the seller may be able to keep their prices down by using free materials vs. buying them.

The seller would be able to keep his prices down - and "save the bidder" even more money, by stealing the merchandise. Or he could sell damaged or counterfeit goods as first-quality and the real McCoy. But that would be dishonest...

In my book at least, "it will save me money" is not a legitimate question for turning a blind eye. It is cynical and self-serving. Funny thing is, the justification is usually "Oh, it's just a little thing." Hey, if it's just a "little thing," then it should take very little effort to do the RIGHT thing. I could see if, for example, you fellated a stranger if he threatened to kill you if you didn't, but that's hardly the same as doing it voluntarily because he'll buy you a drink.

I know that I did it and didn't know. I don't ever do it again. I remember the guy at the post office asked me if That was a Priority bag inside out. He let it go. But I never did it again. Did they charge you Priority rate. and then sent it book rate?
Then I would be ticked off.

It looks like I'm in the minority here - I think she should turn the seller in (assuming that the seller doesn't respond in the near future with a 'thank you for letting me know that this was illegal, etc.'. What the seller is doing *is* illegal. Odds are very good that he/she *knows* it's illegal. Yes, it's a *little* thing (a cardboard box) but he/she might do this all the time. When is it not *little*? Ten boxes? Fifty? Five hundred? And what about all the other sellers doing the same thing? In fact, maybe this seller is a competitor (sp?) of mine and I'm being put at a disadvantage because she ships cheaper than I can because she uses stolen boxes and I buy mine (or have to spend time finding them or whatever).

I understand that cost of priority mail will be going up in the near future. (This was the subject of a recent thread on this board.) Why do you think they're going up? Well, one of the reasons might very well be the losses the post office is taking on stolen cardboard boxes. Have you ever tried *buying* a good cardboard box? They're not cheap.

I have two sons and they know that 'stealing' is 'stealing'. The amount of money (or whatever) is not at issue. It's still wrong. If everyone stopped letting the *little things slide*, maybe we wouldn't have so many *big things*.

last time i checked the post office offered the boxes for FREE, the seller did not turn the box inside out, and was courteous enough to consider the damage the usps frequently has with books. I personaly do not see the theft of a Free box, heck when i move the post office supplied me with half of my moving boxes, i have since recycled them for shipping, but where is the theft, if the seller ha used a regular video box would this be wrong?

HCQ - for a purist like you, who even turned herself in for cheating on an exam (!), you sure have some twisted ideas

How you can possibly equate 'stealing' a cardboard box with getting raped is absolutely beyond me. That's like saying chewing gum leads to smoking crack.

Look at it this way:

- tracey has sold a ton of stuff on eBay (her admission),
- tracey probably relies on her eBay sales to help with the finances around the home,
- tracey has a macho husband who will shoot anyone that threatens her - the varmit who stole the cardboard box will probably not retaliate directly if she rats him out

But, that varmit can certainly mess with her eBay business and cause her all kinds of grief. I am a living example of the results of this kind of retaliation. Tracey needs to ask herself "is it really worth it for me to do my civic duty and rat out this varmit for a 5 cent cardboard box?"

When does common sense outweigh principles?

This is truly amazing that the person wanting the seller to abide by the rules most of us follow is getting ridiculed. Something's wrong with this picture.

I guess I'm in need of "getting a life" by some's standards because I think it should be reported.

i am curious, do you then file a report if your bank keeps the fractions of a cent at the end of the month, instead of giving them back to you?

traceyg: I don't know if you're serious about turning this seller in or not. If you are, that's your business. This thread is degenerating into a muck of insults. I'm finished with it.

Just decide on your own what you think is best and do it. Either you will wake up the next day feeling like a hero or a heal. I disagree with you very strongly on this entire thread but I will not be a party to name calling and mud slinging.

Good luck and I hope you can decide for yourself what is the right thing to do. And, by the way, that may very well be different from what I or anyone else here considers it to be. We all have our own conscience to deal with, and we have to ultimately live with our own decisions. You don't have to take the abuse given out here. You might want to consider asking the moderator to lock this thread before things get even more out of hand. But then again you might not...

SO WHAT if the seller saved a few cents by reusing a box - How did it hurt YOU?? Was your purchase in satisfactory condition when it arrived?? If it was, WHAT DO YOU CARE what kind of box was used? You don't think the postal service makes enough $$$ as it is? The post office already made their money if the box was a used one - and if it was covered with brown paper then it WASN'T shipped priority - so how is this "stealing"??

One of the original posters points of argument was that he/she stated a concern over the increase in costs. This was my actual reply to that:

"One of the things I noticed was mention of costs going up. While I'm not condoning the misuse of priority boxes, keep in mind that the seller may be able to keep their prices down by using free materials vs. buying them."

I go on to state that perhaps the seller is unaware that what they are doing is illegal, and is only trying to cut down on shipping costs to the buyer. I did not excuse the seller, nor did I state that saving the buyer money would be an acceptable excuse.

Sorry, quotes out of context tend to annoy me.

Tracyg,

I guess its a bad idea to poll people on what to do. Listen to your conscience and you can't go wrong... that's the voice you'll have to listen to.

I'm sorry! I just can't get the picture out of my head! I keep seeing an episode of "Cops!" Remember, when the Postal Inspectors busted down the guy's door & ransacked the apt & carted him off -- for misuse of PriorityMail Boxes!

Then he ends up in a Kafka story & nobody will tell him why he was arrested!

Or was that the dung beetle? Actually, I know it was a potato beetle, but like DanQ, I couldn't remember how to spell it!

For poops&giggles, I've been watching Court TV the past couple of days -- kind of puts things into perspective ya know!

I think that the TraceyG should pay USPS for the priority box because the receiver is the one who is charged for postage due. She should also include a notice on her About Me page and warn all postage cheaters that she will turn them into the Federal authorities and they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law!

That should resolve her moral dilemma.

Like macandjan, we had a neighborhood "do-gooder," whose life was so lacking in anything meaningful that his major enjoyment was calling the police and/or city building department over any infraction he saw, no matter how insignificant.

We and our neighbors have been treated to knocks on our front door by the police on many occasions for transgressions ranging from a flat tire on my husband's car (when he was perfectly aware of it but unable to do anything about it having just gotten out of the hospital with a broken pelvis) ... to putting our garbage out on the curb a day early (we were going out of town).

For years we turned the other cheek, realizing this character deserved more pity than loathing. However, everyone eventually reaches their limit. A week after dragging that blasted trash back UP the driveway, I noticed Mr. Perfect putting HIS trash out at 4:00, 2 hours earlier than city ordinance allowed.

Yep, I called the police. You could hear him bellowing all the way down the street. Seems he thought the rules applied to everyone but him! Not surprisingly, he hasn't reported anyone since.

Do what you have to do. Just remember, though, sometimes it really does come back around, no matter how perfect we may think we are.

I think maybe I'm the one who needs to 'get a life' for letting myself get so wrapped up in this mess. I guess I better go try and sew the tag back on that dern mattress.....

Before I end up on the next episode of "Cops"

What a fine thread! Unbelievable.

Someone said "When someone abuses a service that I enjoy it bugs me also"
in ignorance.

The boxes are not free, they are paid for by the extraordinary rate obtained by making it so convenient to use Priority Mail instead of lower priced services. The boxes are not a service, they are an incentive to buy high cost postal delivery.

RB Fabulous posting. I don't think that you've ever been better.
