As you all know, my company (I guess I can name it now since I no longer work there, it's Motorola), has been having heavy layoffs in Arizona. I became a statistic today. The only good news is that I will get 11 weeks of severance pay, medical through December and the services of an outplacement company to help me get another job (courtesy of Motorola). And as I said before, hubby is being let go from his company tomorrow. So we'll both be out of work for who knows how long...
I have to run for now, someone needs the phone. I'll be back in a bit!

posted on July 30, 2001 06:28:21 PMmouse, This is the first time I've looked in for a couple of days and I'm sorry to read your post.
However, and you may not enjoy reading what I have to say, but I think that maybe it is a good thing that this has happened.
You now know exactly where you stand. The months of uncertainty and worry about your job are finished.
Nothing in this life is ever certain. The reality of life these days is that there is no such thing as "secure" employment. The bottom line for companies these days is the dollar, nothing else. Employees are expendable, just like an obsolete machine.
You now have a heaven sent opportunity to clearly think out your future. Maybe you can seriously work for yourself. You have the talent and skill to use a computor, you know how ebay works so perhaps a well thought out business plan will reap rewards for you. It may be that you have other ideas of your own. Whatever they are, pursue them with a passion.
I know that you are not afraid of work so put that attitude to positive use for you. Sit down and objectively asses your skills and those of your husbands. Decide if you can use them to work for yourself.
Going alone is never easy, never secure, but believe me, at the end of the day it is very fulfilling.
Take a step back from your current situation and carefully think about your options. Make certain that your decisions are practical and achievable. Once you decide which path to take don't look back. Sometimes there's a lot to be said for burning your bridges. The only way left to you is forward.
Whatever you decide or plan to do, you have my best wishes for the future.
Bob.
Bob, Downunder but never down.

Wow I am sorry Mouse.
One thing - If either of you get a real great offer you are free to move.
The black Honda is dead - I mourn. I never put one in the junk yard before. $6k damage on a $4k car. Bugs me I just put tires on it.
I am going to a storage locker auction in the morning. They will have about 15 up.
I bought gold earrings for my wife on eBay - they folded the posts over flat so they would fit in the envelope!
i am going to show them on the eBay outlook.

Small comfort though this may be, Mouse, at least you know you were let go for economic reasons only, rather than for your job performance, or because someone in management didn't like you.
The latter two causes of dismissal have a way of causing self-doubt and bitterness, but in your case, you can say, "The problem was them, not me" and say it with confidence.

Mouse, Sorry to hear that.
Bob makes some very good points. Getting laid off many years ago was the best thing that happened for me work wise. I hope you can say the same down the road.

Ok, I will admit I have been wanting to leave there for a few years now. But it's always been the money and benefits that kept me there. My income was always the steady one and the bigger one since hubby & I have been together. So I've felt trapped into staying there because my education and skill level I feel could not get me another job with comparable pay. (At least not skills I have a piece of paper for. My grammar, spelling, computer skills and common sense are much better than a lot of people I've known at work!)
So yes, this is my chance to start anew, scary as that may be for me. I like comfort and security! They have contracted with an outplacement company to help all of us find new jobs, even change careers. The buzz is that the people who have taken advantage of their services have done well, some of them even making more now than they did at Motorola. I'm already signed up for their resume, interviewing, skill assessment seminar for next week. They've also given me a decent severance package and a continuation of my medical benefits. We shall see what happens next!
posted on July 30, 2001 07:43:58 PM
Thank goodness you have the severance and health benefits, that gives you a little bit of a breather to get it together. Along with the outplacement help you could be on top of the world in just a little bit.
Does your hubby get any kind of severence package, or just a Hey,it's been nice?
I really feel things are going to go well for you because you do have your head on straight....GO GET 'EM GIRL.

Mouse I got your email, I am so sorry about your job. But I really do believe that our self proclaimed harem master Bob, is right in what he says.
It is hard going out on you own but sometimes the benefits are far greater than when you were working for someone else, after all you are the one that makes all the difference, if there is a screw up it is your screw up, but if there is a pat on the back it is your pat on the back. I will not lie to you, it is not all a bed of roses working for yourself, but from personal experience I can say that we have achieved far more by working for ourselves than we ever would have if I had of just been working in an office somewhere, and Greg was doing his trade. Our jobs now are so totally different to what we trained for and we could not be happier............. Oh yes we have some rough times, like this year when the splitter was stolen and now we have had a really slow season so money may be a bit tight for a while, but you learn to roll with the punches and to survive and compensate.
Whatever you decide to do, we wish you every success.

