When I was still a rather precocious young man, I already realized most vividly the futility of the hopes and aspirations that most men pursue throughout their lives.

Well-being and happiness never appeared to me as an absolute aim. I am even inclined to compare such moral aims to the ambitions of a pig. Albert Einstein

Hi Helen

Great thread topic Antiquary.

I don't have a particular favorite quote but here's a few interesting ones from Nietzsche.

"Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And when you look long into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you."

And perhaps even more interesting...

The abdomen is the reason why man does not easily take himself for a god.

LOL Helen, yes sometimes that is hard... it's a wise policy though. Your mother was quite smart.

I aspire to many goals that I don't always quite reach. I make a mighty effort though.

I thought you might like that quote of Nietzsche's about the abyss... it seemed to fit quite well with your comment about Ashcroft. Do you think he's looked into the abyss one too many times?

Hi Rawbunz! good to see you.

Do I detect a note of cynicism in Samuel Johnson's quote?

Perhaps just a bit.

How are you today Enchanted? Making lots of sales these days?

Oops! That felt an awful lot like derailing this thread!

thinking... mustn't derail, mustn't derail...

Well, I'm quite cynical about my sales. That fits with the theme of this thread, right?

Helen, that is a inspiring quote "Grace under pressure." Those words have helped me to get through a lot in my life too. I admire those who have the maturity to have grace under pressure.

Hi Helen. I think you do rather well at whatever it is you are doing.

Oh, Enchanted, I believe I am just feeling plain cynical tonight. Fitting, eh?

Tonight, "Grace under pressure" makes me think that she could suddenly explode. Grace that is. Messy. I'd hate to clean up.

Antiquary, I meant to ask you in what way were you a precocious young man? Would we be shocked?? I hope.

Rawbunz, I'm beginning to see a pattern in those quotes.

I must now admit that when I first read Antiquary's first post to this thread, I thought he was talking about himself, I thought ... what a revelation and personal disclosure. Then I realized he was quoting Einstein but it was still slightly unsettling.

Well thank you for that visual of Grace Rawbunzel!

I think we're all suffering from a slight level of cynicism and anomie tonight.

I might just have to counterbalance it with an inspirational quote thread tomorrow, hmmm?

Hi everybody!

Yes, Einstien said that not I. And it's not really a favorite quote, but interesting.

Oh, I think all the thread police have left the building, Robin, so you're safe.

It's good to see you all out.
