Some federal definitions:

Pasteurized process cheese food is a variation of process cheese that may have dry milk, whey solids, or anhydrous milkfat added, which reduces the amount of cheese in the finished product. It must contain at least 51% of the cheese ingredient by weight, have a moisture content less than 44%, and have at least 23% milkfat.

Kraft Singles are Pasteurized process cheese food

Pasteurized process cheese spread is a variation on cheese food that may contain a sweetener and a stabilizing agent, such as the polysaccharide xanthan gum or the Irish moss colloid carrageenan, to prevent separation of the ingredients. The cheese must be spreadable at 70 F, contain 44 to 60% moisture, and have at least 20% milkfat.

Velveeta is PP cheese spread. Even less cheesy than Kraft Singles. It is classified the same as that nasty gook that comes in spray cans.

Pasteurized process cheese product is process cheese that doesn't meet the moisture and/or milkfat standards.

Imitation cheese is made from vegetable oil; it is less expensive, but also has less flavor and doesn't melt well.

try the French way, focus on quality ,not quantity.
food is expensive in Japan, too many middleman.
They also like to buy some thing from carryout or dept store food section and take it home to enhance their home cook meal.
but they live in small quarters and dont have to drive as much as we do,so savings there.

No No No - Velveeta is not a cheese spread.. it is a neccesary food staple. How else are you supposed to make grilled cheese sandwhiches, maccaroni and cheese and bacon, cheese & chives baked potatoes. It is a status symbol. The ability to afford and utilize Velveeta properly is proof that you have moved beyond the Top Ramen and 3 for $1 Mac n Cheeze level of financial existance. Next level is the one where you stop at McDs for breakfast as opposed to just wanting to stock up on condiments.