Hubby won't get anything but his whole 12 hours of vacation he has banked and his small 401k that they'll tax the hell out of. So I guess you could say all he gets is a see ya!
The timing of all this just sucks so bad. If I were all healed up, or at least not in so much pain and we'd gotten a chance to get the bills caught up, it would have been much better. As it is, our bills are all pretty much a month behind right now. With all the stress I've had this year, right now I just can't even begin to think of where to start. That's why I let them sign me up for the seminar at the outplacement place right away. I can say one thing about Motorola, even though it really sucks to be laid off, they are trying to take care of us somewhat. I'm sure this outplacement service isn't cheap. Motorola spends good money on training and those types of things.
I'm sure I'll get it together somehow. The last time things got bad (when hubby & I were seperated and he was not really contributing to the bills), Mom said I went into survivor mode. She also said of the two of us, she thought I'd be the one better off because I do go into survivor mode and take care of things. But that's when I was healthy and what I did was go get a second job along with my full time+ job. I don't think I could handle that at this point in time unless I had some of KRS's nifty drugs.
I think I'll take the rest of this week to regroup, calm down and think about what's next. Maybe even come up with a, dare I say it, budget! I should get my butt into gear and work on some eBay listings too while I still have a digital camera (we may have to take it back now).

Sorry to hear about your troubles Mouse. I'm sure you'll make it through, though. At least you will still have some pay coming in, and your insurance. That should help a LOT. You'll be able to work something out - try not to worry too much about it, OK?

Mouse - sorry to hear about everything that's been going on... talk about rotten timing!
Honestly though - I think that this end up being a great opportunity for you. I don't know anything about this 'outplacement' company that you speak of but it sounds very positive from what you've mentioned here. At least all the months of uncertainty are over though right? (cold comfort I know... )

Thank you everyone for your words of encouragement, it means a lot to me. Everyone at the plant has known this is a possibility for months. I was fortunate to miss most of the hand-wringing because it started when I was out on leave. But you never really think it will happen to you, you know what I mean? When I realized what was going on, I cried like a blubbering baby. I even shocked myself, because that's not like me to lose it like that. I mean I couldn't even talk through the whole process, and it took like a half an hour. All I could think of was that as of tomorrow (today now) hubby will also be out of work.
My brother, who also worked for Motorola at a different plant, took the voluntary severance package a couple of months ago. Needless to say his package was much better because he had a choice. So after tomorrow, no one in my immediate family will have a job. Kinda of scary when you look at it like that.
My now former supervisor told me that he knew of several people who used the outplacement service and are already working again, some of them making even more than they did. His wife was laid off in on of the first go arounds and he's nervous about his own job, he's already looking for a new one. As he was walking me out he wondered aloud how much longer the plant would be open. I'd already been thinking that myself. My old plant, which was the oldest plant they had here, the one everyone knew, was sold off a couple of years ago. Plus this plant has had a couple of very large failures in the past few years that cost them a lot of money. So it could be they're looking to get out of that particular area. Motorola is made up of several different sectors that make different things. Here and there they get rid of ones that aren't making them money, or open new ones to get into a different area. So no, I don't think they'll quit making cell phones and pagers anytime soon.
Anyway, yes I believe things happen for a reason. I just knew what direction I'm supposed to go in now considering I'm still having so much back trouble. That worries me. We shall see, I'm sure the answer will appear before long. I just hope it does before we become homeless!
I'm off to bed now, it's been a trying day. I'll talk to you all tomorrow!

Mouse - If you are already running a month behind on the bills take a good hard look at your situation and consider a bankruptsy.
I filed in March of this year and it was a big weight off my shoulders. We had about 80K of debt we had been basically just paying the interest on and were never going to get out from under. It is there for a reason as a law. It is not good for anyone - you - the lenders or the government for people to get in a trapped situation. You actually are out of the economy in many ways.

Ok, I'll admit it, I'm still up...again.
Gravid, unfortunately we filed bankruptcy just a year and a half ago, so that's not an option. We don't even have any credit cards. The only things we have on loan anymore is the house and our one car.

