For pity's sake, I should have told you that Ted Turner would have floated the whole deal. She wouldn't have had to know about any of it. Brother. I knew you'd give us the brush. At least you didn't use the old "I have to spend more time in my garden" line. I know, I know: When you're on your deathbed, you don't want to find yourself saying "If only I'd paid more attention to those nasturtiums..."

I met John McCain at the Grand Wailea here on Maui when we slipped away for a few days...talked to him by the pool for awhile. This was right after he withdrew from the race and I told him that I was crushed that he was no longer running. He is an EXTREMELY nice man with a gorgeous wife. My kids liked him too and commented that he talked to them like people instead of 'little kids'. I asked him if he was going to consider running again in the future and he winked and said "Well, we'll just see..." lol If he does run again, he has my vote.

I really like McCain, because he seems to be a Democratic Repulican!...As I grow older, I seem to see my former "liberal" views diminshed a bit!
I feel that there are MANY in US who may feel the same...we are proud of our country, and our heritage, but we feel the "Liberals" are just a bit TOO liberal...
I HOPE that McCain DOES run in the next election, cuz this time out, no matter WHO we select, WE ARE SCREWED!!!!..

BTW...what does everyone think of Ralph Nader's "nomination"?

Pareau:
I read kafka for the first time when I was twelve. Turning into something your family
neither likes, appreciates nor understands is a very real issue at that age.

antiquary: I was all set to vote for John McCain too. It seems every year they throw up one or two very good choices during the primarys but they are never in the final running when the election comes around.
It really ticks me off.

I think there needs to be some slicing of heads all across the board of elected officials... senators, reps, all of 'em... lot of bloodsuckers out there who are in the game for the glory and their own comfort, power, and padded pockets, and couldn't give a rat's patootey about the people they supposedly serve. humph!

Oh well, Ubie.
I actually did vote for McCain in the primary here. I couldn't vote in the last 2 presidential elections, since I was a US territorial resident. Hard to get excited over Boring and Shrub.

On reading this, I got a great image of a dais populated by fat cats with spiral-sliced ham for heads.

Here's for truth in campaigning...

A Tale of Two Cities Revisited

Tegan-- I think that a good deal of McCain's appeal to me, given the alternatives, is that he seems to have retained some degree of self through the political process. All politicians have to compromise their beliefs and values to succeed and McCain is no exception, but at least he hasn't bartered his entire soul away, and for that, if nothing else, I think he is worthy of some respect and trust.

Pareau -- the meaning is not in nasturiums, but perhaps tomatoes.

Hey Pareau. How are ya?

I'm only slightly familiar with Portishead. They're a little too electronic and British for me, but from what I've heard they're definitely interesting.

James.

Hello---I'm at a real quandray this fall. Have never registered in my life---but now living in a small town and my Flea Market Buddy is up for reelection on council. Just to give you a feel for things--for years I have called him Wally---everyone and the ballot calls him Walter. URK.
Going to garsh darn inlist (know that's the wrong term--give me credit or not--having been 47 years on this planet I have never voted--this is a biggie for me)
So great--I want to vote for my first and ever political buddy Wally (Walter) and dang--going to have to pick the blame president too. Sheesh--having never voted--never been aligned to a party---but Gore sure can Kiss---so what if Bush snorted. Do I want a pres that can snort or kiss passionately? Of course--the Kiss is on My List.
Simplistic---of course--but Wally can count on my vote!! Go Walter!!

Putting forth an old idea that I still think has merit-the NOTA option.

All ballots(local, state, federal)must have "None of The Above" as an option. In the event NOTA receives more votes than any candidate, the election is voided and all candidates are barred from running again, perhaps for that cycle, perhaps forever.

Current officeholders remain in place while new primaries and elections are set up. Repeat as necessary.

If this system were in place today, I doubt W could have raised the kind of money he has or Gore would be the nominee of his party.

Well, thank you Pareau. Sorry for the late acknowledgement of your nomination but I was unaware that I had been proferred as an option.

In the event that I should actually achieve this high office I want all to know what they are getting by offering my minimalist platform in advance of the election.

I am totaly against underhanded influence peddling. I intend (if elected) to peddle access to my influence in a completely above board and public manner - by eBay auction. As each major issue comes to be decided I will auction my influence/vote in a no reserve ($0.01 starting bid) auction. This will allow the public to know exactly whose pocket I am in and will also allow them to verify my honesty (i.e. when bought I will stay bought). My TOS will be reasonable and I will offer free shipping.

Antiquary ROFL

Didn't realize you were from Texas, too!

Since you are bowing out and Molly needs a running mate how about we offer
Jeff Foxworthy or you know what's name, that guy that does "Here's your Sign"

Tex

Or Doctor Beetle
Heck, at that low a starting price maybe we can afford to influence our "goverment"

Hi texas1958!

I'm not from Texas; just a fan of Molly's great political satire. Actually she would probably make a great Secretary of Education, cutting right through all the pedantic BS and toppling more than a few simulated-ivory towers.
