Bad enough when it was a privately run business a few years ago when this happened, inexcusable for a publicly traded company with large resources and tech staff.

hmmmm....I am guilty of not always reading the latest news about E-Bay...And I did not list for quite a long time. Last night, someone asked me if all the "down" problems might be caused by E-Bay being "Sold"?????Did I miss something?

And I love their excuse on the announcement board for why they can't extend auctions from the outage last night. It would mean more down time.

Yeah, I can see it now. We should be thankful they are not extending auctions, because instead of being down for 1 1/2 hours, it would have made it 2 hours if they were to extend auctions. So they really did us a favor.
Yeah, ok.

It's up in the KCMO area. It has been down for the last three nights off and on and even I, who is pretty tolerant, am getting tired of this. I live on a schedule and it messes me up. If they have a problem I wish they would just be honest. Problems exist, but I hate it when I am lied and/or told stories. ummm reminds me of a high level political figure running for office. oooh sorry, I digress.

Down in Canada too! I wrote to eBay last night and told them about all my auctions closing during their down time, and that I really don't feel that when I pay listing costs, they have the right to just allow auctions to close during the outage, and not extend them, or at least refund listing charges. I have only had one winning auction this week, because most people bid at the last minute, and some of them were re-lists, so I can't relist again without paying. I am really getting tired of all the problems, and nothing done to make right the sellers losses.

System problems now and then can be taken in stride, but this situation has crossed the line. I am convinced that one of these days eBay is going to be sued over that fact eBay is charging fees for services that it is not providing, and making no attempt to make up the lost time or refund fees for the lost time on an ongoing basis.

I have come to really appreciate the 10 day format. And say so in the terms. Someone HAS to see it for that lenght of time.
But I was blaming my computer even though it flew all over the net. Seems to be okay now. But let's not get overly-confident.

Gee, you almost *have* to list your auctions for 10 days - just to try to get 7 days out of it!

A few years back..eBay had a series of sporatic outages that eventually culminated in a huge 2 day outage. Shades of the past?

Go to eBay UK- they've been up the whole time, with what appears to be full functionality. YOu can pull up your auctions and all:

It is plain that there is only ONE ISSUE. EBAY cost accountants not allowing operations to have sufficient reserve capacity for peak useage. The techies are robbing from one set of servers to pay another; and when that one set bottles up (soon), they try another; round and round we go. This thing has been building for at least 3 weeks that I can observe, finally leading to the crash Sunday.

This is to EBAY OPERATIONS... pick up your courage and just tell Meg or whoever that you got to have 30-50% SPARE capacity if Ebay is to grow at 25%/year or more. 15%-30% if growth is 10-20%. Otherwise, COUNT on CRASHES or NEAR CRASHES like last SUNDAY.

You can get to you listings through eBay UK- although your potential bidders don't know that. If you've got something closing in the next few hours, and it's at risk of not reaching market value because of eBay's current outage, you can close the auction (after cancelling bids) through eBay UK.
I wouldn't do this for my routine stuff, but if I had a $500 item sitting at $100- I'd do it in a heartbeat.
