coolvette: i'm glad somebody can comprehend my words. thank YOU!
empires: the parts of the cluetrain site i've read all seem to be stating that ecommerce is CLUELESS, but that it really doesn't matter in the end result, as the USERS will win out.
In so far as marketing, all sortsa tactics are used -- just like this thread which is specifically a SET UP for everybody to go give HITS to BidBAY, and make sure to read the messagethread in their cafe which provides a link to this thread at AW and in which I am trashed.
Luckily, the homepage looked so attractive, that I actually wanted to see what the community CHAT was like before I instantaneously registered when I read mtnmama say the word FUN, decided to look at how active the community was.
I admit I was sn00kered, hook, line and ALMOST *sinker*, LOL@radh!!
Luckily I read several posts, and then realized: O. I. C. - I've been set up to have a "tantrum" about being trashed at BIDBAY, to which I just surfed over to register, simply because Lynn said, "fun", and instead I find myself being used in simply another variation of slimey viral marketing.
How BORING!!!
How dull!
How monotonously TYPICAL of the eBay-WANNABES to continue to use such underhanded marketing tactics.
I am simply thankful, that even though I am, indeed, a materialistic atheistic sKeptiC, that obviously I am under divine protection, and thusly it will NOT be me that increases their userbase by ONE, not today, not ever.
I would NOT use BidBAY were it the ONLY VENUE on this entire beautiful planet earth whereby I could earn money to feed myself.
I'd sooner FAST unto death, thank you.
KudoS to Bidpay's CEO -- I hope you are ecstatic with the HITS your site and your messageboard gets today, and I hope you absolutely REVEL in your attempts to humiliate me.
You almost snagged me alla the way in, but thankfully, I just happened to click on CHAT.
Obviously, I am extraordinarily lucky today, LOLOLOLLOL!!

empires: i've never heard ANY, not even r-u-m-o-r-s, not ANYTHING about Yahoo Auctions EVER being bought out.
Do you have any reports to substantiate your wait??

radh- Nothing substantial. Only hypothetical. Why not? Purr-fect set up at this point. No income generated. Why not sell while the interest is high. My guess is the BIG ONE will merge or buy it. ( My guess only ). Afterall she was the #3 on Fortune 500 this year.

I have given them all more than a fairshot. I sell only antiques.
Frankly, even with Ebays excessive catagories... I would rather schlep around Ebay than list elsewhere and be boxed in with thousands of new items and antique 'repros'.
Schlep: To roam about aimlessly without direction or purpose.

mtnmama: I never stated that YOU were told to come here and post.
The CEO of BidBAY saw fit to make a link to AuctionWatch, AND alla the rest is history.
I have a fervent belief in the essential moral integrity of the universe, and these cheap shots which attempt to increase HITS by humiliating human beings ain't gonna work to create a viable credible increase in any business, any more than hype, buzz or spin have any impact on human beings.
As I said, I am obviously DIVINELY protected and need fear NO sham viral marketing, as the Universe I inhabit is ruled by sheeR g00dness.

empires: do you believe that eBay will purchase Yahoo Auctions, or that Yahoo/eBay will undergo a corporate merger?
Ya know, way way back, when eBay reps were visiting Sotheby's in London, ALLA the mass media concluded that eBay was gonna buy Sotheby's. <~wretch~>
Ah, anyway, those reports were ALL wrong.
What did happen was that eBay was able to get the HEAD OF SOTHEBY'S EUROPE to come and head Butterfield's.
So............ I'm real curious if those talks between Yahoo/eBay last spring had absolutely NOTHING to do with any merger, whatsoever.
Please accept my humblest apologies if I said anything that would discredit or embarass you. I'm very sorry.
I honestly have no idea why he posted the thread except to point out that people don't think ebay has any competition, but then again, I'm not him and he certainly didn't consult me
And for this, I agree...
"have a fervent belief in the essential moral integrity of the universe, and these cheap shots which attempt to increase HITS by humiliating human beings ain't gonna work to create a viable credible increase in any business, any more than hype, buzz or spin have any impact on human beings."
however, I don't think that was his intent either.
This is what I was talking about. Tell JZ's friend to IM me. Tell her the CD is cut and ready and to be published! Who knows maybe I'll auction it off?????? You da bomb. Go Washington Go!!!! Oregon Ducks stink!!! ha ha ha
I cannot believe this guy? The CEO (I'll bet you a thousand Bid Bay Bucks this guy doesn't even know what CEO stands for?) shills like crazy and then actually uses his own name and title in open chat forms?
I laughed my auction butt off the other day when I kept seeing this company mention partnering with a NAZDAQ company??? Perhaps on Commerce Ave they spell it different, but on Wall Street .... they spell it NASDAQ.
Can't help but re-post the below chat board from September. I was going to let it go .. but saw him post today and figured it was a good laugh.

