When you get to the point you're going after Barbara Bush, you know the libs are desparate!

I don't think there has ever been a kinder, nicer, classier first lady than Barbara Bush - unless you count Laura Bush.

What she said was true - that's what ticks you off! Should she had said it - IMO no, it was inappropriate at that time and completely out of character for her - I think her point was that they should take this as an opportunity to make a better life for themselves.

And she's right - they should!

This is my favorite line: "What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas."

Sounds like she's afraid of them staying in Texas or she's just plain afraid of them? You know, being poor, African American and all. Now we know where Dubya got some of his speaking skills.

Cheryl, you ever think she just meant that puts a whole lot of new and substantial burdens on the state of Texas? And how maybe its scary to think of how Texas can now accomodate all these homeless people at once?

That's true too, dbl. The influx in these numbers of people could put an enormous financial drain on any one state...even temporally. And from what I understand this situation, in TX, is acting as a 'staging area' until homes can be found for all these people.

mingotreg, you are just playing ignorant, dingleberry here and everybody knows it.

If you ever stopped to actually 'think' about the process of social services and other government services involved in trying to get homeless people settled...of course, it's scary! Especially on this large a scale. Most states barely eek through the processes of helping the homeless they already have.

You're just so dumb.

I do believe you're getting paranoid now, maggie. You left to visit your daughter....but your husband also left. Why didn't he choose to stay put? Could it be because he had the common sense to remove himself from danger, to actually heed the warnings everyone was given? I believe that's part of why he left. But me holding others to the same standard is seen by you liberals, Bush haters, as having no compassion.

That's your problem and not the reality of the situation with me personally.
........................................

I'm not sure what you mean about me being paranoid, Linda?
We always evacuate during a hurricane. We have the means to evacuate, vehicles, and finances available to do so, not to mention that we are both in good health and do not need assistance... but so many of the poor in the two states, are not in that position.

I am not blaming the government, or the people who didn't evacuate.. lack of education plays a big part along with poverty... but if blame is absolutely necessary.. then Mother Nature should take the brunt of it. Hopefully if they do rebuild they will learn from this disaster and do things better...

I'm hoping as soon as I can return home, when power is restored, to help out in my local area.. as I said 2 homes beside me and one across the street were destroyed, and so many hundreds of others are in need.
Along with feeling blessed that my home survived, comes the guilt that so many around us weren't so lucky.

I must say that I have had so many wonderful offers from people to come and stay with them...from Florida to Minnesota and even up in Canada! People I haven't heard from since High School have been emailing to offer assistance...my heart is bursting with gratitude for the kindness of others! Maggie
Helen.. my prayers are with your sister and her family..

You know what's funny... If that same quote had come out of the mouth Hilary Clinton the conservatives would be all over it.

Even if you don't see nefarious intentions behind that statement, can you at least acknowledge that it was very badly worded?

DBL

I can guarantee that the state of Ohio is in far worse shape financially than the state of Texas. We don't have oil wells here. We WERE a manufacturing state before her husband decided that outsourcing was good for America. However, we are taking in survivors and without the unnecessary commentary as are a lot of other states.

Personally, I don't dislike Barbara Bush. She just should have not said anything. Like someone that wealthy can understand the plight of these people who had nothing to begin with. When was the last time she went without food or water or was referred to as a "refugee"?

Cheryl, I can agree with you as far as Barbara Bush would not be as creative with a lb of cheese as most poor people can be. IOW, that is to say; yes, she probably has no experience being poor herself. But what she does have is years of being around people in 'government' who are charged with providing a solution for these things. So I would think her line of thinking would lean more toward, okay now, how is the State of Texas going to handle all this?

We WERE a manufacturing state before her husband decided that outsourcing was good for America.

C'mon Cheryl, everybody knows manufacturing has been on the decline in this country since the late 80ties. Not only in Ohio, but PA, NJ, MD, and whatever other states that it has been the threshold of employment. I grant you that outsourcing has further weakened the situation but the ball started rolling a long time ago.

Lots of states are taking people in. But the bulk of people are in Texas right now, and many are saying they plan to stay there.

Fenix, it certainly was not the most politically correct thing to say...thats for sure. But I have to laugh at your selective logic here. I mean, your so eager to 'talk and see' the "reality" of dead bodies floating around, but you dont want to admit to the fact that New Orleans had 3X's the crime and poverty rate of the rest of the nation. That should be shusshed away, right? hush!...dont mention that they're all poor- lets pretend we're dealing with something else here. I think if Hillary Clinton dared ever be so candid, conservatives might actually think she has more of a clue than just an agenda.

Dbl - are you having imaginary conversations with a personality you named after me? i don't recall a conversation taking place regarding with poverty rate in New Orleans, much less my selective reasoning regarding it.
That said though... are you trying to say that living on a cot and sharing a bathroom with 12,000 others on the floor of a sports stadium is somehow better than living in poverty in your own home? That's the only way that I can invision how your statement would fit into the topic at hand.

No.1 Stupid statement. I dont even like your personality named after you, why would I make up another one?

No.2 Stupid statement.

Well, all I can say then..is maybe you need to get off your media-fed think tank and develop a better understanding of what constitutes reality in regard to this hurricane's aftermath and Barbara Bush's statements.

fenix, I am very rarely 'witty', but I guess you got me there!

Now what was your question again? Oh. Is it any different being poor in your own home in NO, than poor in texas?

Somebody said dead is dead. Well, Po' is Po' aint no matter where yer at.. far as I'm determined. Why cant we talk about po'ness as factful like as deadness?

Gee.....probably as often as the kerry's have...as the kennedy's have....as a ton of other RICH liberals, democrats have.

For some reason, some appear to think it's only one side who's rich and 'can't understand' the problems. Ever notice how little kerry donates on his tax forms? lol....it's a joke.

Now when Linda mada a pass at Colin, he disappeared for quite awhile.....remember Pi, the black widow spider devours her mate

The last part of that last statement of yours, gotree sounds like self analysis.

I truely view you, gotree as being like the head Vampire here and if we can drive a stake through your heart, if you have one, then all the other Vampires will snap out of their own dementia and back to reality.....maybe.

cheryl - It's all in how one takes what is said. You choose to put a negative context to it...and I don't. Be as negative about as many things as you can be....won't hurt me one bit. But your spiritial advisor might think handling every thing said by people you don't like, can't stand doesn't hurt the person you're saying it about....only your own soul. Some here call is karma....what you give out to others, will come back your way, someday, sometime, someplace. It's your call.
