It's not sympathy but rather understanding that is under consideration in this case. By understanding the mental disease that causes such murders, we might be able to prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future.
By understanding the mental disease, you might also develop some sympathy for the mother who has lost her entire family.

So, how about a post wedding depression or post ragged-on-by-a-#*!@ depression as an excuse for spousal abuse?
I mean, after all, if you have factors in your life that cause a depression that drive you crazy to the point of a heinous crime, it seems to be a mitigating excuse to your personal responsibility and culpability.
