Hi veebee,
Thanks for your comments and concerns.
New users would start at 0 because we could not gather data on your previous transactions through another organization (if I understand the comments correctly).
The community participation numbers are simply guides for users to gauge the potential for risk in a transaction when doing business with a particular member.
The numbers, however, will be calculated automatically and the buyer/seller do not have to remember to leave feedback. The system is simply looking to see if there was a problem with the transaction and awarding/not awarding based on the 30 day period (the Buyer Complaint Process requires filing within a 30-day timeframe).
A point to consider---these apply to all transactions from verified members, not just those that come about from an auction.

So, you're saying that with someone like veebee who has "556 pos.feedback on ebay and probably over 300 billpoint flawless transactions" you have no way to gather that information so they must start at 0 when/if they sign up at PP?!?

And that's PP philosophy in a nutshell: having positive FB for online auctions means nothing; having no negatives means nothing--even if this glowing FB covers a period of years. Only access to a bank account & 30 day period free from complaints *on PP* is insurance that a seller is trustworthy--all others, regardless of their records elsewhere are scam artists just waiting for the right moment to rip others off.

PayPal is concerned about the privacy of its users?

Hi bunnicula,
Those numbers would be from another organization (eBay/Billpoint) and would not reflect activity in the PayPal network. There would be no way for us to import that data into our system, as it belongs to an entirely different party. I see what you are saying, but I am trying to advise why we could not use that data.
As a reminder, these numbers are based on all transactions, not just those related to auctions.
