Cheryl, I don't advocate discriminating against overweight people. But I do believe they should grab themselves by their fatass and pull UP!

It's horrible to see children allowed to become fat and fat people ARE discriminated against.

Mags - you are just a bad bad girl!!

I'll leave you on that note. Time to head home. Try to behave while I'm gone. (Yes, I am leaving in the middle of the night - nothing I want to see here so this way get out of the state during the night so I have plenty of daylight to explore the next one.)

I agree....it's just another form of discrimination...this time against people with weight problems.

Maybe we should also add people who drink excessively to this 'discrimination' list - after all...their drinking isn't doing their livers any good and liver transplants are expensive too.

And maybe we could add not paying for all those who have unprotected sex and getting different STD's too....after all their choices were stupid.

Let's have the government control ALL areas of our lives....NOT!!!

You mean because she is too stupid or weak to choose not to have sex and get pregnant?

That seems to be the choice most people refuse to see.

Profe, what happend to "gym" classes in school?
As I remember we were required to go.

Yes, Ron, exactly, some women do stupidly have sex and get pregnant, you don't , how nice and easy for you

Seems the right wing abstinence program has been a miserable failure (kinda like SS privatization). Humans are just that Human.

For every stupid woman who gets pregnant there was an equally stupid man getting her pregnant.......a man who will be very surprised that if abortion is banned he, and so so many other men, will have more and more child care payments

Please tell all your male friends to quit having sex and then there won't be a need for abortions.

I think that most fat people realize that their size is not a desirable condition either from an aethestic or medical viewpoint. Why adults choose to be fat in spite of the overwhelming evidence that excess weight is unhealthy is a very good question. Unfortunately, overweight children learn their attitudes toward food and exercise from their overweight parents.

Nearly all Americans have an abundance of healthy food. The problem is that they eat too dam much healthy food. Portion size is key to maintaining weight control along with an appropriate amount of activity.

Lots of schools have cut "extra" programs like PE, in order to provide more in class time on core curriculum. Eliminating positions, they often have to share a PE teacher between 2 or more schools. At my school, kids get PE for 45 minutes, once a week. Hardly enough.

mingotree crowed it, "Humans are just that Human."

Well, doh! Yes, there is an obesity problem in America and the world. Many of you are confused, often a person gets health problems and then gains weight. And, yes, some people are overweight and this indicates a health problem. Don't just lump the lumpy into one group that could 'easily' solve their problem.

I have followed the fat trend and just have one observation. Bears instinctively put on fat to hibernate. Why is the human race putting on fat? Is this one of those responses, like more boys being born when there is a war? Or is there a 'winter' coming?

Nah, never mind, what do I know?

I haven't suggested government involvement at all. I'd like to see people take some accountability for their lifestyle choices, that's all.....

...not quite. And while I was addressing my post to ALL, not only your comments profe, you were the one who brought up that smokers are already discriminated against. And that has come about BY LAWS....as many decided we needed government regulation to step in an control what some believed needed to be controlled. This is no different. Complaining about ONE area that people choose to do....and that others want regulated because THEY feel they're paying higher insurance rates for.

My point is there are many things people CHOOSE to do in their own lives that effect those health care costs.....but only one is being singled out.

Kraft, one reason may be alot of the health insurance companies do not even cover treatments for obesity as they do for alcohol or substance abuse. - Food Abuse or guzzle indulgence, why not? The decision not to cover any programs seems kind of counter-productive in the long run to me.

But I just read a study from 1995 that stated direct costs associated with obesity represent 6% to 7% of the National Health Expenditure. That doesn't seem like a very high percentage.

I think the 'health' aspect of it is getting blown out of proportion. Let's face it, there is a great deal of prejudice against overweight people. The 'health care cost' lament is just the crux that aims to legitimize the complaint for all the other things unpleasant things associated with it.

And I don't think they feel bad about it anymore! Have you seen what they are wearing? Belly shirts, short shorts, spandex, low riders with belly shirts...ewwwwww! I don't want to see that! And it's not just the young ones.

I've known some who dressed very nicely, even considered classy. I can tell you, it did not involve showing cellulite.

SW: I think you are right. Maybe food is becoming the overriding addiction/stress reliever of choice in this country? Funny, it seems so harmless of all vices at the time. (Surely, alcohol and drinking has much worse consequences - not to mention what it does to ones personality?) Or a surly alcoholic, stopwhining! - I cant stand them!

I also think 5-20 years ago the assisted technology was not there, either.... On almost anything - if there is an easier way to do it, they will invent a technology to do it for you. Or make it easier to get it done. And industrialized nations will always prefer easier. We are very spoiled it seems.

To answer your question, you can't. People will get offended. I get offended when someone tells me I'm too thin and need to gain weight. I know I am too thin and don't need to be reminded of it just as over weight people are aware they are over weight. Kicking someone in their self esteem won't help matters. More often than not, it makes the situation worse.

Children are a different story, though. Adults can control what and how much they eat. Children are fed what the adults feed them. I hate seeing obese children. Prof is right in saying that many schools have cut out phys ed and other activities. Most of it is due to cuts in budgets. Over weight parents tend to be more sedentary and I think they pass that on to their children. We don't get much exercise around here in the winter months (I hate snow and cold), but once summer rolls around all of us, including Tiffany, go bike riding, hiking and walking. The TV is rarely on.

What really bothers me now is that Tiffany, at the ripe old age of 7, is conscious about her weight. She thinks she's too skinny. She worries about what she wears and how her hair looks. Children have enough on their minds without adding their weight to it.

Last time I checked it took people in order to create a baby. Ron, I guess in this case you would be the stupid male that contributed to the problem.

stopwhining: Lots of companies in Texas give away cars. A car dealer in a town near me of less that 15,000 population gives them away often.
When there got to be a Neiman-Marcus store in half the D/FW shopping malls, they lost it.
The Marcus family sold out years ago and it has just been sold again in May to a holding company from Ft. Worth. The main store in downtown Dallas is the only prestige store left in the area.
Some comments from customers:

"I will be less likely to shop here if the quality of the higher-end retail goes down," Brandi Bloodworth, a 24-year-old Dallas resident, said Monday while shopping at the downtown store for a new hat to wear to the Kentucky Derby. "Since I was an infant, I have been wearing Neiman's."

Mathew Thomas recently moved to Tampa, Fla., from Dallas and was in town for business when he decided to stop in and buy his wife a present. "I'll watch it very closely," he said of new ownership of Neiman Marcus. "At first dip in quality, I may have to reconsider."
