I agree with Zoomin's post, there are so many "what if"s and yes it could have been even worse, too.
I didn't take EG's post as an insult - the way I interpreted it was sort of "What if this affected our livlihood, what would we do?" And this is a very real question. The attack DID affect my livlihood for three solid weeks, and I have only just gotten back to work. Prior to Sept 11th, under "normal" circumstances, if I were as low on money and as behind on my rent as I am right now, I know I would've been stressed out of my mind!! But to tell you the truth, it does seem trivial to me now, having survived this attack and having seen the people all over NYC who lost their families. Ya know some people STILL have their "missing" flyers posted up, still waiting and hoping for the safe return of someone. This is absolutely HEARTBREAKING to see all over the city. I think I was initially so grateful to be alive, and that my friends who were down at the WTC site are still alive, that gratitude took over and nothing else mattered. It sure did put things into perspective. Now it's a month later, the money thing is a drag, but it's not that important, I feel surprisingly laid back about it, like "Well, this will all work out somehow", and it just doesn't feel as bad to me now as it would've, say, on Sept 10th. If anyone had told me last month "You will be out of work for 3 weeks", I would've flipped. I would've thought too, "WHAT THE HELL AM I GONNA DO?" But this month I'm just thinking "Holy sh*t! That was scary, thank god I'm still alive, thank god my family and friends are all alive and well." Rocker
Putting aside the controversy you inadvertently started - such a surprise for these boards! I think you ask an interesting question.
It's often tempting or necessary to put all of one's eggs in one basket. One of the great things about buying and selling for a living is that you don't have to do that. Months ago, there was a poster on the eBay board telling people to diversify. It takes awhile for me to get it sometimes, but that's what I did.
There are a couple of posts on the eBay board this morning about eBay merging in half.com. It looks like they may be going to a fixed price format. Maybe if the PTB at Yahoo play it right, they can pick up the folks who like selling and buying with the auction format. They certainly have the name recognition.
So, in my home, we're already sort of saying goodbye to eBay. It's third on my list of where to sell, and my partner has been doing more work outside the home. I will also, if that becomes necessary. But right now, I'd rather concentrate on the shop and Amazon, and just leave eBay (or Yahoo if things go that way) for things that aren't appropriate for either of those.