Is anyone about???? Here I am again, not sleeping and totally wiped. We went out for BBQ dinner tonight, it was enjoyable, Babyback ribs with Texas Sauce (hot peppers in a tomato base with some blackstrap molasses) collard greens, fries and cornbread. And the MAN and I shared a humongous and delicious peach cobbler with ice cream and whipped cream...we even left some in the bowl, that's how big it was. I brought home a couple of ribs & fries (had to leave room for the cobbler)
Mouse with everything else that has happened how is Pogo doing with her meds? How are you holding up? This whole last year or more has been some kind of terrible test...for your entire family. There has to be some relief for you soon. Speaking of relief if hubby is out of work and your total income is diminished you might seek some financial assistance ie: food stamps, etc. don't be too proud, you have worked and put into the system if you need help you should be given it.
Netta about those thongs (the rubber ones) we call 'em thongs too, although many call them flip flops (because of the sound they make as you walk) I was having a punny time in that thread...you may have noticed.
Are you feeling better.. I certainly hope you are...this business is not good at all when it hangs on soo long.
Pharlap you little rascal, how are you we should plan on a party one of these days and have a joke fest!! Bitsandbobs is always good for a funny line or two!Our buddy Gravid always has a good story or two up his sleeve! I'll check back in a bit.

Hi Zilvy are you still around, I am not in for too long because I have a lot to do tonight.
We have had the electrician here today and he has only just left about 20 minutes ago. Good lord you think you are getting them in to do one job and it seems to grow into a million jobs. You see the love of my life decided that the wires that run between our house and the granny flat need to go underground. We have put the driveway in beside the granny flat and he thinks the electricity and phone wires need to go underground so that if the trucks are loaded high they will not hit the wire. Okay I know this makes perfect sense, but believe me I could live with the wires the way they were.
So anyway we had the very religious electrician here today, and heaven only knows how he could hear me, because I can barely hear my own voice at times, but he heard me swear, and I got lovely little looks from him all day. You know all I said was that something was a b!tch of a thing. Not too bad, I could have said a lot worse you know. LOL Well he is not finished and has to come back.........in about a weeks time, we have ditches dug everywhere and apparently wires mangled in our fuse box and he wants to leave it until next week. God I will be glad when my darling husband has everything the way he wants it and we can get back to normal.
At present the yard looks like I don't know what, we have no trees and no grass, a lot of dirt and when it is windy we have a lot of dust to choke on. At least when the wiring is finished we should be able to concrete the drive past the house and down the back, that will stop the dust, and then we can also get some plants in the ground so it does not look so bare all the time.
So how was everyone else's day.
I forgot to say that I am on the mend, thanks for asking Zilvy, I still have some days that I cough a lot, but it is that time of the year and I guess I just got hit really hard this year. I am a believer that stress makes you more open to illness, and I think that we have had a lot of stress this year, so that is part of the reason I got this so bad.

nettak - go buy some calcium chloride - It draws moisture out of the air and if you sprinkle it liberally around the area that is bare dusty dirt it will attract enough moisture to make it less dusty when the wind blows or the tires stir it up.
I went to storage locker auctions yesterday and got nothing. There was one that someone had turned into a little work shop and I would have gladly paid a thousand for it but I only took $400 cash. It ended up going for $680. There was a woodworker's bench with vise and saw and a peg board behind with every hand tool you could imaigiine. A big roll along tool box with a smaller one on top and a reloading set up on one corner of the bench. There were two gun cases hanging with who knows what in them. Under the bench were carry cases for saws and drills and thins Porter-Cable and Milwaukee. What a haul and I missed it.
I am looking at cheap cars and it is discouraging. You can't buy much of anything for $2000 that does not look like it belongs behind a tow truck.

Hello all - I'm new to AW message boards and I'm already hooked. I've left a few scattered comments in a couple of categories and have read through many threads with my stalking-cloak on. (btw, I loved the little animation "lurker" that Tigerlady posted on previous page). I sure have enjoyed reading your thoughts. I'm warmed by the sincere caring and respect you show to each other. I'm delighted by the intelligent and witty banter.
I've been noticing this thread being bumped to the top several times over the last few days, but just peeked in today. After scanning a few comments, I decided that this must be some sort of open comment forum? What does WSUTL stand for? And do you think that diving in during current conversations is an intrusion? I'm a message board virgin, and I don't want to start off stepping on any toes (I think I may have already rubbed one poster the wrong way in another thread).
As for my auction tie-in, I have only been a buyer but am gearing up to sell. This will be a very small-scale endeavor, but I'm looking forward to it. I just got my Mavica73 and I'm ready to dumpster-dive. I'm learning so much from all of you. Thank you for being here

Hello and welcome to and25cents. You are welcome to pop in and post any old time you feel like it, and yes we do kind of act like an open forum. It is just that this thread has been going for a long time, this is part 4 and after all this time we have formed some real friendships with each other.
This is a caring group of people, and you will find that even those who do not post in here on a regular basis will come in and offer support when it is needed. You could not have found a better place to start posting. We are all very nice people.
Don't worry about rubbing anyone up the wrong way, we all do that at some time or other. The only ones' you have to worry about upsetting are the mods', they are the ones'with the rule book.
I think I will have to give you your nick name, so what will it be, 25 or cents. I like cents, so if you don't mind that is what I will call you.
Our mate Bob says to say hello to everyone, he was not able to get in last night and today he will have the 'tekkies' out to upgrade his computer.
Zilvy I think you are right and the religious electrician and my husband have joined forces to form a conspiracy to keep me quiet.

