Del Monte Foods' Profit Doubles in 1Q

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Del Monte Foods Co., a maker of canned fruit, vegetables and tuna fish, said Thursday its earnings doubled in the company's fiscal first quarter, driven by higher pricing, lower integration expense and reduced commodity costs.
Net income surged to $16.2 million, or 8 cents per share, from $8.5 million, or 4 cents per share, a year ago.
Sales rose 7.2 percent to $671.1 million from $626 million last year, driven by price hikes and increased volume from existing and new products.
On average, analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial were looking for profit of 5 cents per share on sales of $642.3 million in the latest quarter.
For fiscal 2006, Del Monte reiterated that it expects sales growth of about 1 percent to 3 percent over fiscal 2005 sales of $3.18 billion. Earnings per share are forecast to range between 75 cents and 80 cents.
For the full year, analysts are predicting profit of 76 cents per share on sales of $3.25 billion.
Del Monte's brands include College Inn, Contadina and Star Kist. Del Monte also makes commercial food ingredients, products for the foodservice industry, and baby and pet food.
Shares of Del Monte rose 8 cents to $10.89 in early trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

I am trying really hard to understand, is Del Monte controlled by Republicans?
I'd be willing to bet other stocks have gone up in the first quarter also, so I am guessing its the Repubicans fault there too

Red - Peepa deeply resents anyone that has a spare dime to their name. If you actually make a profit, you are inherently evil.
I've been a democrat all my life and I never ran across that mentality before. The vast majority of my friends are democrats who run their own businesses (we are, collectively, the world worst employees so we had no choice but to employ ourselves) and we all make money at what we do, we enjoy ourselves, we contribute those funds to the local economy and many employ others (not me, I'm also the world worst boss) who make good money and enjoy their lives. I may be a pain in the ass but I'm not evil and I don't see where any of my friends are either.
I've asked Peepa a couple times why he holds so much resentment for those that make a profit but he's never explained it to me.
I mean, didn't all of those companies also profit during the Cliton years? Were they evil then?

I don't want to put bigpeepa down at all, but I think he would be making some money to be able to have an antique business (he mentioned it here that he did)
MOST ALL Democratic politicians (in the Senate, the House wherever) have money. If there is any out there that are so poor, I would like to hear about them.
Kennedy, Kerry, Edwards, and all the rest HAVE MONEY. And most had money before they entered into the political scene.
So I don't understand it at all.
Both parties have money, made money, come from money etc

This message is for the largest majority of Americans. If other Americans like me stick up for the working class American, the middle class American plus the poor and needy American. I am and they are called anything but good. If under the republican controlled houses you don't like your decrease in living standards. If you see almost everything going up in price except your wages and benefits. If you see you job opportunities going down.

Sorry, peepa. I usually vote Democrat, at least I do since the Republican party became the Party of God, but you're all wet on this one.
I work full time and run a 24 hour a day business, which happens to be quite profitable. I like making money, the more the better, and I won't be made to feel guilty for it. I'm glad Del Monte (not to mention Heinz, why don't you look up their numbers?) made money.
Now, if they abused or took advantage of their employees, put out unsafe products, or caused environmental damage as part of doing business, that'd be a separate issue...but their profits? What do you want them to do, fail?
Bet you don't deal your antiques at a loss. Bet you're not selling people antiques because you want to improve the decor of homes of the poor.
You're turning into nearly as big a troll as Bear.
