nettak - It sounds like you dump the wood in a pile there. Here if you order a tractor trailer full of wood they deliver it in long pieces and set it off with a big hydrailic claw that allows them to turn it and stack it real neat.
You have to cut it in 2 foot lengths or whatever you want before you split it.
I have a friend that is so cheap he gets the wooden pallets businesses throw away and uses them for fire wood.
Here is the Green Monster (Chrysler LHS)that replaced the Black Honda I totalled last week.

Thanks for your reply nettak. Very interesting!
We are growing a small amount of timber (planted about 3000 trees) and have thought of getting in the Christmas tree business as a side item. I understand that can be very profitable. We don't have enough clear land to make it a main line business. Glad that you remind me to order my trees, it's about that time.

Gravid love the car, very nice indeed.
We specialize in a certain type of timber, and we are very fussy about what we sell, so for us we would not even look at anything like pellets. A lot of the pellets have been painted or treated in some way and that can seriously poison you and the air. The type of timber that we deal in emits very little smoke (unlike a lot of the crappy wood around), and is a hot very slow burning timber. When the wood is delivered into the depot it is bought in on Semi Trailers usually about 27 to 30 tons at a time and yes it is tipped out and we move the splitting machine around the pile to split it, that is why we must have a portable splitter.
When we deliver it out to our customers it goes out on smaller trucks that are divided into bays that will hold around a ton and that is how most of our domestic clients buy there wood. We very rarely stack it for them, it normally gets tipped off and they stack it themselves. The only ones that we do normally stack the wood for are the elderly and disabled. If we were to stack for every client it would take far too much time and cut into our delivery time and make us much less profit. Gotta keep any eye on the profit you know. For every tree that is taken out over here, at least 4 are planted in its place, and we only deal in timber that has been dead for at least 20 - 25 years.
We have exported firewood to Japan and Sweden would you believe. I have to admit that each time we send wood to Japan I always say "NO MORE!!", because they always have such rigid stipulations to go with the order, but somehow we always send more when they want it. I guess you go with the money.
Oh jt I love the idea of Christmas Trees, I am the biggest kid come Christmas time......it is my favourite time of year and I can't wait to put the tree up and the decorations out.

I was told about a fellow who imports things from South America and they specified that the crates they recieved their products in by sea be made of cocabolo or several other woods that are dirt cheap there and expensive here. They are making almost as much dismantling the crates and selling the wood as they are from the original business.
People are picky here also about the kind of wood. Oak, maple, hickory, fruit woods are all slow burning with little resin and a fine ash. Pines, birch, cedar all gum up the flue and burn off quick with less heat. I don't think anyone can afford to burn Walnut. There are actually walnut rustlers who steal the trees in the night that are worth $10k to $15k for veneer and lumber. We have some huge straight walnuts on our main road, 3 foot through, and they make such a mess when the nuts drop and get smashed by the cars. If you get it on your carpet it is a real permenant dye. But they are in too public a place to steal - which makes me happy as they are pretty.
It has become a trendy thing for some of the restaurants to have wood fired ovens for their trade. That should be a nice account!
Edited to add - I just figured out you thought I said pellets - I have seen those. Also there is a company that sells furnaces to farmers that burn corn - or you would say maize. But I was talking about pallets - the flat wood platforms they ship things on so that fork lifts can scoop them up easy and move them. There are thousands of them thrown away locally and they are given away free all over. My friend chops them up with a chain saw and burns them. His ashes are full of staples and nails!

Oops Sorry Gravid, that was my mistake I did mean to say pallets....yes the wooden ones, I would not touch them for burning they really can be dangerous if they are painted or treated in anyway, so your friend could be taking a big risk. Most of them are treated in some way or other, well at least over here they are anyway.
The timbers that will gum up your flue are usually green timbers, and again that can be a very dangerous thing to do. If you do happen to get enough of a fire going with whatever timber you are using and a spark or two goes up the chimney it can cause a flue fire and before you would even know what was happening your roof is on fire and hey presto you lose your house. I warn people about these things everyday in my business because this is a subject that I do know a lot about.
Most of the timbers you mentioned would be used as furniture timbers over here and well priced furntiure timber at that. You would get much more for a slab of pine or cedar then you would if it was cut and split to burn, and it would burn far to fast anyway.
We also have restaurants that have wood fired ovens and we deliver to them all year round. It has it's good and bad points. I always tell myself that they are good accounts to have......and sometimes I believe myself. LOL

Well right now I am building a $tock of those ugly $ilver fake tree$ until the $eason to be jolly. Ick. To each his own. Love your tree Bob.
Wood dead for 20 years! LOL In this 95% humidity it's rotten to dirt in a year.
On the other hand, trees we planted 4 years ago are 20 feet tall.
Do you aussies sell more on ebay to your own continent? Or do you ship more to the US?
I am always thinking of your "indirect kin" to our Southern state of Georgia. Do you ever think of that? or is that thought highly offensive? (Not knowing the "politically correct" in this case.)

Hi jt, I don't even bother listing on eBay Australia.
80% of my stuff goes to the States, 10% to Europe and no more than 10% to Australia.
Getting paid for the 10% to Australia gives me more hassles than the other 90%!!!
There was a time a while back that I seriously considered notating my auctions "WILL NOT SHIP TO AUSTRALIA".

Forgot to add for jt, this is not ordinary timber we are talking about, and yes if it was gum or stringbark ect., it would be rotted out in a short time frame as well. But this is Seasoned Ironbark and it is one of the hardest timbers you are going to find in my part of the world anyway. I also live in a very hot and high in humidity area and beleive me it would take more than a bit of humidity to rot it away. God if that was the case I would be bankrupted in a very fast time. When I say these trees have to be dead for at least 20 years that is what I mean, and usually they are still standing out in the paddock (field) as well. I will post some pictures when I find the photo album, so that you can see what I am talking about.

Hello everyone. What are you all up to tonight?
Now I know some of you will already have seen this, but I thought for those that haven't I would put the link so that everyone can have a good laugh. Now be warned some delicate individuals may be offended, but I don't think any of you lot will be upset. LOL http://www.auctionwatch.com/mesg/read.html?num=2&thread=408551
Gravid that is the bundy bear, he is on all the labels for Bundaberg Rum, and he is the coolest bear around, or at least that is what the advertising gurus' tell us.
Hi Zilvy, all is well in my neck of the woods, and yes my voice is back....it is still croaky but I really don't care because I can now talk again. That is most important because I was going crazy not being able to speak. I simply love to talk.
Our holy electrician still has a few things to do, but he has not been back yet to finish the jobs off. We still have to have the new pool timer wired up and I think he has to put in some new wiring in hubbies shed down the back. To be honest I am in no hurry to see him back, and I can live without the pool timer.
Greg has run new water lines down the back, so we now have 4 new taps positioned around the gardens so that we will not have to change the hose over to water the plants ect. Now that does make me happy.

That is funny - but here where they make so many cars there is great competition to get advance knowledge of the new models and people have been bribed with thousands of dollars to take inside photos. One fellow sold a photo for thousands of a car to be released in a couple years to a magazine and the company did a reverse computer enhancement of his imaige in the window reflection that was good enough to ID him and fired him.