Hi 25¢ - This is one of those nice threads but some that get in to serious matters like
religion / politics or handling charges can get pretty ugly.
It is better most of the time if you keep your identify here separate from your eBay,
etc., ID. Some of us never rub anyone the wrong way but some have had strangers
show up at their door or interference with their auctions and I had a Secret Service
agent asking my wife questions at work after I offended some ultra law abiding
citizen here and I suspect those were related events.
I am putting some things on auction tomorrow for a Native of the North Island in New
Zealand which I understand is very similar to being an Australian without penal
ancestors and
much larger, fiercer natives. He seems very nice once we get past the language
problems and he is wanting to sell antiquities for $10,000 at a crack so I am not
offended that he is disappointed I don't read calligraphic medieval German. He has the
neatest vellum land deed from George the First of England that makes you realize that
lawyers have ALWAYS been as crooked as they are today.
That's OK - just so mine is crooked FOR ME.
Mouse - So sorry you can't file - 5 more years right? How about since you are both
jobless doing a disappearing act? I very much recommend a trip to the Proventilles,
Turks and Cacaos Islands where there is no income tax at all, financial matters are
handled with discretion and identity is less of a concern. You can come back via a
couple island hops as anyone you please if you are skilled with a photorealistic printer
and a lamination machine.
It was hot today but I went to a sale anyway because it is unusual to see one on a Wen. in the paper. They made a big fuss of only wanting to sell to dealers so I took my sales tax ID. They still did like it that I did not have a business card on me. I told him I would run home and rip one through the printer if he wanted because I have plenty of card stock, but it was no wonder they were going out of business if they hunt for reasons not to sell to people. Think I touched a nerve.
Anyway these two brilliant brothers obviously depended totally on the hired help to know what they were doing because they sold me two tanks of Freon one of 12 and one of 22 for $10.00 total. I should get somewhere between $600 and $700 OK.

Ok, so I was a good girl last night and went to bed early. Ok, I admit it, it was because I'd been up for a day and a half again. It seem my insomnia is worse than ever...Gee, I wonder why?
First I want to welcome 25cents to our unique thread! This series of threads (we're on part 4 now, as you can see ) started late one night when our buddy Rocker asked who stays up the latest? See, she's a nightowl like I am and felt like she was wandering the halls of AW all alone. Then our Aussie pals and a few of us 'Merican (hi Zilvy!) nightowls joined in. Does anyone remember when this all started?? My brain is a bit fuzzy ya know...
Anyway, this is the thread that a lot of people on AW love to hate. It's about a bunch of nothing in particular, but a lot of different things. And yes, quite a few of us have formed some lasting friendships from this thread. Some of us post pretty much daily, and others pop in less often. But the door is always open as long for everyone as people don't get mean with each other. (Right gang? ) I hope we've answered your questions, but please feel free to ask more!
Ok, before I go off to bed (even though I had a nice nap this afternoon, LOL), I'll try and get in some answers I'm sure you're all dying to know, LOL!
Zilvy, Pogo is doing very well. She's perking back up and bouncing around (hence her name ) again. She's back on my lap nightly and playing with the others again. Now that I look back, I'm amazed I didn't notice how droopy she'd gotten! Shame on me. I guess i just figured she was getting to that adult stage when they start getting more independent? But even the vet called yesterday to ask how she was doing. I thought that was very nice. Oh, and did I tell you guys we think KD managed to get pregnant on her little jaunt a couple weeks ago? She's starting to pooch out already. I'll be sure to share pictures of the babies!
As far as me holding up, I dunno yet. I'm still in shock I think. This is such a traumatic event to have happened on top of everything else this past year or so. I can say my back is acting up something fierce, imagine that! I have an appointment with my doctor Friday and I will put him on the spot about controlling my pain. I plan to tell him I'm now unemployed and I very well can't go get a new job when I'm in this much pain all the time, what are you going to do about it?! And as far as him thinking me hating my job was the reason, what does he think now that I no longer have and the pain is as worse as ever??
I do plan on looking into unemployment right away. I'll look into the rest as needed. With luck, either hubby's company will take off soon and/or I'll get another job right away through the outplacement service. I do have the severance check coming soon, so this month should be ok if we budget well, and maybe next month as well.
Netta, I hope you get your place beck into order soon. I know it would drive me nuts to have everything in shambles like that! It sounds like hubby has some good reasoning behind what he's doing, it just takes time. Oh, and you might want to wear a pentagram the next time the electrician shows up.
Gravid, don't you just hate it when you have to pass up a good thing? I feel for you. Thanks for the tip on the islands (How do you know so much about so many things?? ). But unfortunately I don't think lugging my mom, 7 cats (one possible pregnant) and a dog around is very practical. Really, the only debts we have is pretty much the one car, the house (our mortgage payment is pretty small), one student loan (hubby's) and utilities. So filing bankruptcy wouldn't do much good anyway except for the car and house, but we need those! As long as we're both not out of a job for too long we should be ok. Unfortunately Mom has put her cvar buying plan on hold until we get this mess straightened out as she may need to lend us some more money to get us through this crap. She made that decision on her own.
So like I said, this week I'm just going to take it easy, go to my 4 doctor appointments over the next 2 days, and start anew next week with that seminar. I have a good feeling about something good coming out of using the outplacement service. I just hope my health holds up and doesn't do me in at a time I need to be my strongest!
I'm gonna run for now. If for some reason I'm still up in a bit, I'll pop back in.

