I purchased a very old book at a yard sale this weekend, and maybe someone can tell me where to list it on ebay, and what to ask for it? Im not experienced in this category, and any advice would be appreciated. Its called THEATRE De MARIVAUX and its dated 1732. Its all in French, so I dont know much more than that. Some of the pages are free of the binding and the edge binding has all the leather peeled off, except down at the bottomm where the words THEATRE are still viewable. Otherwise, for its age, its in pretty good shape. Also, on the inside cover, there is a stamp that says "MARIA OUSPENSKAYA School of Dramatic Arts". Im guessing it was used at a Ladies School, where maybe the "ton" of society sent their daughters?

Author is M. LOUIS MOLAND and its a first edition, says PARIS, LIBRAIRIE GARNIER FRERES. (I dont know French, but that second word looks like LIBRARY to me).

Well, the "Librairie Garnier Freres" would be the Garnier Brothers Library, I think (probably the publishers??)

I found some biographical information about the person the book is probably about:

Pierre Carlet de Chamblain de Marivaux {mah-ree-voh', pee-air' kahr-lay' duh shahm-blan' duh}, b. Feb. 4, 1688, d. Feb. 12, 1763, the most important French playwright of the 18th century, wrote numerous comedies for La Comédie Française and La Comédie Italienne of Paris, the most famous of which are The Game of Love and Chance (1730; Eng. trans., 1923) and Les Fausses Confidences (1737; trans. as False Confessions, 1958). The French word marivaudage signifies the flirtatious bantering tone characteristic of Marivaux's dialogue. He also published a number of essays in the manner of Joseph Addison and Sir Richard Steele, and two important though unfinished novels, La Vie de Marianne (The Life of Marianne, 1731-41) and Le Paysan parvenu (The Fortunate Peasant, 1735).

Maui..could your book be a book of plays by Marivaux, complied by Moland?

Garnier would probably be the publishers

If memory serves me, a librairie is a bookseller, not a library (book lender).

Nebula5..your right about librairie not meaning library...biblioteque (not sure of the spelling) is the word for library.

Does it have any illustrations?

Picking my jaw up from the desk...thanks everyone for your help! How fascinating! There are no illustrations, but there is alot of "scene" titles, so Im assuming its a play. I havent looked at the links supplied yet, but thats what Im fixing to do after I eat dinner...then I will come back here and drool...er...read up more on this book and the responses you kind people have given.

Kel..um...yeah. Sure. You would take really good care of it wouldnt you?

Its so awesome to hold this in my hands...knowing the age of it and wondering how many hands held it, and visualizing young french girls or guys reading the words and studying for the play. Too cool

Be back in a bit. Thanks again everyone!

One more thing... I found what appears to be a copy of the same book on Alibris. I'd provide a link here but it would distort the page because it's so long. I used 123pix.com's book search tool.

Mauimoods -
It's WORTHLESS ... send it to me and I'll take care of it for you!

"LES SERMENTS INDISCRETS, Cinedue eb cinq actes et en prose, Respresentee pour la premiere fois par les comediens Francais Ordinaires Du Roi, Le 8 Juin 1732."

The Indiscreet "serments", ____ in five acts and prose, Presented for the first time by the "les comediens Francais Ordinaires Du Roi" June 8, 1732
Research the French Theater briefly to find out who the company of actors was.

In 1929 Maria founded the School of Dramatic Art in New York ... the book may not be from 1732 (although it's always possible her school had a copy), but the play was presented then.

PARIS, LIBRAIRIE GARNIER FRERES
Published in Paris by Garnier Freres (Garnier Brothers)

Let me look in my old encyclopedias at home - they have a bunch of stuf on old plays.

Maria O was a famous Russian actress who migrated to Hollywood in the 1930's ish. I remember because I collected movie star photos as a kid! (Don't ask!). Actually, you can find out more by going to the Motion Pictures Academy something something.....

abacaxi's translation is very close. Here are some of the blanks filled in.

"LES SERMENTS INDISCRETS, Cinedue en cinq actes et en prose, Representée pour la première fois par les comédiens Français Ordinaires Du Roi, Le 8 Juin 1732."

Indiscreet sermons, ? in five acts and prose, Presented for the first time by the King's "Ordinary French Comedians" (on) June 8, 1732

Mauimoods- I read the article in ebay Mag. Great customer you got there!

Maria Ouspenskaya played Lon Chaney's mother
in a werewolf movie. I can't for the life of me come up with the title, but do remember her name.

I just had to ask since nobody else has. I know I am not giving any advice, BUT how in the heck did someone let go of this at a garage sale. I know I have bought some really neat items from unsuspecting people, but still one that is that old sure shocks me!! I recently sold a 1914 book on the Mormon church on Ebay and I found it at a thrift store. Keep us in touch what you do with this book. I am basically nosey and would loooove to hear what you do with this book

Maui...
Checked AddAll and di NOT find the specified title, BUT the author seems to have QUITE a few works in this genre...more of an "editor" than an "author" in most cases...The Garnier Bros were listed as publisers on almost all of Moland's works..

alley1snet, the gal that sold it had a bunch of old books...didnt really look close at them (guess I should have) and I got it for a dollar. Only reason I bought it was because of the date...looked unique, and I thought to myself "wonder if I can get at least a few extra bucks for it on ebay". Heck, thats what I think with EVERYTHING I buy...never expect to make a killing (although very pleased when something fetches more than I originally thought). But yes, I will let you know what it goes for

Hi ubie!
