The bottom line is that the city of NO knew this was coming for decades, or at least knew the high likelihood of eventual disaster (Just like cities near the San Andreas fault know the big one is coming someday). There should have been an established evacuation plan and it should have covered the people who had no other way out of the city.
Maybe the rescue effort wasn't all it could have been, but if the city had been prepared, much of the death could have been minimized. I'm not going to put the entire blame on the current mayor, but on the entire city management for the past thirty years.
My college Geology teacher explained in great detail how this was inevitably going to happen, and that was three months ago. This was NOT a surprise to anyone. Why the city was not prepared is the real thing that should be investigated.

Thank you dbl. That's true. AND the fact that I recognized there were some people there who CAN think for themselves and come up with a way they can bring themselves and others to safety. Not sit back and wait to be 'saved'.
This just gives them another excuse to bash this President. And they can't deal with the reality that people CAN make better choices, decisions for themselves. Would we still have had some who didn't leave? no doubt, but not hundreds of thousands who could have, but chose to ignore all the pre-hurricane, pre-leveee failing, and who now are blaming the administration for the failure of those same people to have 'followed directions' they were given for their OWN safety.

This is not an ordinary situation in which looters take advantage of an opportunity to take such items as TV's and jewlery. These people are in a basic survival mode, taking diapers and food and possibly things that can be taken in trade. Since the businesses will be compensated by insurance for their catastrophic loss in the first place, I believe that media has directed too much emphasis on this issue, leading some callous ass like duhsquirrel to sit back with his popcorn in the comfort of his home and say "shoot them".

While I'm fully aware that many didn't have other places to go to....they ALL were warned to get out. Those that stayed behind chose to. All this wouldn't have happened to me, because no matter how poor I was, I would have left when the warnings were issued.

Think LindaK's problem is that she is unbelievably STUPID and smug to boot. Yes! a 17yr.old kid stole a school bus, picked up a bunch of people on a freeway overpass, had everyone pool their money to buy gas and drove the bus ( admitted on T.V. that he had never driven a bus before) to the Astrodome in Houston but he was 17, unencumbered and healthy.

Kiara - why bother. If there is one thing that learned this week it's that Linda has all of the compassion of a tin can. We started the week with her complaining because people actually wanted to discuss what was going on here in the US more than in Iraq and ended the week with her blaming the dead and homeless so why even bother?
There were 40 some people found dead in a retirement home day before yesterday but that was their own damn fault right?

One can only imagine the amount of hard drive space she commits to this and how she catalogs the posts. She may even have several removeable hard drives and i'm sure that if that is the case then at least one or two are set aside for certain posters only.
