they wish to go. If any substantial portion of those that are acnowledged as at the top of their class world wide decide not to go it would send a strong message to not only the Chinese but the Olympic committee.

I have had some real issues with the nationalism involved as I remember one shot putter who said this is about individuals and not nations and was widely renounced because they basically said he owed everything he was to being born a free American and at the time I though what a bunch of crap as the founding fathers said government is to serve the people and these people have it backwards that you should be so appreciative that government has GIVEN you what is your natural right that you should just be overwhelmed in patriotic fervor. Excuse me if
I don't fall in worship of the Father Land.
Fact was he would have probably not had to work for a living and just trained at his sport in a lot of other countries.

Whether any have that strong of feelings about this to pass up their private moment of glory when they often have a narrow window of
personal competitivness is a real question.
