I see the point though. Toollady assumes that you have to have millions of dollars to open an auction site. Auctioncow is stupid, they should have spend thousands if not hundreds of thousands on software to run their FREE message boards. Then they should spend millions advertising it.[/i]

No, toollady doesn't assume any such thing.

As the saying goes, You only have one chance to make a first impression.

My first impression of auctioncow is this, they have little or no start up funds to get this off the ground.

Will it work and am I wrong? To quote the divine bovine "Only time will tell".

Who cares if they have little or not startup funds or if they have millions? I am not investing in them, except for when they get started I might spend a couple of hours posting some auctions and waiting and see.

How many of us have already done that with bidville, SYI, Carnaby, and the SLEW of other sites? Heck we must not have much better things to do cause post on AW!

I hope they don't have millions, I would LOVE to see a small site, even one that is already in place such as Carnaby kick ebay's butt.

Headlines: Small site gain market share against a giant.

I for one am going to give Auctioncow my best wishes and sure hope everything goes well for them. I'm always in the market for another auction site.

If these folks have come up with some good plans and are willing to stick with them then they may be worth our time.

From what I've seen it's usually when someone gets too big for their britches that auction sites start having trouble pleasing the users. As long as Auctioncow keeps a good perspective on things they just might be all right.

toollady, I apologise. I went through the threads and it was bearmom that scolded the bashers with this remark How can anyone become so obsessed with hating something as inanimate as an auction site? Makes you wonder what their real life is like

I just feel we all
have been burned so many times we are on the defensive. Auctioncow is on my list of sites to give a try.we need to be fair & encourage good people.we need a successful site so badly as an alternative.Auctioncows being here answering questions in advance as much as possible shows good business sense.Let's all wish them luck,if they succeed we do too.
I am very interested & appreciate this discussion.Let's try to be optimistic. If were we the ones trying to do something new we would appreciate a little support
good luck to us all

I agree, Time. We all have been burned before with promises that just could not be kept.

One thing different, and YEA, it is just words, but at least auctioncow doesn't make promises. I never understood promises anyway in business. Business is business, and the business of business is to make money not promises. (follow that?)

There are a couple of sites I am keeping my eye on, BUT if you read my posts elsewhere here at AW I have been recently SHOCKED at the sheer number of all the sites.

I just hope this cow can stand up in the torrent river of the auction sites.

You are right! business is business, i have learned that..i am not here for a social time i am here to make money.no matter how nicey nice a site is, if i make nothing in a couple of months i have to get tough...
I like what i see with this cow thingy..i respect the fact he would take the time in advance to come over here...smart business..i have one request..get some meta tags on your site & get em in the search engines right now..can you believe some sites don't take care of basics? you can do this free at bravenet..
& your point is well taken & the exact reason i mentioned this..many many sites out there..if we could just unite & get behind just one it would do well..
I feel owners should have one friend that will actually tell them when they start getting arrogant..LOL also i cannot believe the terrible job some sites do on not having it easy for the new person & people new to computers get around the site..auctioncow..get a neighbor or friend that has never been to an auction site fairly new at computers..have them test drive your links to bidding registering, explaining reserves feedback etc..
keep it simple..you will be miles ahead of many sites if you do this..& it costs nothing to make it fun & easy..also easy for new sellers..
i knew a cow once, lived over my back fence..cows are pretty darn tough..
good luck, remember stay nice even when you get success ...LOL

If it looks like a good place to make money Ill give it a try - A Risque Novelty catagory would be an attraction - It would also be nice to allow some good ole American offsite sales and advertising to happen. Unlike ebay.

Again, I agree Time.

I looked at their source on the main page and they do have the meta tags and such in place, and a robot.txt in place too. So it's search engine friendly. Done pretty well, and ALMOST exactly the same as ebay's... HMMMMMMMM. Makes you think sometimes. Good luck in getting them into the engines though.

ok4leather:

I saw it mentioned over in their FAQ that links to our own websites is allowed. So that is good.

