Is it just me or has Carnaby been down all afternoon? I think today is the day that the FVF's start. Seems like it would be better to change over the site late at night.

Carnaby is a great site and is what online auction site should look like.

Carnaby started to go down yesterday... the site would load, but you couldn't bring up any listings except through SEARCH.

Now it's down hard... even the Seller's Board (which is on a separate server) is not responding. This is the same sort of thing that happened with Gold's Auction and Dutchbid.com.

Wish I knew just what the heck was going on. Is Carnaby kaput, or are they just having problems implementing software changes for the final value fees?

Still down now. That's a long time for a site to be down. I guess it wasn't that stable?

It's kind of indredible that the Carnaby isn't posting any info about the problem at all. It's almost lke no one cares at all.

Reminds me a little of when the now-defunct AuctionCow went down for days a while back.

----------------

After reading 'Jess the Moderator's' recent post on Moo ( thanks Jess, that was a classy thing to do ) I'm beginning to form a theory on the disappearance of Carnaby.

There was a natural gas leak at Carnaby and everyone there is in Heaven. Whadda think? Plausible?
I can see a site going down for an extended period of time but I can not fathom the lack of communication from any remaining Carnaby brass.

Heck it reminds me more of when nobidding.com closed down in the middle of a click for points promo and never said another word about it.

What an unglorious end to a glorious auction site.

I could never figure out the multitude of company officers and personnel for a site with so few unpaid for listings and stores. I think there must have been a lot of politicing with the upper ranks that speeded up the demise of the site.

Now I would not be surprised to ever see the site come back up at all.

It's like an old Woody Allen movie.

The site appears to be up now. I wonder why they did not notify their members? Poor business ethics.....

Yes, the site is fully operational. Several of the Carnaby regulars are pressing the (new?) Carnaby management as to an explanation, and plans for the future.

What happened to Jess the Mod? They must have silenced her, at least for now anyway. I do not like the posts about the longtime Carnaby member winning a trip almost two months ago and now they appear to be welching on the deal ala nobidding.com's point contest before it became auxpal/BV.

As Ricky would say to Lucy: You got some splaining to do.

Jess has resigned as a Carnaby moerator, effective 1/13/2003. She posted this on the Carnaby boards.

I guess that tech that left for Pixie was a vital employee. Now the Carnaby image hosting is messed up. The management is now in the style of BV or worse, no announcements unless absolutely necessary. The last voice of Carnaby leaves today when the moderation is gone.

tooltimes,

Just to keep the record straight, the new CTO for Pixies left Carnaby several months ago.

timetravelers--

Hi Hi Hi BITT! No, not a peep about what's happening at Carnaby, nor anything about prizes. Have now issued a formal request regarding the latter.

I have this mental image of a turnip in a big vise... and nothing's coming out of the squeezings, not even turnip juice!

Ah, well. In the meantime I'm listing away on eBay, where the abuse is predictable.

Nobidding.com became AuxPal for a few days and then BidVille and there had been a big point contest where the points were worth prizes at nobodding.com. The drop-out doctor that owned and ran the beanie oriented nobidding.com site simply pretended that the contest had never happened and never mentioned it again. The ruckus died down after a while and he survived the situation and was even adored for a while at his new web creation, BidVille, and is still adored by four or five loyal followers there in fact.

Poor Carnaby. It's been down all day and has many site technical problems when it is up. Put that on top of a management team that has not uttered a single printed word in a long time.

An online auction site can survive the silent management part ( Bidville has gone 60 days before without a printed announcement of any kind for example ) but the serious technical quirks and complete closure of the site for extended periods of time should quickly doom the site.

This all reminds me of auctioncow.com's demise. The site was down for a long time with no announcements and then it just sort of disappeared, not only from view but from memory. We never did get to see that much touted secret marketing plan of theirs.

These sites are all doomed. ebay swallows them up whole, and spits them out. There for a while a new site was popping up daily. Most of them are now gone.

NOT ALL Blairwitch i have faith in Ioffer..as people can mirror their ebay items for free..this will give them at least a marketing plan for a change to wean themselves off the giant..
You know the old saying don't put all the eggs in one basket LOL

KENZY..YIKES i was so happy i saw you & Jan won the Carnaby weekend somewhere..

didn't they have another contest or donation thingy when they first started that they just Stopped there was an announcement on that At the time it seemed odd you cannot have a contest & then just cancel it in the real world..

I remember a small and dedicated group of followers of the site called www.bargainand haggle.com that were very optimistic and praiseworthy of their pet site. Didn't that site tank it in a while back?

Golds auctions also had dedicated users, but shut down if I remember correctly.

Seems like it was up for only one day in the last week or so. Yesterday you could get into the site but the login screen didn't work and there was not much to see in there. One post in the Cafe. Very sad possible end to a near-perfect auction site. I guess that near perfection was owned to the site staff that have departed the site beforehand.

No loss! The people that made Carnaby what it was have moved on to create a bigger and better community but without the limitations of the management holding them back.

As of right now, I still can't get onto Carnaby. I have not been able to for two days.
What a shame. I was going to list some auctions, but now I have reconsidered.
Not sure I want to associate with a site that ignores its members.

There's one thing i don't understand: I thought they were making all
these changes and hiring new people to get better, but all i've seen is
everything go down the tubes since last winter, which seems to coincide
with the resignation of their old management team and the hiring of the
new management:

and
http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/021010/flth009_1.html

I wonder if these new people have a clue what they're doing? So far, i'm
not impressed

There's a rumor flying around that one of the founders has left Carnaby.

Since no one at Carnaby is talking, who knows?

It's such a pity that a venue with so much potential ends this way. I could understand their closing but the lack of comment from management to it's loyal users is unacceptable.

I built a very good customer base with my storefront and poof, all gone. Now I'm beginning the new year with a new store!
