Refer to this thread, apparently there had to be a whole new thread devoted to the topic. So I went to the dump today and............. Heather
And that and the people dumping garbage are the reasons why our local Salvation Army Thrift Store has hired security to man the donation box area during off-hours.

Ok, so you aren't going to like my answer. Let me apologize in advance if I offend.
Christians, Jews, & possibly others who deem the old testament of the Bible to be truth would recall one of the commandments saying Thou Shalt Not Steal. This situation would be classified as stealing, as would many other things (seemingly minute) be classified as well. One poster pointed out there are shades of gray, and basically it depends on the magnitude of what is involved (i.e. selling a small amount of marijuana vs. being a drug lord). Stealing is stealing, no magnitude involved, because He watches & knows what we do.
My dad was a fairly dishonest person, and his motto was, "It's ok if no one knows." I don't agree with that either.
My assumption for atheists (disclaimer here, I am truly out of my territory here) is that it would be difficult for them to define stealing in light of not being accountable to a higher being, thereby permitting shades of grey, justification, etc.(so all answers are correct) But again, I truly cannot speak for them or know what is in their hearts.
Me writing this post on company time? Yup, that is stealing, too, so I liked the post that referred to checking that our own backyards are clean before we say anything about others.

I've seen people going through donations although I have never seen anyone actually walking away with them;although I suspect that's exactly what their agenda was.
My cats know it's wrong to eat out of the others' bowls; I would think that even the stupidest person alive would too.

I don't think it takes being accountable to a higher being to recognize that taking something that belongs to someone else is wrong, even if "He" (or anyone else, for that matter) is not watching.
P.S. I checked my own backyard, and found that in the past, I've done things I take no pride in. That doesn't change the fact that taking something which belongs to another, without their permission, is theft. And I think that my past actions do not in any way preclude me from saying so.
"I have had my own disagreements with Jeanyu, but this is a little unfair, she has taken a real beating around here the last few weeks so be a little nicer?"
I'm surprised to hear you say this. Do you believe that this is somehow less wrong than padding shipping costs or abusing the feedback forum?
I do agree with you that it is the message that should be attacked and not the messenger.

labbie, you really didn't miss much. Jeanyu just had her right hand cut off, was hung, drawn and quartered, had her entrails burned, and her brain examined to see if it was abnormal. I think they search for a soul also but evidently didn't find one.

outoftheblue: I am not innocent of what some of the people are doing here, hell, I have jumped on the bandwagon and attacked people, like mlboyko, who DID deserve it, but I read a thread recently in the RT that actually had my feelings hurt for her. Heather

First of all I want to state I have NEVER taken anything out of a Goodwill Container.
But, after all I've heard about these rotten people that "offer" to volunteer for the Goodwill and then help themselves to all the good stuff to put in their auction booths, I would not hesitate for even One Heartbeat, to drag a rake out of my truck and help a poor person get what they needed.
And if the cops got me for it, I would go to jail with pride in what I had done.
So Pfft to the self-righteous in your Glass Houses.

Hello,
First of all without reading this whole thread, I want to say this:
ONE MAN'S JUCK IS ANOTHER MAN'S TREASURE!!
Second of all when I take something to Goodwill I walk it in.......BUT.......If I couldn't walk it in.......to me it is something I don't want, it is too good for the DUMP so I figure I will take it to Goodwill and let them decide. NOW......I DON'T CARE WHO GETS IT........as long as it may be useful to someone. If I have to leave it outside on the curb or whatever, I don't give a rat's a$$ what happens to it after that. At least it didn't go to the DUMP!!
I'm not looking out for the poor......there is no such thing in this country THESE DAYS. I was raised in a deprived environment so I know what it is to be conservative and use everything to it's full usefullness.
So jeanyu, if you want my goodwill deposites, help yourself. I'm all for turning a buck!!

Pilfering from the goodwill bin is like starving dogs fighting over a bone. How hungry are you that you'll steal from a charity?
Go dumpster dive behing a fat a$$ mall. Or behind the local U's dorms. Or the view condos. You will find better junk.
I don't do it that often. I have a couple of friends who went through college as major divers. I mean they never bought a thing.
Even from goodwill...oh. tell a lie. They did fork over $5 to my mom for a used microwave.
My fave find of late? Some guy must have thrown out his old girlfriends stuff in a huff: Patagonia, Anne Taylor, and Tommy Pullmyfinger. I nearly fell over!
No I didn't dance around the dumpster, I followed protocol and acted like I was walking my dog after I loaded up.
Anyhow. I am keeping the Patagonia. Freakin' celestial blue!!!!!! My FAVE!!!!!!!
(dance dance dance)
Capriole
only celestial blue here

I keep searching for divorced people selling off their ex's car for a buck, just to spite them. Never seem to be in the right place at the right time, though
Maybe a good ebay occupation would be to follow local divorce proceedings and offer to "clean out" the offending parties's stuff...
Given the divorced rate, you may make quite a nice living doing so.

I've seen thrift shop managers dump stuff they didn't want outside their doors, next to their trash bins, etc.--in full violation of the sanitation laws. Why? I dunno--maybe too lazy to put it in the proper receptacle, maybe hoping it'd find a home. Can't guess at their intentions, just as there's no way to know what an individual who puts things beside a donation box instead of inside of it intended.
If you want to donate something, put it IN the donation box/donation dumpster. The area outside the dumpster is called "sidewalk," or "street." Unless it's a clearly marked "donation sidewalk," donations made to the sidewalk seem fair game for anyone who comes along. What's inside the donation box/dumpster, of course, is not.

It's theft, and it's chargeable as theft if a person is caught taking any item which has been donated to a charitable organization.
The goodwill trailers here are staffed, and security people patrol them at night. I suppose that if someone were so inclined they could observe the patrol schedule and make raids in between, if that someone is a thief.
As far as I've seen there are few reformed thieves, and a person who would steal from goodwill or any other such endeavor would also steal from anywhere that they have the opportunity, and from anyone. I sure wouldn't let them in the door if I knew that about them.
If I donate to any one of the organizations I obtain a receipt which I can deduct as a charitable donation. Thus the property has value whatever it may be.