Well gang you will never guess what happened today.......the electrician came back, as a matter fact he is still out there working and it is now 6:40pm, and the best part is that I heard him say a word that sounded very much like "FRIG", now I don't know about over in America but over here that is a swear word that has much the same meaning as the other "F" word. So big do do to him, he is not so perfect after all. LOL I have to tell you it made my day when I heard him say it too.
I have had half the day without phones and the other half without power, so it has been a wonderful day all the way around. I hoping that all the work will be finished tonight, but my husband tells me not to hold my breath waiting......., they want to rewire the pool filter and timer next, I just want them to leave it alone, I can live with it like it is.....the auto timer stopped working a long time ago and I have survived with it the way it is since then, it just means that I have to manually go and turn the filter on instead of it coming on at set times.
I am going to bake tonight so does anyone have any requests. I am making chocolate slice, coffee slice and a orange poppy seed cake with cream cheese topping. I made soup today and it was an effort because I had it half cooked and the power was cut off so I took it and sat it on the combustion wood heater, I am lucky because my heater has a cook top on it so at least I could finish cooking it. It is almost weekend and the teenagers will be here again so I have to have food to feed them with and they sure can eat let me tell you.
I will check back a bit later to see if anyone is in. Talk to you all later.
...and a special hello to 25cents! Welcome to the nuthouse
Nettak - I'm glad to hear that your sparky isn't such a saint after all... You should have let him know somehow that you heard what he said. Would love to have seen the look on his face And you had to mention orange poppyseed cake didn't you - my favourite! Even better than chocolate mud (if that's possible! )
Mouse - So your little one is preggers huh? Can't wait for the pics! Will you keep any?

Hello Pharlap, it is good to see you. What have you been up to.
I was going to make a mud cake, but I thought that might be too much chocolate overload even for me. LOL I might make one yet I will see. I have to go and check the oven in a minute, but I will be back later.
I did not let on to the electrician that I had heard what he said, because I did not want to upset him. You see at the time I had no phones and he had already told me he was going to cut the power, so I thought it was wise to keep my mouth shut at that stage of the game.
I will be back in soon, I really do have to check the oven.

Hi Pharlap! Wellllll, we already have 6 cats. But I did say if she has one that looks like her I might have to keep it. Especially if it has her sweet disposition, we call KD our little angel. We shall see. We're still not sure she is preggers, too soon to tell. But we really think she is.
Hey Netta, I'll have a yellow cake with chocolate frosting please.
I have to go package up a couple items for the mail tomorrow and then hit the hay. I have an appoinment clear on the other side of town tomorrow. See you all tomorrow!

I won't be on much tonight as I have a load of programs to install on the new drive.
nettak, That coffee slice sounds good gravid, I had some dealings with a Kiwi lawyer some years ago. Your description of your guy makes me think I know him. If I'm right his initials are P.K. and he's a chap who'll be in his sixties now. He's heavily involved with the N.Z. art scene.
If it is him it will be in your interest to email me.
