Thank-you for that post, Rusty. So many people just blindly accept what the government tells you is right or wrong, good or bad for you, when in actual fact, legalizing drugs, including marijuana, would jeopardize the drug companies and those BIG donations they get from drug dealers to keep drugs illegal.
There's no difference between Near, who is a narcotic addict, and a street junkie who buys oxycontin or morphine illegally. The fact that the same narcotic is legal in one setting and not the other makes no difference. An addict is an addict but Near, like Rush Limbaugh, is a more society-accepted addict because her meds are legal.

KD - And that, imo, is because when those same drugs are not necessary for pain relief...it makes their effect much different.
A person addicted to pain medication, as you mentioned above, will NOT get the same 'feeling/high' from the drugs as would one who's not in pain.
I'd like to see them kept illegal so we don't have more people with drug problems than we already do. These drugs have destroyed many, many lives.

And why the American Voters chose to RE-elect President Bush to four more years. YES!!!

I understand what you're saying, Linda, but that's just an assumption. I know a few people that are addicted to narcotics because that's all that's available for pain relif. But to say they don't get high from the drug(s) as well as it being a pain killer isn't true.
And regarding pain, many people take these pills to ease emotional pain which is why they get hooked. No different than a person taking them for physical pain, imo.
And the money saved from the 'drug war' would not only end corruption but it would allow the government all that money to spend on the people who need detox.
You have to ask yourself why the government would spend billions on the drug war if they weren't making billions from it?

NearTheSea - sounds like we have some unfortunate things in common - scummy ex-husbands (my first husband was a drunk) and painkillers. I take Ultram daily - unfortunately I don't get any high from them. Maybe I should switch to something better!
I don't believe everyone who uses illegal drugs is an addict or becomes an addict. Many, many of them do, but there are some who are recreational users only and eventually stop. I was a recreational user in my early 20s - was never addicted - stopped partying in my late 20s since I was working harder and had gone back to college.
Rusty and I may actually agree on something is the shocking part of this post. I do believe many addicted drug users have a chemical imbalance or are clinically depressed and self-medicating.

"I'd like to see them kept illegal so we don't have more people with drug problems than we already do."
In that case, we should ban alcohol and tobacco use as well. I would guess they are the leading drugs of death in this country.
"These drugs have destroyed many, many lives."
Funny how that works... Linda points out that they destroy many many lives, but doesn't mention that drugs have also been responsible for saving many many lives as well.
Caroline, there are many things we probably agree on, but in politics everything has to be black or white, or you are with me or against me. Common sense dictates otherwise.
