Barbara Bush, who accompanied the former presidents on a tour of the Astrodome complex Monday, said the relocation to Houston is "working very well" for some of the poor people forced out of New Orleans.
"What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality," she said during a radio interview with the American Public Media program "Marketplace." "And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them."

People have not just lost the structure that was home - they have lost livelihoods - they've lived through conditions most wouldn't wish on their worst enemy. In some cases they've lost family and friends. - but she thinks that being in a shelter with thousands of other people - most of whom they don't even know is "working very well for them".

I guess we can choose to take it in whatever manner we wish to do so.
I took it that the refugees were very happy by the 'welcome' they were receiving from the Texas towns and communities that have opened their state to help them out. That they were thankful for what every Texan is doing for them. Please with it....and that it was understandable because of what they've come from.

I wish I'd seen her say it. I realize that things in print sometimes seem different than they are when you hear them spoken. But it sure seems condescending, and that's about the kindest description I can give it.

I think if people would stop referring to our fellow citizens as refugees, they might feel more compassion toward these displaced American Citizens.. I am unable to return to or live in my home but I don't care to be referred to as a refugee..
We had insurance, we paid our taxes, we evacuated when the hurricane headed our way..we did all the right things but still the hurricane has turned our lives upside down...it really hurts and bothers me to read how many fault the victims...

In other words, she says, with contempt for the poor, that sleeping on the floor of a stadium after losing their home "is working very well for them".
It's not surprising that you didn't "get it", linda.

Email and complain to CNN then...and all the other MSM that are calling those people refugees.

Barbara Bush: Relocation 'working very well' for poor
Tuesday, September 6, 2005; Posted: 8:05 a.m. EDT (12:05 GMT)
What Is This? HOUSTON, Texas (AP) -- Former Presidents Bush and Clinton got smiles, hugs and requests for autographs when they met with refugees from Hurricane Katrina -- but it was Bush's wife who got attention for some of her comments.

Hi Maggie, I thought of you last evening because BBC World news had a report on Slidell and the area near there and they interviewed some who said they are feeling ignored as no food or water has been delivered all these days later. My heart goes out to you and everyone there..... take care.

Linda, what is the matter with you?
Do you think showing any kind of compassion toward people is a weakness?
My God woman, I can't believe someone could be as cold and heartless as you are being.
You have over the past year called others on the carpet for being rude or crude, but what you display in your posts is down right ugly and hateful..shame on you for your total disregard for other human beings... you should pray to god that you never need a helping hand...and have someone like yourself spit in it like you do others. I find you and your attitude stomach turning..
Not to mention that most everyone offered me their kind wishes when they heard that we were in the hurricane's path..but not a word from you...I have to wonder why someone chooses to be so hateful??

Maggie, don't waste your time on lindak. She shows no compassion for anyone and now even laughs at it..... her only interest is that her guy Bush is protected from any blame.
Please know that many others care..... worldwide also.

Thank you Kiara..our little town has nothing! My husband has to travel back and forth from Lafayette and Picayune 3-4 hour drive..to bring in supplies. He bought dog food to bring to the kennel today and water.
Some places have generators and are starting to open their doors for cash paying customers only... our Insurance claim adjusters are supposed to come and see the house and property tomorrow... still no power or water all the trees are down and it will be a long time before the electric company makes it out to us in the rural areas...it will take years to rebuild the town...

That's tough, Maggie. Good luck with the insurance adjusters.
My cousin's home in Pascagoula was flooded so they can't move back for awhile.

Canada has deployed some of their ships and helicopters to the hurricane area and the crew is expected to stay for at least 3 months. Some have criticized Canada for not going to Iraq but they use their military for humanitarian efforts such as this and are greatly needed now. The Canadian Red Cross is there also with a large team. I hope some help in your immediate area, Maggie. Millions of people do care.

I do believe you're getting paranoid now, maggie. You left to visit your daughter....but your husband also left. Why didn't he choose to stay put? Could it be because he had the common sense to remove himself from danger, to actually heed the warnings everyone was given? I believe that's part of why he left. But me holding others to the same standard is seen by you liberals, Bush haters, as having no compassion.
That's your problem and not the reality of the situation with me personally.

oh...peepa...you're confused again......it was BARBARA, not Laura who shared her opinion that those less fortunate appeared to be so happy in Texas they wanted to remain there.
IF you liberals can find a negative in that statement....you're more negative than even I give you credit for being.

I have to say that one of my first thoughts upon hearing this was "well now we know where Junior gets it from." Because, really, this was one of the dumbest things I have ever heard. Yes sir, those folks shacked up in the Astrodome must be plumb happy this happened to them--cuz after all: being made homeless, having all their possessions destroyed, having no job to turn to, and perhaps even losing family members and then having to live in sports arena while trying to get their lives back together is soooo much better than they're used to...
edited to substitute "they're" for "their"...sigh

Why do all of you choose to look at this so negatively? Can you not look at it from the refugees stand point? What they LEFT compared to what they came TO? How much better it was there, than were they'd just come from?
Clearly she sees this as a BETTER situation for them than what they left. And it IS....so she's saying they're so happy they want to stay in Texas, rather than return home.

Why? Because she wasn't referring to the conditions at the Louisiana sports arena, or the other places the refugees had been temporarily staying after the storm hit. No, she was referring to their lives before the storm:
"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them."
And that, in a nutshell, is why people view it "negatively."

After the past week, why is anyone even mildly suprised at Lindas reaction. I think one has to possess sensitivity in order to recognize insensitivity and we have not seen any of the former lately.

They were underprivileged anyway. In other words, they all had a sorry lot in life to begin with, so this little hurricane business has improved their situations. They're better off sleeping on a cot in Texas than they were living in New Orleans...nothing condescending about that
I'd rather sleep on a cot in New Orleans than live in Texas, but that's just me.

My goodness, LindaKKK did get a well-deserved spanking for her UNCIVIL behavior, didn't she. Is this the same LindaKKK who was calling me vulgar and uncivil....sheesh LindaKKK you make me look warm and fuzzy
Civility is definitely in the eye of the beholder.....calling ronnie a neocon is hardly as uncivil as LAUGHING at the plight of Maggie and other hurricane victims.
Only someone truly evil who's soul has shriveled to dust could do that.
But I think it was Maggie's mentioning of her husband that set Linda off this time...the old green eyed monster reared her ugly head