The CE0 of BidBay offered a One BidBay Buck Reward for the first person to give the name and back round of their new Vice President.
The answer is a former State Senator, US Congressman and CONVICTED FELON named Wes Colley.
"One year ago, Cooley was convicted on a felony charge that he falsely
claimed in the 1994 Voters' Pamphlet that he served in the Korean War. He
was fined $7,110 and performed 100 hours of community service."
Normally I do not comment on such activity but sometimes the BidBay ChatRoom really disturbs me. I think they need to re-think their BidBay Contest. I'm not sure why they would gloat about this guy .... as I'm originally from Oregon and I'm quite familar with him.

Mike I agree with you. - It isn't who is first or second but what site produces sales day in and day out.....consistently, that is the truth, and after I over came my eBay attitude - I've found, good, consistent, day in and day out sales on Yahoo - and for FREE! I began moving my auctions to Yahoo in early January, once I learned how to sell on Yahoo, it has been sales, sales, sales, all the time. PTL
I use eBay from time to time, but I use Yahoo all of the time, and we have doubled or tripled our sales since we moved to Yahoo.
Regarding Amazon, I tested it again, with an item we have selling like hot cakes on eBay and Yahoo, and couldn't get a bite on Amazon, or Golds.
I'll stay with Yahoo, I love FREE & LOTS OF PROFIT & SALES!

Bidbay bases their listing's count off of how many items and not individual auctions. So if there is 1000 items in a dutch auction; that 1000 items counts towards the total.
No wonder they've been able to grow so fast. Don't you notice the rapid change in listings from week to week? Boxlot is the same way. Ebay & Yahoo count individual auctions showing a true listing count.
Bidbay just uses a very deceptive way of counting to make the site look big. And plus they are just a big rip off of eBay. Everything is virtually the same. But they do seem to have tons of promotions.
I assume that if you really hate eBay then Bidbay would be the perfect place because of the fact that the site was made in anger of eBay, from a former eBay seller. To me, Bidbay is just a big light show.
So who is second to eBay? I'd have to say Yahoo. It doesn't compare to eBay. eBay just has the market and such a high chance of actually selling something compared to your other auction sites. But this is the internet, right? Anything can happen. We can find that there is another, more fun way of selling, other than auctions. You never know.

La Roca: Boxlot went bankrupt quite some time ago.
empires: thanks for the link; I am trying to stop reading any online news sites and especially any online news that has ANYTHING to do with financial analysts.
Some time back I read an article how the analysts were NOT honest with their ratings on amazon.com, because their own companies stood to earn SO much money in fees when amazon stock is purchased.
I think that that is IMMORAL - all sortsa LITTLE Folk, not Net Billionaires, like Bezos, lost alotta money when the TRUTH about accounting practices started to come out, and the stock plummeted.
The analysts withheld that TRUTH.
I do NOT believe that many people understand what eBay is. I am absolutely positive that Pierre Omidyar and Jeffrey Skoll, DO understand. eBay will last, and last and last. eBay ain't going down the drain; it will succeed.
Meantime, like La Roca mentioned, perhaps OTHER fun ways of selling & buying will develop, along with the development of the Internet. I mean, really, convential ecommerce is NOT a fun way to buy, but very tedious and boring.
I do not see eBay as having CREDIBLE Competition, and we have discussed this at this board for MONTHS. Credible VIABLE venues where independent sellers can support a family.
I ***never*** said, nor even implied that I thought it was good that none of the other 1400+ online auction venues pose ANY threat whatsoever to eBay.
There simply seem to be a lot of people who actually believe eBay will fail; eBay ain't gonna FAIL, eBay is here to stay.
Now that's just reality, IMO, and I sure ain't gonna encourage anybody to put the bulk of their eBiz off of eBay, as it is NOT responsible for me to encourage anyone to endanger their finances because other CEOs happen to "hate eBay", and so open an online auction.
Well, goodie for them! Let them laugh all the way to the bank, which I'm sure they do.
