Kudos to the AuctionWatch crew for the article regarding Kevin Mitnick memorabilia.
http://www.auctionwatch.com/awdaily/dailynews/november00/1-112700.html
I've said this before... whether you think that Mitnick is a criminal or hero is irrelevant. The fact that Yahoo and Amazon have said that his memorabilia did not fit their "community standards" when at the same time they have sellers listing Nazi memorabilia is absurd. An authentic WWII helmet or uniform is one thing. Those items are part of history, but what about the sellers that list Nazi t-shirts or new books. Those items fit the "community standards"?
I believe that their "standards" need to be re-thought.

Congrats on the publicity, DutchBid. Hopefully the wires will pick up the story. Of course, now you're gonna have a bunch of hackers coming to your site

Denephew, thanks. Most of the gems that you saw are from the same company. They are the largest online dealer of gems in the world.
Wabmester, I hope not!
Mzkittie, emailed you.

Wabmester,
Half of your post came true. Some wires did pick up on the story. I'm sure we've got the hackers visiting too, but they seem to be just friendly visitors, which is ok! No, that wasn't a dare either!
Next week's USNews will be doing an article similar to AuctionWatch's as well.
Good things happen to good people... so we are all trying to be good here!
Hope to see you at the site!
Happy Holidays

Hey, DutchBid.
I think you're onto something here. Outlaw Auctions -- the stuff other sites are afraid to touch.
Hmm, given the recent court ruling that sites like eBay are immune when their users sell illegal stuff, it might be interesting to push the envelope a bit. I wonder if BlackMarket.com is already taken....

No, I don't think that we want to go that direction.
The Kevin Mitnick card was about principle. Why wouldn't we allow it? There is nothing ilegal about it at all. The fact that yahoo and amazon said that it was not up to their standards, but their hitler items were, really ticked me off, so we offered to hold the auction for Mitnick.
Of course the publicity was nice for us and all of our sellers, but we had no idea that we would get that when the auction started.
HOWEVER, like I read on another thread, a little "creative marketing" can do wonders. I am certainly not against hosting auctions that gain media attention.

OK, suit yourself. If your message to the world is simply that Mitnick wasn't as bad as Hitler, I think the story will end up someplace like page B-12.
However, if you spin this as something like "let the community determine their own standards", then you've got yourself a raison d'etre, d00d.
Gee, somebody has even registered TastelessAuctions.com. I'm obviously not the first to come up with this biz plan

wabmester I do believe you are onto something here.
Dutchbid, has the sites traffic increased since the auction was posted and if so how much?
I've always wanted to find an auction site that would allow me to auction breedings to my stud horse. I think it is a very untapped market as far as auctions go, but no one wants to touch it because of the animal rights activists. If someone was to allow such auctions on a site, they would get tons of free publicity with write ups by various national horse organizations. As a member of a few ot the horsey type orgs I get membership magazines that highlight cool places on the web. The membership base of these orgs is HUGE.

Denephew,
Why would the activists object to offering stud services from a stud horse? Seems that without stud horses you wouldn't have many baby horses. Are you talking about the anti-horse activists?
By the way, AuctionWatch's article spawned more press today... DutchBid is on the front page of theregister.co.uk , which is a very popular Internet industry site.

Dutchbid~~I am not sure what the problem is. I do know none of the other auction sites will allow that type of auction. Stud fees can be quite pricey~~in the thousands. The folks spending that kind of money are not going to abuse their investment. It is also an item that is shippable. We ship all over the US during breeding season.

Dutchbid~~I am still curious as to the increase of traffic to the site since the inception of this auction. I am wondering if unique auctions like these, on smaller auction venues, show a marked increase in traffic or not.

Denephew,
As of today, stories have shown up on NewsBytes, HackerNews, CNET, ZDNET, TheRegister, and all the others that syndicate these publications. So, to answer your question... yes, we have seen a significant increase in traffic over the last 48 hours.

Thanks for the info Dutchbid. I always felt unique auctions would increase a smaller sites traffic and have often wondered why that marketing strategy is not more widely used. Best of luck~~Denise

Just an update...
We have spent most of the day on the phone with reporters. CNET and ZDNET were a just a couple from earlier today. Tonight at midnight we got a call from the AP-Newswire.
All this spawned from Michelle Dennehy's article right here on AuctionWatch! Guess AuctionWatch.com really does have a large audience!

I liked your site...using real money, and not pretend money was a real treat...we will be listing soon.

Congrats on the PR dutchie!
I wish your site well.
You contribute some substance here at AW, unlike other auction site owners who use multiple IDs here to plaster the boards with their falonious and fraudulant spam for their sites.
At least you are not sucked in by the Politically Correct crap that the larger sites subscribe to.
If only people would take this oportunity of your PR to list some auctions at your site, you may be able to get a good customer base from the curiosity seekers.
And no, I do not know dutchbid, and I have no stake in praising him.
I just root for the underdogs when they deserve it, and this time, he deserves it.
BTW: Kevin is a nice guy, and a real genious.

I strongly suggest that you NOT use LowestBids.com, as their owner has just been proven to be dishonest, as he was caught in a lie and then tried to edit it out.
If he will lie openly here on AW, what will he do with YOUR personal information?

I am a bit confused. I thought this thread was about Dutchbid.
So far what little dealing I have had with DUTCHBID has been 100% on the up and up, and we plan (and many people we know) to start listing there after the holiday's.
I only know that I heard about the other being not honest, and that the "want to be" other Bay deleting posts they don't like, running illegal contests etc. etc..

To all that it matters to
It is obvious that pocono fears LowestBids.com He/she is so blatently obvious. In clarifying I spoke with Eric Rosenberg of Dutchbid yesterday and we had a good conversation.I am sure pocohontus has never made a error on its post. Anyway being that you have chosen to slander LowestBids in this thread. Our numbers for today. 265,000 visitors since 9am.
Before you write your typical hahahah, I do not care what you think. Besides the more you talk about us, the more people will check us out. If this sounds personal, remember it was you who brought this up. Also I like your (no wonder why nothing sells on ebay) comment in the ebay chatroom.
Keep up the good writing. It seems to be what your good at.

big difference...
I am giving my input on an Auction site, which is what these boards are for.
Albeit, an amature, poorly run, tiny little nothing of an auction site, but a "self-proclaimed" auction site non the less.
I downloaded your bidbar, and it crashed my computer. Your site is not to be taken seriously. Anyone who uses it is taking a giant leap backwards from all of the GREAT auction sites out there.
BTW: It's Tuesday, and I didn't see all of those mega power sellers that you said would be flocking to post on your site today.
WHAT HAPPENED LBCEO/LIVEAUCTIONGUY/KLM/etc. ?

Define great.
Great as in I have so much time to spend here because I can't sell anything anywhere.
Or great as in
I have nothing better to do.
In closing
NOBODY SHOULD TAKE SERIOUSLY YOUR 2 CENTS BECAUSE YOU ARE IN A LOT OF CHAT ROOMS AND THREADS COMPLAINING ABOUT THOSE SITES ALSO.
This is America so say what you want.
But I think your just very unhappy.
Try to have a better day.
See ya
