The 25th of December was picked in order to take attention away from a pagan holiday celebrated at that same time. It was a week long celebration that ended on 12/25. The same goes for Easter. It was a way for the Christians (a new religion at the time) to spread Christianity.
December 25 was a good day to pick, IMO. There's nothing like Christmas with new fallen snow on the ground! Driving around looking at the lights after a fresh snowfall is amazing! Then, you come home to a nice cup of hot chocolate and you're good to go!