Again, though, a voice of reason needs to come into play. We wait and see.

well that is refreshing...they actually thought ahead..LOL
thanks for checking that..Yes, i like that we are "allowed" to link to our sites very very much..i give as good as i get.I bring customers to the auction site...& this has been something that has bugged me so much at the big place..we pay them & we are not "allowed" to link to our business..are they kidding?Just good business..
Don't worry about the searches..even by mentioning them on chat boards it is picked up..i have studied this..i am actually in yahoo google & i did not pay a dime..very easy..when they are linked to all our websites that helps too..well that is really encouraging..website with a cow & a brain..
wow..
yes time will tell...we sure do need something new..tell em to hurry up...holidays coming..thanks for checking that info ..good luck.great info here now we are a little freer to have an intelligent exchange of info...i love what auctioncow said to about being allowed to discuss any site on their boards..good for them!!What i like the best is they are working with sellers, people that actually have an idea of what we are up against & what we need to do our business.. thanks Oh one last thought auctioncow should be encouraged by the number of posts on this thread!

I read on the original message board on auctioncow they had a couple of weeks back (which once AW did the thing with the CC they upgraded their board), that someone, and now since that board is gone I don't know who posted it.

Anywho... they stated that somehow they linked the cow to a very large powerseller on ebay. I don't know how they arrived at this conclusion and of course the cow people have not said a word about it.

I can't blame them as I am certain as soon as word leaks back to ebay, the SS will put a stop to the powersellers presence there.

Speaking of their old message board... it was a PAID for message board that charges a monthly fee. It also had VERY few functions and not even smileys. So there is another fine example that you don't ALWAYS get what you pay for, Toollady.

I know I just HAD to say it.

Actually,

The cow was linked back to an ID SIMILAR to a powerseller ID.

If you look back to about page 2, or it could be on page 3, the ID is mentioned, just before my gegy comment.

toollady not that one, it was on their older message board they were using. I know which powerseller you are talking about, but that is not the one.

THAT one would be great though, and a total blow to ebay if that powerseller ever got behind another site.

You gotta see this! go to any auction at ebay, click near bottom on the checkout part where it says more info...that will take you to a page you can click on the checkout message board..
I'd say the sellers have finally had it.finally.

That is odd that ebay would have a link to the sellers board where most of the threads are about how much the sellers dislike the checkout feature. Why doesn't eBay get rid of their boards if they are so anti-ebay? They could save a bunch on moderator salaries too ( an admited low blow to the AW mods ).

Ever since those boards were added there've been more disgruntled users there than happy ones.

I wonder what the rationale is for leaving the boards up. Maybe to let the sellers blow off steam? Maybe because they can moderate those boards and suspend the worst ones from both the boards and eBay itself?
Meg has made a lot of right moves but this is one of her wrong moves ( the leaving of the message boards that are mostly very anti-ebay ).

When is the contest going to start? ( I need a new computer bad! )
It says don't quote me but Patty's post in cow town or whatever those message boards are named, does say in less than a week and tomorrow marks a week since that post.
Gegy did and still does constantly move projected launch dates, or any dates for that matter, and you don't even want to be compared to those guys.

Till the Cows Come Home Contest is slated to start this month (in less than a week), and the launch of auctioncow.com is scheduled in December.

I do not think there will be much change in this schedule, but you never know, so don't "quote" me on it.

I never stated an exact date, but the issue holding up the contest is a technical one. Seems a problem with the form mail scripting on the server hoster we are using. We should have it fixed by this weekend, or just use another server. We gave them time to fix it, but THEIR e-mail has been messing up for us to properly communicate. Don't you just love these things?

Other than that, it is right on schedule, whatever that schedule may or may not be, based upon an arbitrary, but non-quotable timetable that does not coincide with any known schedules, times, dates, or radishes.
