I remember when we used to smile at the "old folks" talking about the "good ol' days."

Yipes...I remember almost all of this stuff.

jacko, the YooHoo rumor was that someone had found a dead rat in a bottle of YooHoo. I'll never know if it was true, but I can't drink anything out of a can unless I pour it in a glass first, and nothing out of a bottle unless it's clear. Talk about childhood trauma.

The good old days weren't always good, but some stuff was fun. These too are the good old days we'll remember in the future. I love being in my forties, and I know I'll remember this decade as one of self-knowledge, discovery, and adventure.

Jumpin' ~

Feesh In A Poke is fish in a bag

Uncle Duck was cool - in a very special way. A simple man happy with the simplest pleasures in life ... smoking cigars and eating frog's legs. Oh, and a beat up pick up truck. This is a man who leaves a mark on your heart - just by being himself. Can you imagine him telling me how to catch frogs and cook the legs? YUK!

Of course, there is lots more to this story - one that is worthy of a thread. But I will wait until after the funeral home tonite. If I do not post it, that's because I got arrested

Perhaps it is time for Jerry Springer ...

I remember when ...

Turning eighteen meant that you'd get shipped off to Viet-nam to die!

Cocaine was only used by some "weird-os" and Hollywood producers.

Computers were huge and took up a room and everytime the ship got hit, the millions of blinking lights on the computer would spark and flash and cause a fire that the crew had to put out!

Friday nights at 7:00pm on NBC was a special time for us, because Star Trek was on TV and ever episode was brand-new!

Only if the "bingo ball" with your birthday on it was one of the first 200 to pop out of the machine. If your's was #349, you were safe.

True. Other "wonderful" memories of those bygone days are the Colored-only drinking fountains and segregation of the schools and the whole fantasy that Whites were the only Americans in America. Funny how the interviening years tends to filter out the negative things like that, but keeps the rose-colored glasses firmly in place. I personally think that we are much better off today as a society as a whole than we were then.

I remember when Parents told their kids what to do,not the kids tell the Parents what to do.
I remember prayer in school before all events, and in homeroom.
I remember when kids got whipped with a plank in school and the parents didn't sue.
I remember when candy bars were a nickel and all sodas were in deposit bottles. All cans were tin. When poptop cans came out cut myself every time I opened one.
I remember the first time I saw the Beatles,I wondered what that was that looked so strange.
I remember in junior high, the teacher measuring your dress and if it was too short you were sent home.
I remember postage being 3 cents,and buying postcards 3 for a dime.

I can remember a teacher breaking a kid's arm over the back of a chair. I'm glad parents sued.

Even before prayer in school stopped, I'm glad I lived in an area that was diverse enough that the PTB felt a moment of silence was better.

Spare the rod, spoil the child? Uh huh - that's why almost every violent criminal in lock-up was beaten by their parents or caregivers.

I remember helping my little black friends pick peppers on my Grandfathers farm so that they could make enough money to eat that night.

I remember that my black friend was not allowed in the movies.

I remember that my black friend was not allowed in the skating rink.

I remember that my black friend could not buy a coke at the drug store fountain.

I remember that the department store Santa Clause would not allow a black child to sit on his lap.

edited to add just one other memory.

I'm sorry that you don't like my memories.
I thought that they would be interesting from a historical standpoint. You could just skip over them but I will try another thread.

Variety is the spice of life.

The memories that I posted can be seen as a contrasting view that makes today seem so much better...a positive view of our progress.

JumpinJacko:

Hungarian Pot was a popular meal we cooked in a huge pot and cast iron skillet when we went camping.

It consisted of browned ground chuck, onions, canned corn, pork and beans, tomatoe paste, water, pinch of sugar, black pepper and paprika. You mixed it all together and simmered it in a pot, like a stew.
For hungry campers, it was pretty good.

Oh, Helen -- Hepburn's right! Let's just you and I go put on our rose-colored glasses and sit back and pretend that all the awfull things of the past never existed and wish for the Good Ol' Days to come back and then we can live like conservatives for at least a little while!

BTW, while you're barefoot in the kitchen, fetch me my beer, woman!

How was that?

I remember when my family moved to a new house.

I remember the first time, getting on the bus to go to our new school and seeing that my two brothers, my sister and I were the only ones of our color on the bus.

I remember trying to find a seat on that bus, but all of the seats had at least one person in it and no one would move so we could sit. The bus driver did nothing, so we stood all the way to school.

I remember a group of children taking my little brother's glasses off his face and breaking them in half. The bus driver did nothing.

I remember getting off that bus at our bus stop after about 2 weeks and seeing my father and our next door neighbor standing at the bus stop with baseball bats. Every other kid on that bus got off at our stop, too. Apparently, there was a plan to beat us all up, but my father found out about it and was waiting. He had called the police, but they refused to come. I don't know why. Neither the bus driver, nor the school, would do anything about it.

I remember having to take a taxi to school every day after that, clear across town even though there was a school 6 blocks down the street.

I remember finally moving out of that house, and away from that school.

By the way, we were white, and the other children on the bus were black.
